Corruption In Behind The Beautiful Forevers
Behind the Beautiful Forevers uses conflicts to help establish the theme that corruption is one
strategy to overcome poverty. One conflict is between Sunil and the orphanage where he was angry
to discover that his orphanage is corrupted. Sunil finds out about how the orphanage work for the
sole reason of getting money from foreigners, and that money is not implemented on the orphanage
kids. Instead that money is for the nuns personal use. This shows that even an orphanage and a
Handmaid, the least expected, uses the opportunity to be corrupted and survive from their own
poverty. When the author was describing Sunil, she says, He(Sunil) knew why he and the other
children received ice cream only when newspaper photographers came to visit, and
Phillips V. Alvarado Case Summary
On November 21, 1968, plaintiff Nga Li was driving northbound on Alvarado St. in Los Angeles.
She was in the inside lane, and before reaching the Third Street intersection she stopped to make a
left turn across three lanes of Alvarado, intending to enter a driveway. At this time defendant Robert
Phillips, an employee of defendant Yellow Cab Company, was driving a company owned taxicab
southbound on Alvarado. He passed through the intersection, and collided with the plaintiff s car,
resulting in personal injuries to the plaintiff, and damage to the car.

The trial court, sitting without a jury, found that defendant Phillips was traveling at a speed that was
unsafe under the conditions, and that the traffic light for his lane was yellow at the time. It also
found, however, that plaintiff s left turn across the southbound lanes of Alvarado constituted an
immediate hazard. The trial court held that the driving of the ... Show more content on

ISSUE: Should contributory negligence be a complete bar to recovery?

RULING: No. Judgment was reversed.

RATIONALE: The court held that the all or nothing rule of contributory negligence ought to be
superseded by a rule which assesses liability in proportion to fault, since the doctrine is inequitable
for failing to distribute responsibility in a proportional manner.

The court noted that to date 25 states had eliminated the all or nothing rule of contributory
negligence and had instead enacted general apportionment statutes calculated to assess liability in
proportion to fault. In 1973 these states were joined by Florida, which reached the same result by
judicial decision. [Hoffman v. Jones (Fla. 1973) 280 So.2d 431.] The court was convinced that logic
and justice argued against the retention of the contributory negligence doctrine, and that it should be
replaced by a system under which liability for negligence is assessed in direct proportion to

Eureka Stockade Informative Speech
Today I am here to present a pitch about the Eureka Stockade. With help from you financially, this
documentary will be very successful and I feel that it is an important topic to cover as it was a
significant stepping stone in Australians history.
The Eureka Stockade was a rebellion by gold miners at Ballarat, Victoria, Australia (December 3rd
1854). This rebellion was very important for Australia becoming a nation as it resulted in one of the
greatest victories for equality, fairness and it was the birth place of the Australian political system.
This presentation will explore the impact the Eureka stockade had on the future of Australia. These
impacts will be examined through information on gold licenses, key individuals and the origins of
Australian democracy.
One of the key individuals involved, the leader of the miners during the stockade, was Peter
Lalor. Peter Lalor had a leading role in the Eureka stockade. He was the only crook to make it to
parliament. Lalor stepped in to help the miners protest against gold licences and the fees. Peter
Lalor got a seat in parliament, claimed the right to vote and got miners licenses cheaper. A great
quote from Peter Lalor is And with a burning feeling of an injured man I mounted the ... Show more

Diggers had to pay fees for their licenses each month, with police coming around to gold sites
often to check if everyone had one. As the government started making the fee prices higher and
higher, that s what sparked protests against the people in charge. There is a gold mining license in
display at the National Museum of Australia. The license that is on display would have all of the
information on it regarding dates during the Eureka stockade, what the licence was about and it
would include the regulations of having a licence, which would back up the claims of police raids

