Essay On Terri Shiavo
They were the subjects of public disputes with family members, court systems, medical
professionals, the media, and society at large. Terri Schiavo, Nancy Cruzan and Karen Ann
Quinlan; their names are synonymous with permanent vegetative state (PVS). The amazing
technological advancements in modern medicine has been credited with keeping persons alive
who in times past would have died, therefore this is remarkable for countless families. In the cases
of the Quinlan s, the Cruzan s and many like them, families members find it unbearable to witness
loved ones who linger indefinitely in PVS with little or no chance for recovery. There are many
like Terri Schiavo s parents, who value the lives of their love ones no matter how limited their...

374, para. 3). According to John Collins Harvey, a senior research scholar and professor emeritus
of medicine at Georgetown University, feeding tubes should be removed from patients in PVS
because there is no hope for recovery. Harvey explains that the cerebral cortex the area of the
brain that controls conscious thought, language, and sensory perception has been irreparably
damaged by a lack of oxygen (Harvey, 2004). However, recent studies on DOC have revealed the
difficulty of diagnosing PVS, especially because a few PVS patients recovered consciousness and
demonstrated awareness as a result of drug therapies and functional imaging studies (Fisher
Appelbaum, 2010). Obviously, these patients were not in PVS, an irreversible condition. The
awakening of persons after the administration of specific medications brings attention to the
possibility that VS is often over diagnosed (Sara Pistoia, 2010). The differential diagnosis of
disorders of consciousness is challenging. The rate of misdiagnosis is approximately 40%, and new
methods are required to complement bedside testing, particularly if the patient s capacity to show
behavioral signs of awareness is diminished (Monti, Vanhaudenhuyse, Coleman, Boly, 2010, para. 1).
The Issue of Death The definition of death is another issue paramount to this discussion. Robert

What Happens When He Found The Camp Analysis
At the end of the story, I think what happens is that the story will repeat itself, because at the end
Alfred says the exact same thing at the beginning, does it in the same setting and also the boys
who came out of the chute do the same thing as the guys in the beginning. Also, it says Carl is the
tallest, and he pairs with Alfred, the boy who found the camp, who is almost as tall. He is
muscular too, in a way none of the other boys are muscular. Because they are tall and strong, they
easily seemed like the leaders. (Cook 239) meaning that they could have been in the place outside
the chute for a long time and have become cannibals. I noticed that in two different places in the
story, it says that Alfred smiles at the main characterthrough the flicker orange light, on pages 255
and 240, once in the middle of the short story after the main character says We are charmed boys.
(Cook 240) and once at the very end when the main character starts to realize what s going on....

When Alfred first suggests eating Davey, the other boys are first reluctant and then guiltily agree
because they couldn t think clearly with their stomachs so empty. This leads to easier consensus
within the boys to continue the cannibalism and goes as far as to have Alfred eaten almost all 13
other boys. I think Alfred symbolizes the voice in your head encouraging you to not do the right
thing and instead do the wrong thing or the less morally right because he always encourages the
other boys to do cannibalism and I think even goes so far as to kill Davey by twisting his neck in
the other direction and pretend that he died by himself. (Cook 243) When that happens, only George
is very reluctant about the cannibalism; all the others are guiltily agreeing with
Female Sexual Offenders And Female Sex Offenders
Just like most crimes, the number of female sexual offenders is much lower than the number of
male sexual offenders. This is especially true about sex offenses. For a while, most people didn t
believe that woman could even commit a sex related crime; besides prostitution. There is still a
stigma around the topic; woman are the victims, not the offenders. This is not true though. Female
sex offenders have their own category. This is because their motives and actions are different than a
man s. The research done on female offenders can be bias because it is such a small amount
compared to the malepopulation of sex offenders.
Woman are thought to make up less than 5% of all sexual offences (Harris, 1979). This is very
small compared to the ... Show more content on [Link] ...
That is almost half of the offenders with a drug problem and one third of them with an alcohol
problem.
The victims of a female s sex offender are generally younger than a man s victim. An investigation
was held in Arkansas in 1999 and reported that 50% of their victims were categorized as 11 16 and
24% were in the 4 10 age range (Tewksbury, 2004, p 368). Solis and Benedek mention a study that
found 60% of males who reported sexual abuse had identified a female as the offender (1993). The
female offenders who abuse young boys are suggested that they have a difficult time associating
with adult males and they use the boys as a substitution (Solis and Benedek, 2012). This could be
because of their own trauma as a child, they do not have healthy relationships with any adult male in
their life. So, they go after children. It is also pointed out that females are more likely to victimize
other females. One thought on why females victimize other females is because they have a male
counterpart, who is attracted to females. According to Tewksbury (2004), the female offender knew
the victim:
In Fromuth and Conn (1997) s study of self reported sexual perpetrators in a college population,
68% of the victims were identified as family members. Faller (1995) reported that in the sample of
40 clinically referred perpetrators, 85% were mothers and 55% abused only their own children,
whereas 30% abused both their own and other s children.

