Ekang Mash Pind Swedan

Definition:
Ekang Mash Pind Swedan
There are a number of fomentation methods mentioned in Ayurveda.
Mash Pind Sweda is one among such methods. Mash = (Black
gram)Adad, Pind = bolus and Sweda = fomentation.
Boiled Black gram in Balamul Kwath and mixed with medicated milk
a piece of cloth. Of course, there is a specific method and procedure
to prepare it. This bolus is used for fomentation in specific manner for
affected part or whole body. Mash Pind Sweda improves
the blood circulation to the affected part, dilates the blood vessels,
pacify the Vata and thus relive the pain and stiffness of the muscles
and nourish the nerves. It give nourishment to Majja Dhatu . This
method is really helpful in Back pain, Arthritis, Cervical pain,
Sciatica, Muscular pain, Sprains etc.

respiratory disorders like cough, dyspnoea,
infections etc.

Preparation of Mash Pind
Collect the material according to the requirement and Pottali is
prepared following the steps:
1. Take a cotton cloth of 4-5 cm X 45cm size
2. Place the cloth on a plain surface like table
3. Place 250 to 300gms of material in the center of the cloth
4. Hold the four corners of the cloth making the material to be in
the center
5. Fold the tips of three corners of cloth in to holding hand
6. The fourth corner is wrapped around the wick like holding in the
hand
7. Taking the tags tightly wrapped to make a Pottali holder
8. Now the Pottli is ready with the material inside
9. Rest of the Pottali according to the need 2 or 4 are prepared and
kept ready

 Therapy room Preparation
 Before the patient arrives, set the table with sheet. Lay the rolled
bath mat at the head of the table.
 Check well medicine and water must be warm.
 Arrange one tray with medicine, warm water, hand towel and tissue
paper.
 Refresh the room and start the calm music before patient arrived
 200ml of medicated oil should be heat by placing it in warm water.
The oil should be heat up to 38 C-44 C or as per the prakriti of
o o

patient.
 Kharapaka oil or madhyamapaka oil should be select according to
climate, prakriti, disease condition of the patient.
 For shiroabhyanga and Abhyanga on face, lukewarm oil should be
select.
Pradhan Karma(Operative Procedure)
 Guide the patient towards therapy room.
 Advising the patient to switch off the mobile phone
 Introduce the patient in detail about the procedure and her / himself
of therapist
 Ensuring safety of patient belonging by placing them in locker and
handing over keys to the patient.
 Patient should be ask to pass faeces/urine if having urge for the
same
 Providing in- procedure disposable costume to the patient.
 Pad Prakshalan (Washing and cleaning of foot by warm water)
 Wipe the right feet and then left one
 Chanting auspicious mantra prior commencement of procedure

 ‘ॐ ब्रह्मदक्षाश्विरुद्रेन्द्रभूचन्द्रार्कानिलानलाः|
ऋषयः सौषधिग्रामा भूतसङ्घाश्च पान्तु ते|
रसायनमिवर्षीणां देवानाममृतं यथा|
सुधेवोत्तमनागानां भैषज्यमिदमस्तु ते’|

Procedure:
Eyes are covered by dying a cloth with rose water around the eyes;
the head is covered using a wet cotton pad as Ayurveda strongly
believes the eyes and head should be protected from over heat.

Apply Pottali on whole or local body as per advised by physician.


Main Procedure steps:
1. Ensure that Pottali are ready
2. Heat the Pottli
Pottali are heated in Balamoola keath,Bala ksheera or 3. Ensure the
part is well oiled with either sarvanga or local Abhyanga
4. The Warm Pottali at a temperature of 42 to 45 degrees Centigrade
are used for sweda
5. On the Whole body or local part as scheduled the Pottali are placed
with one hand to give Swedana and the other hand is used for
spreading the heat and juices of the Pottali
6. The Pottali are reheated as required to maintain the temperature
7. The entire process is repeated for several times till the time

Symptoms of proper fomentation


• Sweat production
• Relief from pain, coldness. These symptoms appear on spot.
• Decrease in stiffness, heaviness, appearance of softness.
• Feeling of lightness & warm
 Symptoms of very intense fomentation --- Due to simple
cause like severe dehydration, up to pathology like sun stroke i.e
Trauma to thermal regulating centre .So this can emergency like
ICU management for Shock
• Burning, Bleeding
• Palpitations , Fainting, Vertigo or giddiness
• Excessive sweating & Excessive Thirst
• Fever or Hyperpyrexia, Hyperthermia ,skin can becomes
red& hot –similar to Sun stroke
• Vomiting
• Burn injuries on skin
Paschat Karma(Post-Operative Procedure)
1. After completion of the procedure the patient is asked to take rest
until the time he returns to normal room temperature
2. As he is comfortable at room temperature the deposits of
shastikashali or Navadhanya are scraped out and cleaned
3. Taking a towel dipped in hot water the entire body is cleaned
4. Belongings of the patient should be return back to him
Blood pressure and pulse measurements should be monitor after
completion of procedure
5. Concerned consultant should explain Pathya-apathya guideline
6. Specific yoga guidelines should be provide as per the need of
patient
7. The receptionist should fill feedback form as per patient’s feedback
8. When the patient feels appetite, should take light food according to
digestive power and satmya
Instruct him to protect his head and eyes from wind, A.C.,
Sunlight and do not wash face and drink cold water, physical and
mental exertion during course of treatment.

Avoid Swedan: Eyes are covered by dying a cloth with rose water
around the eyes; the head is covered using a wet cotton pad as
Ayurveda strongly believes the eyes and head should be protected
from over heat.

PRECAUTIONS :

1. Care should be taken while preparing rice to avoid over/ under


cooking.
2. Tie bolus firmly to avoid leaking of contents while applying
it on the body of the patient.
3. The therapists should be placed in both the sides of the patient
so as to maintain the uniformity of the procedures in each part of the
body.
4. Temperature of the bolus should be checked by the therapist
before applying it on the patient.
5. The pressure, direction of the movements, rubbing etc should
be controlled by the therapist during the whole procedure.
6. The bolus should be gasped at the base of its stalk between the
base of the thumb and index finger of right hand so as to hold the
belly of the bolus or to squeeze it as and
when necessary.
7. Procedure should be stopped at any time if the patient gets
good perspiration or shivering.
8. Restrictions about diet, physical and mental exertions should
be taken during the course as well as for an equal number
of days thereafter.

COMPLICATIONS AND ITS


MANAGEMENT
Shivering, fainting and rashes are the common complications seen in
the patients during or after the procedure. Shivering occurs due to
the uneven distribution of temperature or prolonged gap in
between the replacement of boluses. It also occurs when the body
is exposed to cold immediately after the Procedure. In this
condition, patient is advised to take rest, covered with a blanket and
given a warm liquid to drink. Fainting occurs due to increased body
temperature or low heat threshold of patient or excessive use of
theprocedure. In this condition cold water is sprinkled over the
face and body along with Drakshadi Kashaya is given to drink.
Due to overheating or sensitive skin or Pitta Prakriti rashes may
occur in patients. Paste of honey and Ghrita should be applied over
the affected parts.
