Chapter 2 Connection Design Example

The document discusses the relationship between weld length and shear lag issues in structural applications. It notes that longer welds can develop a full net section, while shorter welds lead to shear lag and ultimately block shear governing the design. The calculation for x bar for a tube is also provided, resulting in 51.5mm.

x bar for tube is at D/pi =

161.6mm/pi = 51.5mm
close to value above
if you have alot of
(longer) weld you will
develop full net
section however as
the weld gets shorter
you get shear lag
issues, then
eventually block
shear governs.
