Knight Of Labor Essay
After the civil war ended, America witnessed its rapid growth in industry, urbanization, and
capitalism. When the price of living increased, workers desired for a better wage and working
condition. Different types of worker unions appeared in the nation, representing different interests
and different groups of workers. The Knight of Laborwanted to include all workers from different
background, but it was difficult to organize such a diverse group of workers whose demands and
bargaining power were different. The Socialist Party looked for a way to change society
fundamentally and emphasized on a class struggle of the working class against the employer class.
But they could not solve the problem of wages and working conditions that the workers... Show more

AFL were unwilling to participate in a lot political activities to transform the function of society.
Instead, AFL adjusted to the real social conditions and focused on the immediate need of labors.
After economic depression, the price of the living grew dramatically. Workers eagerly escaped
from the increased poverty and wanted to have a shorter working hour. AFL reflected [its] ability
among the proponents of the new unionisms to distinguish what was immediately attainable from
what was ultimately desirable. It also flowed from their belief that ultimate end could never be
won in the absence of stable organizations that satisfied the urgent needs of their members (SR
p.235). The federation had a rational view on the social condition and put emphasis on the
members. In local unions, AFL organized successful strikes to get what workers wanted. In a
national scale, it could call for more general program to push the labor movement. Moreover, if its
every action was practical and adjusted to the social condition, AFL could efficiently make a change
with the employers. Labors would prefer AFL rather than other unions because their needs can be
satisfied. Unless a union satisfied its members demand, the union could not last for a longer time and

Strategic Challenges For Local Communities
Strategic Challenges for Local Communities The Department of Homeland Security released the
2014 Quadrennial Homeland Security Review on June 18, 2014 as required by the Homeland
Security Act of 2002 and its amendments. This review outlined the current state of preparedness, as
well as the future areas of concentration. It also determined six strategic challenges facing the nation:
terrorist threat; growing cyber threats; biological concerns as a whole; nuclear terrorism;
transnational criminal organizations; and natural hazards. The basic building block of emergency
management in the U.S. is the local community. Each step begins here. Threat assessments are
completed on the local level. Planning, mitigation, and response are all responsibilities of the local
community to support the state and Federal practice using the guidance provided by both.
One of the best guidance documents for these communities is the Comprehensive Preparedness
Guide 201 (CPG201). In this guide, communities will complete the Threat and Hazard Identification
and Risk Assessment. The THIRA has a detailed four step process in developing a robust Risk
Assessment to allow the community to develop its plans. The first step is to identify the threats and
hazards of concern to the community. Some of the challenges described by the Department of
Homeland Security may not be applicable to the community or may pose extremely limited threat.
The second step in to give the threats context which states how

Tata Motors Case
Case Analysis, Tata Motors
International Business and Economics
Amsterdam Business School, 2010

Introduction
Tata Motors is an automotive company to take notice of. Representing the evolving Indian
population and growing economy of one of the world s key emerging markets, it is a market
leader for commercial vehicles and third for passenger vehicles in the Indian market. It shocked
the world by introducing the $2000 Nano in 2009 and also by growing its portfolio by purchasing
Jaguar Land Rover, a company that at first glance embodies values and skills very different to its
own. At the same time, Tata Motors has also made some very smart global moves through its

India is not only becoming a key market for the sale of automobiles but also for the production of
automobiles. By 2016 India is expected to output 3 million of the world s small cars (compared to
the current production of 1.8 million for all passenger vehicles. Additionally, it is expected that
more and more parts of the supply chain will migrate to India as it provides low cost supplies,
highly skilled engineers, and creative solution to automobile designs.
Although Tata Motors is a market leader for CVs in India, it falls a distant third to Maruti Suzuki
for PVs. As of February 2010, Maruti Suzuki captured 44% of the domestic PV market, whereas
Tata only has 14%, slightly behind Hyundai with 16%.

Maruti Suzuki is a key domestic competitor, especially since it commands a first mover advantage.
This is because it was the first to offer a modern car to India when it launched the Maruti800 in
1983. This name has become synonymous in India will small car.

