1920s-1930 Music Essay
Music in Annie in 1920 1930
The Roaring Twenties was a decade absorbed with the growth of the music industry thanks to the
radio being born in 1920 (Tyle). The excitement of the war being over brought the Roaring Twenties
forth. The American people hungered for change, and the new music of the era, jazz, satisfied their
great hunger (100 Favourite Songs). Jazz was a brand new type of music drastically different from
anything the American people had heard before. Unfortunately, the Great Depression, which
occurred in the thirties, brought forth an aroma of sadness and despair in the lives of the American
people. Would jazz also cave into the Depression? Or fight back? Although the mood of the
American people changed from the Roaring ... Show more content on [Link] ...
How advertisements were used on the radio was shown on the Hour of Smiles show with Bert
Healey in the play Annie; the Boylan sisters helped to advertise Oxydent toothpaste (Annie). The
radio produced many effects in the typical American lifestyle; it brought families together and even
knitted the nation together (Bailey 761). The music of famous artists and symphony orchestras was
beamed into countless homes through the radio (Bailey 762). The play Annie expresses that one of
these homes included an all girls orphanage; jazz music was beamed into the orphanage thanks to
their radio (Annie).
The iconic mark of the music in the twenties was jazz. According to a website devoted to posting
and commenting on jazz music in the twenties, jazz music appealed to the young people of the era.
The music...was fast and furious it was young people s music... (100 Favourite Songs). Jazz became
popular because it was so drastically different than anything they had heard before. Independent (or
indie) record companies were introduced in the Roaring Twenties (Tyle). Some of the greatest jazz
musicians appeared on indie labels: Gennett, Paramount, and Oken (Tyle).
Frankenstein Personal Response
1.) Initially, my first impression of this excerpt was unique. I felt as though I have read similar
situations in other novels, however, the author describes the environment unlike any other. First, I
wondered what the aliens were planning, and what effect it would have on humanity. Similarly, the
characters in the book behaved the same way, some trying to communicate with the aliens, and
others just wondering about them. It felt as though we were all moths flying around a bug zapper,
too mystified to realize the immediate danger posed by the aliens. Only when it was too late, did the
main character break out of his trance and escape.
2.) The genre of this selection is science fiction, however, the excerpt I read could be classified as a
short story. ... Show more content on [Link] ...
First, the author provides exposition, seen in the first three paragraphs. Second, rising action occurs
as the main character watches as a strange flame emerges in the alien craft. After this, the climax
transpires, and the surrounding pedestrians are engulfed in this strange flame. Unwinding, the falling
action ensues, as the main character watches in bewilderment as the alien ship destroys everything
besides him. Concluding, the denouement befalls, as the main character finally flees.
4.) During this excerpt, the protagonist s name is unknown, however, he is the character in which
the story is told. Opposing him, is this strange alien craft which is the antagonist.
5.) The most important traits of the main character are his bravery, curiosity, and humanity. He
displays each of these when he approaches the alien craft, wondering what it is, he asks others
around him. Without these three traits, the narrative would be very different, as he likely would have
fled much quickly.
6.) Only one setting in seen in this work. That setting is the heather filled area the main character
finds himself in. Other than the heather, the alien craft stands behind some sand dunes. No other
setting is shown in this work, as the main character doesn t describe any other. Although it is made
apparent there are towns nearby, they are not seen in the

Case Study Analysis

Executive Summary:
A case brief on AutoZone,Inc is being presented in this article. The paper briefly discusses the
history and progress strategy of the company so far. The main idea of the paper is the dilemma
faced by a portfolio manager Mark Johnson and the wise decision he could make in order to
safeguard his client s portfolio. The paper examines the current position of AutoZone in the market
and its growth potential which would help Johnson in making his decision.
At the closure of the paper, recommendations are being presented not only to the portfolio manager
but also to the AutoZone. Interestingly, how much of an impact can an interference of a corporate
raider have on the growth of a company ... Show more content on [Link] ...
In the short run share repurchases might look good in order to increase the share price in the market
and increasing the Earnings Per Share of the stock. Even though the act of share repurchases might
be an elusive move, no doubt that it is a sophisticated move as well. Most of the time management is
well aware of its decisions and makes judgments in the best interest of the shareholders. But,
AutoZone was pushing its luck by accumulating debt and somehow seemed like the management
wasn t concerned about the credit rating of the company.
Another alternative would be to use the cash to increase number of stores or expansion of its
business in Brazil. There is always a first mover advantage that AutoZone could capture in the Brazil
market. AutoZone had already captured the market in Mexico, Canada and Puerto [Link] again,
autoparts industry seems to have slowed down its number of store in the last year but the distance
travelled by light trucks has remained the same while the average age of these vehicles has increased
(Appendix Figure 4 amp; 5). This means that these vehicles require maintenance in the long run.
Also, AutoZone could be the first to capture new markets.
Conventionally, AutoZone could also utilize its cash flow in acquisition transaction. Although,
acquiring a budding or established counterpart might increase the cash flow of the firm, additional

King Kong Cultural Differences
The cultural differences represented in King Kong (1933) and King Kong (2005)

