5th - Linear - Programming Past Paper Questions

The document contains a series of linear programming problems from CXC past papers, focusing on inequalities related to purchasing nuts, flowers, and clothing items. Each question requires the formulation of inequalities based on given constraints, graphing these inequalities, and determining maximum profit scenarios. The problems emphasize the application of mathematical concepts to real-world situations involving budgeting and profit maximization.

Question 1

A vendor buys x kg of peanuts and y kg of cashew nuts.

a) To get a good bargain, she must buy a minimum of 10 kg of peanuts and a minimum of 5 kg of
cashew nuts

Write TWO inequalities which satisfy those conditions

i) She buys no more than 60 kg of nuts. Peanuts cost $4.00 per kg. and cashew nuts cost $8.00
per kg and she spends at least $200.

Write TWO inequalities which satisfy these conditions

b) Using a scale of 2 cm to represent 10 kg on each axis, draw the graph of the FOUR inequalities in
a) , i) and ii)

On your graph, shade ONLY the region which satisfies all four inequalities.

c) The profit on the sale of 1 kg of peanuts is $2.00 and on 1 kg of cashew nuts is $5.00.

i)Using your graph, determine the number of kilograms of each type of nuts the vendor must sell
in order to make a maximum profit.

ii) Calculate the maximum profit

Question 2

A florist uses x lilies and y roses to make bouquets. The total number of flowers in a bouquet must be
less than or equal to 45.

a) Write an inequality in x and y to represent this condition

b) There must be a least 10 lilies in the bouquet. Write an inequality to represent this condition.

c) The number of lilies is less than or equal to twice the number of roses. Write an inequality in x

and y to represent this condition

d) Using a scle of 1 cm to 5 units on each axis, graph the inequalities in a), b) and c) above

e) Shade ONLY the region which satisfies the three inequalities in a) , b) and c) above
f) The profit on a lily is $1, and the profit on a rose is $2. Write an expression for the total profit

made on a bouquet

g) Use the graph to determine the maximum profit that could be made on a bouquet.

Question 3

a) A boy wants to buy x ties and y shirts.

He must buy at least two but no more than 6 ties

(i) Write an inequality to represent this information

He must buy at least one shirt

(ii) Write an inequality to represent this information

The boy has $196 to buy ties and shirts. A tie costs $14 and a shirt costs $28.

(iii) Write an inequality to represent this information

b) Using a scale of 1 cm to represent 1 unit on both axes, draw the graphs of the inequalities
written (a) (i), (ii) and (iii) above. Shade the region which satisfies these inequalities

c) The boy sells the shirts and ties to make a profit of $5 on each tie and $8 on each shirt.

(i) Write an expression to represent his total profit, P

(ii) Use your graph to determine the number of shirts and ties that he must buy to obtain

maximum profit

(iii) Calculate the maximum profit
