Introduction
Natural disasters are powerful and unexpected events caused by nature. They can lead to
widespread damage to life, infrastructure, and the environment. Disasters such as earthquakes,
floods, and cyclones are among the most dangerous. This project explores these three events, their
causes, impacts, and how we can protect ourselves before, during, and after they strike.
Earthquake
Definition: A sudden shaking of the Earths surface due to movements in tectonic plates.
Causes: Movement of Earth's plates, volcanic eruptions.
Mitigation:
- Before: Construct quake-resistant buildings, secure heavy items.
- During: Drop, Cover, and Hold on. Stay away from windows.
- After: Help injured, avoid damaged structures.
Dos:
- Stay calm
- Go to open areas
- Shut off utilities
Donts:
- Dont use elevators
- Dont panic
Flood
Definition: Flood is the overflow of water that submerges land that is usually dry.
Causes: Heavy rainfall, broken dams, melting glaciers.
Mitigation:
- Before: Create drainage systems, maintain embankments.
- During: Move to safe high ground immediately.
- After: Drink clean water, avoid flood zones.
Dos:
- Follow weather reports
- Keep an emergency kit
Donts:
- Dont drive through water
- Dont touch wet wires
Cyclone
Definition: A violent circular storm that forms over warm ocean waters.
Causes: Warm seas, moisture, and low-pressure systems.
Mitigation:
- Before: Strengthen rooftops, prepare emergency plans.
- During: Stay indoors, keep away from windows.
- After: Assist in relief work, beware of debris and live wires.
Dos:
- Store food and clean water
- Stay tuned to alerts
Donts:
- Dont go outside
- Avoid flood-prone areas
Conclusion
Natural disasters are a part of Earth's dynamic system. While they cannot be stopped, their effects
can be reduced through awareness, planning, and smart action. This project helped me understand
how preparedness saves lives and limits damage.