The Growth And Development Of A Free Market
INTRODUCTION

What development means depends on how the rich nations feel, Environment is no exception to this
rule . (Sachs, 1992, p.26)

Ever since the 1970s, capitalism has entered into the era of neoliberal development. Simply put,
capitalism is an economic system that propagates private and or corporate ownership trough
investments. Private decisions, prices, production and distribution of goods are determined by the
competition in a free market. All of this in turn decides the path of aforementioned investments.
Neoliberalism is the academic theory behind the development model being currently pursued for
economic growth and development. This model of development propagates economic policies that
promote a free flow of trade and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is then followed by of analyzing the efforts made by international agencies and governments to
address environmental issues. The analysis of these international/global projects will help in
answering whether so far capitalism has been successful in addressing environmental concerns or
not. Taking a Marxist perspective, the essay emphasizes that while awareness has been raised
exponentially about the dangers of environmental deterioration, capitalism has a long way to go
before it can be called green . On a spectrum of black to bright green, capitalism is currently
swimming in the murky depths of brown. For an environmentally sound world, capitalism itself may
need to be replaced with a different economic system.

THERE IS NO ONE PERSPECTIVE TO ENVIRONEMTAL CRISES

Core ideologies dominating the environmental debate revolve around neoliberalism, Marxism and
environmentalism. All of these ideologies are umbrella terms for they bifurcate into many sub
categories or approaches to environmental crises.

While many believe that Marx and later on Engels, had nothing useful to say about the environment
since their critique of capitalism was believed to be limited to class struggle and exploitation of
labour under a capitalist class. However, Marx (1964, 1970, 1977, 1981) and Engels (1973, 1979)
have, perhaps, the longest historical connection to environmentalism. For the longest time,
environmental socialist did not derive any clear arguments from Marxist
British Colonization Of India Essay
Historical Context and Background
British involvement on the Indian subcontinent began early in the 17th Century through the British
East India Company and its business ventures and dealings. The early British Empire was
composed of several self governing colonies which had been settled in by British civilians, and
colonial policy was one of salutary neglect (Brown 2010). It is not unfair to say that Britain s
relationship with India was one of political subordination, but economic exploitation formed the core
of this relationship. The colonisation of India by the British Empire was clearly geared to benefit the
mother country, even at the cost of the colony (Modern India 2010).
Colonial exploitation was carried out through three distinct phases over time. The first phase of
mercantilism, which took place between 1757 and 1813, was one of direct plunder in which
surplus Indian revenues were used to buy Indian finished goods to be exported back to Britain
(Modern India 2010). In the second phase, from 1813 to 1858, India was converted into a source
of raw material and a market for British goods. The third and final phase from 1858 onwards, was
one of finance imperialism in which British capital began to control Indian banks, foreign trading
firms and managing agencies in India. This phased exploitation was carried out through a range of
economic policies, primarily in the industrial and agricultural sectors of the colonial economy of
India (Modern History 2010).

Whaling Should Be Banned
Aside from radical protests against whaling, other NGOs such as Greenpeace have peacefully
protested the ongoing whaling, by avoiding fleet wars the SSCS partakes in. By 1973, Greenpeace
confronted whaling fleets in response to the decline of blue whales and other species. In the midst of
a peaceful battle to defend the whales, Greenpeacesnapped a photograph of a dead sperm whale,
burdening the public to the IWC in requests for justice. Responding to the incident in 1979, the
IWC established the Indian Ocean Whale Sanctuary as a conservation measure, and in 1982 the
IWC declared a Global Moratorium. The desire of the IWC to conserve their image of anti whalers
driven them to act immediately from the accusations over Japan. The establishment of the
moratorium was a plan to cease commercial whalingin 1986 and in 2003 to allow for the... Show

Countries such as Norway, Iceland and Japan declared an objection to the moratorium (1982). By
declaring an objection to the moratorium the countries are allowed to practice commercial whaling
under their own regulation, while abiding to the rules of the International Convention established
by the IWC (IWC). However, in the midst of the objection, Greenpeace activists came across one
of the first provable cases of corruption that highlighted Japan as a suspect. In 2010 two of
Greenpeace s activists known as The Tokyo Two exposed Japan s scientific whaling program by
uncovering a whale meat scandal.
The Tokyo Two gentlemen uncovered one of the most controversial scandals in the history of
whaling commercial whaling. While the JWA s Object statement reads: We are concerned with
people having the wrong perception of whaling , lack of credibility grew once the The Tokyo Two
busted their corruption. In 2008 the two of Greenpeace campaigners from Japan exposed corruption
in the whaling industry. According to Greenpeace, prime cuts of whale
Racial Boundaries
In the novel Police, Power and the Production of Racial Boundaries by Ana Muniz, exposes how
entrepreneurs, law enforcement, society and the criminal justice system shape our views towards
minority races. Considering this, these influential groups and systems would use political policies
and everyday procedures to criminalize and incriminate the African American and Latino
communities in the Los Angeles area. Furthermore, she reveals the development of multiple unit
housing, residential and school desegregation, and lastly Los Angeles first gang injunction and how
people of power shape our lives. As Ana starts off she first introduces how the neighborhood of