Pros And Cons Of Animals Behind Bars

Animals Behind Bars
If you live in America you are probably one of the 175 million people who visit zoos each year.
You have probably visited the zoo with your families to look at the extraordinary animals that
they keep. You are not the only one to do so, but you have been tricked by zoos to believe that the
animals in their care are properly cared for. The truth is for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week animals
in captivity are forced to spend their time confined in a cell. The precious animals that you fall in
love with are deprived of everything that makes their life meaningful. Keeping wild animals in zoos
should be prohibited because the animals are not properly taken care of, they are not in their natural
environments, and they are proven to have shorter life spans in captivity.
The wild animals brought into zoos are seen as profits; which means the animals are not properly
taken care of, because the only focus of the owners is to make money. In 2003 The Wall Street
Journal reported, nearly half of the country s zoos face cutbacks this year; attendance was down
3% nationwide, and the funds allocated to improve the care of the animals was used for cosmetic
improvements. (PETA 2) Zoos are improving every aspect of the zoo that will bring in customers
like: gift shops, restaurants, amusement rides, and scenery. They are forgetting about the most
important aspect: the welfare of the animals. People visiting zoos often
Aretha Franklin s Amazing Grace
Amazing Grace, one of the most well known songs in the world, has been, and will continue to be,
performed in a vast variety of ways. Whether it is up tempo, balladic, or somewhere in between, this
song is much like the American National Anthem, in that every artist who approaches the piece
wants to incorporate their own signature style. Aretha Franklin and Judy Collins are two women
who are not deviant from that standard. Both of these women have produced classic renditions of the
same piece, but with wildly contrasting attributes.
Aretha Franklin, well known as a singer and figurehead for African American gospel, recorded
Amazing Grace with her own stylings and flair. However, this piece was not devoid of many key
characteristics of West African musical tradition. Ortiz Walton authored a piece of writing entitled,

The first of these is collective participation. Franklin s version of Amazing Grace is saturated with
this form of musical tradition. From the opening of the piece, there is a large sum of audience
participation with verbal exclamations, clapping, snapping, and humming. Several choir members
are heard shouting and clapping throughout the entirety of the song. In addition, there is a clear
rooting with improvisation and antiphony in between verses and choruses. This piece genuinely
seemed to be coming from the soul rather than a book. Franklin s performance is full of piano and
vocal jazz and blues scales that exist primarily in the minor key. Walton discusses African scales and

Essay on Recitatif by Toni Morrison
Recitatif by Toni Morrison

Recitatif , by Toni Morrison, is a profound narrative that I believe is meant to invite readers to
search for a buried connotation of the experiences that the main characters, Twyla and Roberta, face
as children and as they are reunited as adults. Some of the story?s values and meanings involving
race, friendship and abandonment begin to emerge as the plot thickens; however, more messages
become hidden and remain unrecognized, even until the very last sentence.

From the very first paragraph of the narrative, I noticed that there were several details that the
narrator mentioned that required further, deeper thought. For me, this is what made the story
appealing.

At the beginning of the ... Show more content on [Link] ...

I discovered towards the end of the story that she considered Maggie her ?dancing mother?(480), and
she wanted to kick her because she knew she couldn?t scream, and that would be her way of getting
even and making her mother feel the way she did helpless and alone.

I believe that Twyla had the impression that her mother was racist, and that this was the basis for
Twyla being against racism. At first, Twyla was a little uneasy about being stuck in a room with
someone of another race and she had stated that her mother wouldn?t like her being placed with
Roberta and that ?they never washed their hair and they smelled funny?(467). But I think that she
soon realized that her mother was ?nobody who could tell you anything important that you could
use?(480). She grew a strong relationship with Roberta, and race meant nothing to her ?it didn?t
matter that (they) looked liked salt and pepper?(468).

