SR is a measure of the ability of a motor to keep a constant shaft
speed as load varies.
A separately excited DC motor is a motor whose eld circuit is supplied from a
separate constant-voltage power supply, while a shunt DC motor is a motor whose
eld circuit gets its power directly across the armature terminals of the motor.
A starting resistor is used in DC motor circuits to limit the high inrush
current that occurs when a DC motor is started. The resistor limits the
current that ows through the motor and reduces the strain on the power
supply and other components. As the motor speeds up and generates a
back-EMF, the current through the motor decreases, and the starting
resistor is no longer needed and can be bypassed or removed from the
circuit.
During startup of a shunt DC generator, the residual magnetism in the eld poles induces a
small voltage in the armature winding. This small voltage creates a current in the shunt eld
winding, which strengthens the magnetic eld in the eld poles, inducing a larger voltage in
the armature winding. This positive feedback loop continues until the generator produces its
rated voltage. If the generator fails to reach its rated voltage, an external voltage source can
be used to provide a small amount of excitation current to the shunt eld winding to start the
voltage buildup process.
If voltage buildup fails to occur in a shunt DC generator during startup, it could be due to
insu cient residual magnetism, high circuit resistance, or faulty connections. To remedy the
problem, the residual magnetism can be increased using an external DC voltage source,
circuit resistance can be checked and reduced, faulty connections can be located and
repaired, or the eld current can be increased using an external DC voltage source. The
appropriate corrective action will depend on the root cause of the problem.