The main intent of the gang injunction was applied into this neighborhood to maintain race and class
boundaries by which the police and city prosecutors executed. Gang injunctions are issued by the
court in order to restraining order against a gang. If alleged gang members are listed on an
injunction, they are not allowed to engage in behavior that is otherwise legal, including but not
limited to congregating in groups of two or more, standing in public for more than five minutes,
wearing certain clothes, and making certain gestures. They can be arrested if they engage in any of
these activities (Muniz. Pg 34). With that being said, although gang injunctions have the intent to
control gangs and bring less crime to neighborhoods they actually criminalize communities of color
by stigmatizing public space in target neighborhoods. In addition, scholars assert gang injunctions
are used to control black and Latino communities through mechanisms of criminalization (Muniz.
Pg.37). Thus, gang injunctions control our lives by telling is what we can and what we can were or
were we can hanging out at. Usually people of color or the lower class are the ones who are not
notified where these gang injunctions are taken place and for how long. It is the white and upper
class who take part in these injunctions. Business owners favored gang injunctions because they
legalized the removal of undesirables from middle class entertainment and consumer centers
(Muniz.Pg79). Considering this, the wealthy class of society just want to get more wealthy by
removing the unwanted people from their communities and building shops, markets and stores to
generate more money into their

made in a bordering country which is Mexico. For this Wal Mart has established a joint venture.
Subsequently, the group has established in Puerto Rico, Brazil and Argentina, in parallel with the
Latino America market. The company has also invested in Canada since it is a close market in
terms of commercial policy. The Asian continent: Wal Mart s strategy on this continent concerns
major markets such as Japan and China. The penetration was done due to the joining system. Indeed,
the culture and the Chinese legislation was being so significantly different, the implantation without
changing the American business concepts would have been too risky. The European continent:
The organization has established in Europe in two countries, England and Germany. A same strategy
of penetration was settled for both countries but two contrary results. A huge success for the first,
thanks to a very close culture between the two countries, the political American commercial was
enough to conquer this British market. For the second country, Germany, the failure was flagrant.
Hard discount being already very developed, it was so difficult for Wal Mart to find his clientele
that the giant withdrew from this market
Earthquake Of The 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake
1.Introduction
In the wake of the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake and resulting tsunami, over 4000 scientists,
government officials, NGOs and UN representatives met in Kobe, Japan to address one of the most
important challenges the world has to face: disaster risk reduction (DRR). The outcome of the
conference was the 10 year Hyogo Framework for Action 2005 2015. Endorsed by 168 countries, the
document promotes 3 main goals: the integration of DRR into sustainable development policies and
planning, building resilience to hazards and incorporating risk reduction approaches into the
implementation of emergency preparedness, response and recovery programmes. In order to achieve
these goals, the framework states 5 priorities of action:
1)ensure that DRR is a national and a local priority with a strong institutional basis for
implementation;
2)identify, assess and monitor disaster risks and enhance early warning;
3)use knowledge, innovation, and education to build a culture of safety and resilience at all levels;
4)reduce the underlying risk factors;
5)strengthen disaster preparedness for effective response at all levels.1
The main purpose of this paper is to provide an objective view of the main achievements and
failings of the Hyogo Framework for Action and to suggest improvements for the next global
strategy.
2.Achievements
There is an intense debate about what are the most important results of the framework, after almost
10 years since its publishing. However, one point
Systems Thinking And The Health Care System
Systems thinking was developed during this SMAC by learning to identify the connections of
Information tecnology and the health care system. This SMAC involved the understand of the
health care system and the service they provide and how they operates. As a result, while systems
thinking allows new and useful methods to improve patient safety, it comes with it its own
intangible challenges that, if not documented and addressed, will both slow improvement and
present new harm. This SMAC allowed us to see the challenges that healthcare system faces and
how they analyzed and apply systems thinking in assessing them. Understanding the challenges by
completion of a SWOT analysis. Which required the development of an action plan of improvement
for patient safety by implementing and maintaining new processes and practices such has how can
the functions of each component be optimized so that the results of the system are maximized? How
can we identify and monitor for unintended consequences? How can we intervene to prevent harm
from unintended consequences. It required the development of an action plan of improvement for
the future. We have improved our ability to understand how health care system achieve the
organizational goal of safe and excellent patient care by developing my ability at systems thinking.
The contributions to this SMAC display both the complexity of a systems method to patient safety,
and the promise of new ways in thinking about the systems within
Playing the Stock Market Game Essay
There are many different ways to save money and there are different things to save for. A savings
plan for an immediate want is apparently different than a savings strategy for retirement. One may
choose to select stocks, bonds, or mutual funds for a savings strategy, however, my personal choice
is to invest in bonds first, then mutual funds.
My savings strategy selection process for an immediate want includes taking a portion of my
income and storing it in a money market bank account to cover the expenses, since the interest rate
changes daily for money market accounts. My savings strategy selection process for retirement
includes a combination of municipal bonds, mutual funds, and maybe a few reliable stocks.
However, I would invest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In return for that money, the issuer provides you with a bond in which it promises to pay a certain
rate of interest during the life of the bond, and to repay the face value of the bond (the principle) at
its maturity date. Among the types of bonds available for investment are: U.S. government
securities, municipal bonds, corporate bonds, mortgage and asset backed securities, federal agency
securities and foreign government bonds. Zero interest or coupon municipal bonds are my number
one choice because these bonds can be purchased for a small amount, then at its maturity date, or
earlier call date these bonds usually pay the face value. Now to me, this is a smart investment choice
especially for retirement.
A mutual fund is nothing more than a collection of stocks and/or bonds. One can