The significance of the role Twyla?s mother plays is just one twist to the way in which the story
can be read. This makes the meaning of the story different to every reader. My interpretation of the
details left by the author can be completely different to interpretations of someone else, and there are
probably deeper meanings to the story that I didn?t even come across. This characteristic is what
made this narrative unique and interesting for me to read. Works Cited

How Is Loss Used In Mid Term Break
How is Loss Experienced in the poems Mid Term Break and November? In both the poems
November, by Simon Armitage and Mid Term Break, by Seamus Heaney, the persona is compelled
into that position. They both describe loss as a traumatic experience, which the persona tries to
detach themselves from in order to accept the reality. In November, the persona is burdened with
guilt and self blame. Realising that the situation is inevitable illuminates his fears of ageing and
death. Mid Term Break is an autobiographical poem where the persona (Seamus Heany) maintains a
very formal and distant tone in order to push aside his overwhelming grief. In both poems, the
persona tries to distance themselves from the situation to try and make the experience... Show more

Heaney places the powerful monostich at the end, which intensifies the sombre mood into a
powerful shock to the audience. Comparing a four foot box with a foot for every year doesn t only
tell the audience how brief his brother s life was, but also highlights Heaney s realisation of this
harsh, inescapable horror. By rhyming the phrase bumper knocked him clear with his age on the
monostich links the fragility of the child to the powerful effect on the audience and family. This
reminds the persona and the audience that the impact isn t only on the child, but also on the
Comparing The Difficulties And Challenges Of Migration To...
My Journey of Canada

Everyone in Canada has a different story of how they came here. In this report, I will be explaining
how my family immigrated to Canada, as well as the difficulties and challenges of adapting to
Canadian life. I will also talk about the difference between the two enriched cultural identities from
Sri Lanka to Canada and Switzerland to Canada. As the last point, I will explain my family feelings
at the moment of becoming Canadians. My family s experience as immigrants helped shape who I
am.
In this paragraph, I will be explaining the lives of Swiss people. Some of my cousins are
immigrants from Switzerland and their names are Delena and Mary. They both came to Canada to
get an education and to have more freedom. Not only for that but also because their relatives were
settled in Canada. Some difficulties and challenges these two went through were leaving friends,
society, food and their environment. Also, they experienced language barriers and were new to
multicultural life. Now I would like to talk about the identity differences such as Christmas. My
cousins celebrated Christmas differently in ... Show more content on [Link] ...
Some of the difficulties and challenges my grandma went through were flying for a long period
of time. A major challenge was to leave her relatives, best friends, the society and nature. My dad
just had a few things but since he was the first to settle in Canada he missed his loved ones that
were with him in the past. A difficult situation for my mother was to answer the questions from the
immigrant stands. Also, she was glanced down by the time, the change of money, a different
environment, and seeing different people. As an example, I would say that it was her very first
time meeting my dad s siblings and parents. Just like the Vikings, my family had to adapt to the
climate and land. It was really hard but they have come a long
Essay on Bluest eye
Toni Morrison s novel, The Bluest Eye, presents the lives of several impoverished black families in
the 1940 s in a rather unconventional and painful manner. Ms. Morrison leads the reader through the
lives of select children and adults, describing a few powerful incidents, thoughts and experiences that
lend insight into the motivation and. behavior of these characters. In a somewhat unconventional
manner, the young lives of Pauline Williams Breedlove and Charles (Cholly) Breedlove are
presented to the reader. Through these descriptions, the reader comes to understand how they
become the kind of adults they are. Background informationis given not necessarily to incur
sympathy but to lend understanding.

The narrator makes the point that ... Show more content on [Link] ...
Thus, Pauline s actions as an adult are more easily understood through this knowledge of her
childhood.

One of the most striking images is the description of Cholly Breedlove s is his memory of a
picnic where a family is enjoying a watermelon which the father smashes against a rock. Cholly is
impressed with the image of the father holding the melon high above his head like the devil
holding the earth up, ready to smash it. quot;He never felt anything thinking about God, hut just the
idea of the devil excited him. And now, the strong black devil was blotting out the sun and getting
ready to smash open the world. quot; This passage is a foreshadowing of Cholly s adult life. He is
attracted to the idea of power, strength and excitement and as a strong black adult, Cholly feels his
freedom and uses it against himself and his family.