In the original, Bruce Cabot portrays Jack Driscoll who is the first mate of The Venture, the ship
that Carl Denham hires to sail to Skull Skull Island to film a feature film. Driscoll is the hero that,
upon falling in love with Fay Wray s Ann Darrow, He is the one most determined to save Ann
Darrow after she is sacrificed too Kong.
33 s Driscoll is honorable, courageous, and strong, all these virtues are all represented through
driscolls ruggedness. While he is a man of few words, the Jack Driscoll of the 1933 says what he
means no matter whom he might offend, whether he is referring to the ritualistic practices of Skull

seeing the original King Kong , the 1933 version of Kong , which is saw when I was nine. And I
remember that weekend I made plasticine dinosaurs and started to try to do some stop motion
animation with my little Super 8 camera. (Stratton, 2005)

when Kong is chained up in the Manhattan theater for public display, Denham creates a deformed
version of the 3 hour film where native performers wear the native costumes from the original film,
even duplicating the sacrificial ritual. This way, Jackson gets to almost satirically acknowledge the
racist and sexist attitudes that were prevalent in 1933 America, without giving these ideas legitimacy
them and offending modern viewers. But there s more to it than that. Jackson wanted his film to be
faithful in as many ways as he could, he found ways to get the more homage to his favorite film by
faithfully recreating moments and cues within a creative context. While recreating the sacrifice the
orchestral piece that Max Steiner made for the 33
Doris Humphrey s Two Ecstatic Themes
The American dancer and choreographer Doris Humphrey played one of the pivotal roles in the
development of the modern dancing. Humphrey with her deep contemplation of the possibilities of
human body movement and its unique expression invented the new vocabulary of dance movement,
built on the principles of the equilibrium and graceful gravity fall and recovery technique. The
legendary dancer based her choreography on the constant search of the body equilibrium nuances
and its principles. Using these features were created extraordinary performances, which not only
showed the choreographic novelty and creative potential, but also embraced the philosophy of the
contemporary dance, exploring the themes of the relations between individual and collective in the
contemporary society. The legacy of Doris Humphreylies in the introduction of the new
choreographic principles, extension of the modern danceas the important part of this art, and
aesthetic implementation of philosophy of modernism in the imperishable performances. Doris
Humphrey(1985 1958) is a vivid... Show more content on [Link] ...
The movements of the Humphrey s choreography are slow and precise, they pierce the space,
creating a graceful pattern, while due to their tempo they imprint in the memory of audience. Her
expression during the dance, while not speculating on dramatics, subtly and powerfully expresses
ideas of both themes. The spiral movements, while being soft are able to convey the idea of
expression. At the same time, the sharp angular movements of the second part deliver strife for
action and balance. After watching the performance, the viewer realizes the inseparability of the
action and expression in everyday life and appreciates the design of the dance (Doris Humphrey

Impact of the Recession on the US Auto Industry Essay
Introduction As the nation was introduced into the current recession, the auto industry and its labor
was likely hurt more than any other industry. Few years ago it was the homebuilding industry that
was troubled the most and held the first place, but it gave that position over to the auto industry the
following year. Why was this industry affected more than any other is very interesting and complex
situation. There are several factors why there was such a huge negative impact on this industry, its
performance, and the labor involved. Some of the major reasons are very high foreign competition,
higher oil prices, and certainly the recession. The Auto Industry In the United States, modern car
manufacturing has been historically... Show more content on [Link] ...
Ford s F Series experienced a 46% drop in sales for 2006 compared to 2007, making a once most
wanted truck in the United States almost abandoned by the consumers. The second and the current
recession that began in 2007 brought a new wave of impact on the auto industry. At the time banks
were more flexible with approving loans and the interest rates were low which attracted a lot of
consumers into the housing market. Since many of them were not able to afford it, eventually they
turned to foreclosure leaving them with debt and no credit worthiness; thus, banks started raising the
interest rates on auto loans. But foreign competition, higher oil prices, and higher interest rates were
not enough to destabilize the auto industry on such a scale; it was the recession that shocked it the
most. According to Martin B. Zimmerman, Chief Economist and Executive Director for
Governmental Relations and Corporate Economics Ford Motor Co., it is the auto industry that
depends on economic cycles more than any other industry. Drastic manufacturing cost cutting
continued for the next two years until there was almost nothing more to reduce or lay off. This
downturn of the economy began a long lasting unemployment rise in Michigan that eventually
reached 15.3%. In 2009, according to the Chicago Fed, there were more unemployed auto
The Poster Girl For Mexican And Feministic Art
Frida Kahlo was not predestined to be the poster girl for Mexican and feministic Art and part of one
of the most talked about marriages of the XXth century.
She was born into a lower class home in the suburbs of Mexico City. Her mother (whom she called
mi jefe my chief (Herrera, 1983, p14)) brought her up to be a good housewife and a believer
(Herrera, 1983).
Although she only started getting involved with it later, it was her father whom played a big part
into her discovery of the arts (Herrera, 1983). It could be believed the concept of male female
collaboration was always present in her life as her father, a photographer brought Frida along to
work whenever he needed help. Her first serious encounter with painting occurred after she
survived a car crash whose injuries left her in a full body cast for three month and on extended
bed rest (Herrera, 1983). Seeing their daughter fall into despair from this intense physical pain
and loneliness, Frida s mother had an easel made for her and her father lent her paints (Herrera,
1983). Because she could not get out of bed, she started painting what was available to her:
portraits of friends [...], family [...] and of herself (Herrera, 1983, p64). It was at this time Kahlo
started her self portrait series, a style which later would earn her the praises of Pablo Picasso and
/ became famous and praised for. Although she had never envisioned an artistic career for herself,
Frida was very ambitious with her work and became