Speech On Hate Speech
In a recent survey conducted by UCLA professor John Villasenor, 660 out of the 1,500 college
students surveyed about hate speech insisted that hate speech was not protected under the
Constitution. Additionally, 240 students, from the same study, were unsure if hate speech was
protected or not. (Timpf) This study reveals how misinformed people are on hate speechand how
censorship is becoming more acceptable in American ideologies. Americans are seeing words that
they disagree with as acts of verbal violence rather than learning to accept differing opinions and
beliefs. Instead of being proactive and using the Constitution as a source to fight back people would
rather choose to change it even if it means taking away core values of the First Amendment.
Although the Constitution covers speech that is deemed hateful, legislation should not change the
law to restrict people from saying hateful words; instead, individuals affected by these obscene words
should utilize the First Amendment to counteract the words with a positive message instead of
trying to silence those with opposing beliefs and viewpoints.
What is Considered Hate Speech
Before discussing hate speech, it is vital to know its definition. According to Meriam Webster, the
online dictionary, hate speech is defined as speech expressing hatred of a particular group of people
. Hate speech as defined by Meriam Webster is covered under the First Amendment. This means that
anyone can legally judge others based on religion,
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind By Michel Gondry Essay
A hollow feeling inside of your chest consumes your body. The room is filled with your sobs and
hiccuped breaths. A million thoughts are racing through your head; none of these are positive. You
tell yourself that you wish you never met them. You plea at the universe to take away all the
memories of them. You beg to never again feel this type of agony. If possible, would you eradicate
the memory of another human?
In the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) and Clementine
Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) do exactly this. Directed by Michel Gondry, this American romantic
comedy wonderfully expresses the idea that a person s memories are fundamental in human growth.
Through cinematography, lighting, and character development, Gondry successfully directs one of
the best twenty first century films.
The cinematography of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind effectively develops the film s plot
and characters. In the beginning of the movie, Joel is shown awaking in a close up. This shot
easily shows the gloomy expression on his face, asking the audience to question why he is upset.
Hand held cameras provide the story with a natural, more realistic feel, inviting the audience into
Joel s memories. The hand held cameras provide the film with an imperfect, human perspective. This
can be viewed primarily in the honeymoon on ice scene. Slight shakes of the camera are evident. In
the scene when Joel and Clementine see each other on the train to Montauk, far
The Serial Podcast, By Sarah Koenig
Adnan Syed is accused of murdering his ex girlfriend, and various factors present him as a very
likely suspect. Information put together by the state don t add up, but instead prove he is innocent.
Is Adnan guilty or innocent for his ex girlfriend s death? In the Serial Podcast, journalist Sarah
Koenig discusses the case, committed almost seventeen years ago, and uncovers new evidence that
indicates Adnan s innocence. Adnan Syed has been viewed as a boyfriend, honor roll student, and a
murderer. Many described him as a smart, flirtatious, and a likable high schooler. On January 13,
1999, his ex girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, was murdered. Investigators immediately assumed Adnan as the