think of a mutual fund as a company that brings together a group of people and invests

their money in stocks, bonds, and other securities. Each investor owns shares, which

represent a portion of the holdings of the fund. By nature I am not a gambler, so when investing my
money, I want less risks as possible. So let it be known that bonds and mutual funds are safer and
have less risk than stocks. This does not mean that some stocks are not good sound investment
choices.
The idea behind diversification is to invest in a large number of assets so that a loss in any
particular investment is minimized by gains
Mesopotamian And Hellenistic Art
In History, artistic achievements have represented cultural advancements in civilized society. The
artist s ability to express themselves on a surface plane has progressed immensely from the
prehistoric era through the present. At one time, techniques were so primitive, simple handheld
figures and tools were all artisans had the ability to craft. However, Mesopotamian and Greek and
Hellenistic Art specifically, modernized the techniques and boundaries of sculpture and figurative
art. As time goes on, an artist s ability to express themselves within their art has progressed. Artists
possess the ability to express personal beliefs through depictions, of which are so detailed many art
historians interpret their meanings similarly. Historically... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Besides the past as a claim for complex art impling cultural prominence in societies, the present is
a great representation of a society s cultural qualities. The United States population s ability to
express themselves has grown the most in recent decades. Specifically in art, one can express
themselves however they want, no: restrictions, limitations, or necessary guidelines. This
capability to express one s self is comparable to our cultures recent stressed activism for the
freedom to act without criticism. Artist s role now, is to be as personal, unique, and creative as
possible. Our society is going through a change of cultural acceptance for those who feel oppressed.
Art is currently about being creative and expressing emotions or ideas through a surface plane
medium. However, it always was not this way. Artists and their art world, from century to century,
responds to their societies attributes. Because of this, past cultures prominence can be interpreted
and represented through their art. Recalling the oldest known art periods, first, the Prehistoric Art
era, we can see societies from b.c. through 2500 b.c., that their cultures were advanced. From
personal representations of nature and deities, these people s small ability to create different types
of art shows how they were more skilled craftsman, instead of artists. Cave Paintings and other art
forms represent their hunting and living styles. For example, the Women from Willendorf, can show
how they expressed themselves through art but, art was not considered to be a profession in the
Prehistoric Art era
