Key Terms:
Organizational Behaviour
Organization
Key Concepts:
The Importance of Interpersonal Skills
Importance of OB Principles
o Companies known as “good places to work” have been found to
generate superior financial performance
o Developing managers’ interpersonal skills helps retain and

o Strong relation between job satisfaction, stress and turnover, and
quality of workplace relationships

Defining Organizational Behaviour
Organizational Behaviour (OB): A field of study that investigates the
impact of individuals, groups, and structure on behaviour within
organizations, its purpose is to apply such knowledge toward improving
an organization’s effectiveness
Organization: A consciously coordinated social unit, composed of a
group of people, that functions on a relatively continuous basis to
achieve a common goal or set of goals
Organizational Behaviour:
o Is for everyone
o Has few absolutes
This is because human behaviour is complex and changes
on situation and by person
o Takes a contingency approach: Approach taken by OB that
considers behaviour within the context in which it occurs
We must consider behaviour within the context it occurs
Complementing Intuition with Systematic Study
Systematic Study: Looking at relationships, attempting to attribute
causes and effects, drawing conclusion based on scientific evidence
Evidence-based Management (EBM): The basing of managerial
decisions on the best available scientific evidence
Intuition: An instinctive feeling not necessarily supported by research
Big Data
o Extensive use of statistical analysis and compilation
o Can be used to make effective management decisions and
manage resources
o More fields are using OB and data as well
Disciplines that contribute to the OB Field
Main sciences that influence OB (a behavioural science) are:
o Psychology
o Social Psychology
o Sociology
o Anthropology
Challenges and Opportunities in the Canadian Workplace
Critical issues confronting managers
o Economic Pressures
o Continuing Globalization
o Understanding workforce diversity:
Different sexes, ethnicities, age groups, all coming
together is a challenge
o Customer Service
Most EEs work in service jobs
o People Skills
o Networked Organizations
Allow people to communicate and work together even if
they are thousands of kms apart
o Social Media
Many EEs use social media, at work and out of it, and
studies show it can have a negative affect on them
increasing stress
o Enhancing Employee Well-Being at Work
As we have transitioned more into remote work and
working anywhere a laptop and mobile can go; it is
important to consider well being
Many EEs feel that they are never truly “away” from
work
Some companies expect EEs to be reachable even on
off-hours
This increases levels of stress
Good to know:
Lack of interpersonal skills is the top reason why some EEs fail to
advance
Impact of reorganization on companies:
o Micromanagement of EEs
o Issues concerning brand perception
o Guilt by EEs who survive layoffs
o Altered self-perception of EEs in response to increased stress