He wasn t. I was like he s a p...I m trying to conv explain I m seventeen, like He s a player! He has
a lot of girls! (Episode 2: The Breakup p. 37). Undoubtedly, Koenig asserts an exceptional point,
Adnan is popular among the females in his school and he most likely isn t completely devastated
by their breakup. Although he was a bit emotional, he moved on. Others also advocated a similar
statement, But nearly everyone I ve spoke with, Adnan s friends and teachers say he took the
breakup like anyone would. Adnan s friend Mac Francis said Adnan initially was devastated and
jealous about the new boyfriend. Said he grumbled about it in a typical guy way, nothing strange.
Everyone I talked to said some version of this, that he wasn t rage filled or vindictive. He was just
sad (Episode 2: The Breakup p. 36). Sarah Koenig asked many people and none of them
announced anything extreme between Adnan and Hae after their breakup. After analyzing these
pieces of evidence, one can infer the claim of being upset over Hae isn t verified through anyone.
Another component to Adnan s innocence would be Asia McClain and the library. Thereafter, a
witness, Asia McClain, had physically spoken to Adnan when he allegedly murdered Hae. Asia
McClain was a high schooler that attended Adnan s school and composed a couple letters to him
after he was arrested. One of these letters reads, Dear Adnan I hope I

competitor being Star Trek, Star Wars has becoming ever more popular ever since its first red

merchandise sold, and much more. Recently Disney spent $4 billion for the ownership rights of the

All but a hand full were executed on sight. In the next three episodes, also known as the original
trilogy, it centers on a young man, finding his role in the fight against the Galactic Empire. The man
known as Luke Skywalker discovers he is to become a Jedi knight and joins the Rebels to defeat the
Empire. This is what George Lucas created and what Disney plans to build off of. However, the
television series that just finished its seventh season does not follow this timeline. Such example
include the introduction to a padawan, apprentice to a key character, under the teachings of Anakin

was there any mention of a padawan to Anakin in any of the movies George Lucas created. Stunts
like this lead people astray with inaccurate information. This is not what George Lucas had in mind.
This is one of some of the reasons how Disney may be ruining a much loved universe. While Star

Redemption In A Tale Of Two Cities
Redemption is a privilege. Redemption is a chance that must be taken, when is given. In a Tale of
Two cities, Charles Dickens was explaining with the dialogue of the characters and imagery in the
book that redemption is a second chance that is not always given. When redemption is given it
must be used to the full extent. One character that found redemption was, Sydney Carton. He was a
man that did not live the best life. With the ends of not having everything he wanted, he found a
chance of redemption and took it with its full extent. Carton s chance for redemption was to give
his life for his lover s husband. He took his chance for redemption and made a very important
sacrifice. With the Darnay s already dealing with a supposed, death this
Matt Bush Biography
4,360 days That s how long it took former No. 1 overall pick Matt Bush to make his major league
debut. Bush s career, long looked at as a tragedy, can now take on a different narrative: redemption.

A shortstop from Mission Bay High School in the suburbs of San Diego, the San Diego Padres
selected Bush with the top pick in the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft. With the selection, Bush
became the first high school shortstop drafted first overall since the Seattle Mariners took Alex
Rodriguez in 1993. However, the accomplishment was short lived.

Both on and off the field, Bush s career got off to a rocky start. Weeks after being drafted and
receiving a $3.15 million signing bonus, he was arrested on suspicion of felony assault, and

A broken ankle in 2006 hampered his ability to quickly move up the Padres organization s ranks.
In 2007, the Padres converted Bush to a pitcher, partially because of his ability to throw a 100 mph
fastball and his success in high school, going 5 1 with a 0.73 ERA. Bush, however, couldn t stay out
of trouble.

In 2009, Bush was charged with misdemeanor battery stemming from an alleged drunkenly assault
on high school lacrosse players in San Diego. Later that year, the Padres traded Bush to the Toronto
Blue Jays. Following another alcohol related incident, Toronto cut Bush, who was given another
chance in 2010 when the Tampa Bay Rays signed him to a minor league contract.

In his two seasons with the Rays organization (2010, 2011), Bush put together a 7 3 record in 56
appearances, never making it past AA. However, weeks before the 2012 season began, his life
was changed forever. On March 22, 2012, Bush clipped a 72 year old motorcyclist and ran him
over as he lay on the ground. He was arrested on several charges, including driving under the
influence and fleeing the scene of an accident. Bush pleaded no contest to driving under the
influence with serious bodily injury and received 51 months in prison. He served 39 of those
months and was released last