Another powerful incident, Cholly s first sexual experience, gives insight into the rage, confusion
and tenderness he feels towards women in his adult life. The narrator describes the incident with
Darlene and the white men through Cholly s eyes. The reader understands the initial excitement of
young sexual energy, and the later humiliation of being caught by the cruel white men. Cholly
directs his anger towards Darlene rather than towards the white men

If Internet Is Considered As With Its Core Definition
If internet is considered as with its core definition, then it s just a technology that can transfer data
from one computer to another. That s it. But this vague definition is also the reason for its
marvelous, uncontrollable diffusion, and evolution.
Absolutely no boundaries were ever set with the internet. And since the memory in our computer
kept on increasing exponentially, these small pieces of data, first transferred, 20 years ago, turned
into pictures, sound, books, shows, movies.
This enormous and we could say endless possibility of transfer offered by the internet with no
boundaries at all, well it redefined the concept of a material object, the concept of diffusion.
This lack of restriction has set free the will of any user to ... Show more content on [Link] ...
To start off, We can see the internet as this incredible communication tool that has revolutionized the
speed and the effectiveness of all world trade during the past 20 years.
In fact, the internet has literally removed a variable part of business communication.
The time taken to send or receive information isn t a preoccupation anymore.
For example, the drawings and the characteristics of a tool can be discussed between the engineering
unit in the US, and the production factory in China. And that includes exchanges of pictures,
designs, figures of production cost, business plan... etc!

Very soon in the explosion of internet, various companies helped provide the demassification of
internet. But this demassiffication would be like no other before. A regular demassification process
affects genre, selects viewers, and slices its general content to a more specified one, to match the
taste of their customers. The internet was totally different, by giving the publishing tools directly in
the hands of users, and an easy but revolutionary statement could be made: One user on the internet
= one content
The internet doesn t battle over frequencies, over rights of emission; all the diffusing technology
needed is already built in.
Coming back to the demassification of internet, the providers of user content cut off the last
technological boundary remaining between the user, and the publication.

Farewell to Arms Essay
Farewell to Arms

Death is often represented by traditional symbols ranging from the color black to the common
tombstone. Besides these icons, other signs can stand for mortality including rain. In A Farewell to
Arms, Ernest Hemingway associates rain with death many times. Although rain is not usually
considered a symbol of death, the main character Fredric Henry discovers this natural occurrence is a
personal theme he relates with death.

The first time Hemingway uses the connection between rain and death is during a march to the river.
The group was climbing out of the embankment to cross the road, and suddenly three shots rang out,
one bullet unfortunately hitting Amyo. Fredric thought to himself, He looked very dead. It was ...

Maybe this was because of the arrival of his new baby. During the birth there are many
complications and a cesarean section is needed to deliver the baby. I could see nothing but the
dark and the rain falling across the light from the window. So that was it. The baby was dead .
Now his son had been taken by the rain and nothing could be done. Now Fredric s fear of the rain
is revealed through anger displayed towards his new son for the pain his wife suffered. Still the rain
does not cease.

The final act of the rain was the most devastating. Fredric had loved his wife above all things
throughout the war. When their son had died during labor it left her weak. It was like saying
good bye to a statue. After a while I went out and left the hospital and walked back to the hotel in
the rain . Just as he had walked out of Amyo s and his son s life, he walked out of his wife s. All
of these events occurred in the rain. Even when he walked out of the Italian Army it was all done
while it was raining. Finally, after all of these terrible happenings, Fredric s fear of the rain causes
him to speak to God. This is the first time he has spoken to God, throughout the entire book. This
shows how his fear of the rain has brought him to the realization that rain means death. The rain
was always a constant theme in Fredric s loss of family and friends in the book. The rain was used
to set the mood of a situation and always foreshadowed a death. People often
