THE GERUND

LEARNING MAP BY ITALIAN MATTERS

KEEP IN MIND

 -ARE verbs mangiare → mangi-ando to eat → eating


 -ERE verbs leggere → legg-endo to read → reading
 -IRE verbs sentire → sent-endo to hear → hearing

1. It’s mostly used to create continuous tenses that emphasize an ongoing action in the past, present, or
future. It never changes its form based on gender or number.
Sto leggendo un libro. I am reading a book.
Sto preparando da mangiare. I am preparing something to eat.

2. It’s also used to emphasize when something happened.


Entrando ho visto un casino. As I came in I saw a mess.
Vedendo Mario mi sono sentita male. When I saw Mario I felt sick.
