1 MEANS OF EGRESS REQUIREMENTS
8.1 General
• Means of egress headroom is not less than 2300 mm with projections from the
ceiling not less than 2000 mm.
• The minimum ceiling height is maintained for not less than 50% of the ceiling area
of any room or space, provided that the ceiling height of the remaining ceiling
area is not less than 2000 mm.
• Means of egress are continuously maintained free of all obstructions or
impediments to full instant use.
• Guards are provided on the open side of stairs, ramps, and landings located above
750mm from the floor or grade plan below at a distance within 900mm measure
horizontally.
Furnishing and decoration in means of egress do not obstruct by any means
the exits or their access or egress.
8.2 Components
Doors:
• Door openings in means of egress are not less than 800mm and not more than
1200mm.
• Doors have landings from each side not less than the width of the widest leaf or
stair they serve whichever is greater. Landing length is not less than 1100mm
measured in the direction of travel.
• Door leaf is swinging in the direction of egress:
o When serving a room with an occupant load of 50 and more.
o Where the door is used in an exit enclosure.
o Where the door serves a high hazard area.
• During its swing door leaf is not obstructing more than half the required corridor
width.
• Thresholds at doorways do not exceed 13mm. Doors are readily open from the
egress side whenever the building is occupied.
• Per SBC 201 all locking devices on doors in any means of escape that impede or
prohibit egress, or that cannot be easily disengaged, are prohibited.

• For access control doors, doors to be unlocked automatically upon the use of a Handrails & Guards
push bar or lever. • Handrails are provided on both sides within 760mm of all portions of the required egress width
with minimum clear width between handrails 510mm.
• Doors normally required to be kept closed are self-closing or automatic closing.
• Handrails are not less than 850mm and not more than 950mm above the surface of the tread.
With a clearance not less than 57mm between the handrail and the wall.
Stairs at entrances:
• Handrails are continuous for the full length of each flight and inside handrails are continuous
• Dimensional criteria: between flight and landing.
• Handrails are continuously graspable along their entire length.
• Maximum riser height 175mm
• Handrail are returned to the wall, walking surface, and guard or continuous to the handrail of the
• Minimum riser height 100mm adjacent flight.
• Guards are not less than 1100mm.
• Minimum tread depth 280mm
• Guards shall be provided where various components that require service are located within 3000
• Minimum headroom 2000mm mm of a roof edge or open side of a walking surface and such edge or open side is located more
than 750 mm above the floor, roof or grade below.
• Maximum height between landing 3600mm
• The guard shall extend not less than 750 mm beyond each end of such components. The guard
shall be constructed so as to prevent the passage of a sphere 525 mm in diameter
• Min. stair width is 1200mm
• Guards are provided for all means of egress open sides that exceed 760mm above the floor
below.
Ramps:
• Ramps shall comply with the provisions set forth in SBC 201, Section 1012. Ramps 8.3 Occupant load
used as part of a means of egress shall have a running slope not steeper than one

Occupant Load Factor
• The minimum width and required capacity of a means of egress ramp shall be not Occupancy (m2/person)
less than that required for corridors by Section 1020.2. The clear width of a ramp Residential 9 (gross)
between handrails, if provided, or other permissible projections shall be 900 mm

Meeting room
• The rise for any ramp run shall be 750 mm maximum. Offices 9 (gross)
Prayer Area 0.65 (Net)
• The minimum headroom in all parts of the means of egress ramp shall be not less Storage/ Elec. room/ 28(gross)
than 2000 mm. loading dock

• Egress capacity is based on the below factors for sprinklered building:
Residential 75M 38M 15M
Level components ( corridors, doors ) and ramps 5.1mm/person.
N.B: A dead-end is not be limited if the dead-end corridor length is less than 2.5m its least width.
Table 7 travel distances
8.5 Number of means of egress
• If the occupant load is more than 500 but not more than 1000, not less than 3
means of egress are provided.
• If the occupant load is more than 1000, not less than 4 means of egress are
provided.
Table 6 Number of exits
• If the occupant load is more than 10 persons per residential unit, the unit shall be
provided with second exit door.
8.6 Arrangement of means of egress and travel distance to exits
• Every corridor provides access to not less than 2 approved exits without passing
through any intervening rooms or spaces other than corridors and lobbies.
• Where 2 exits, exit accesses, or exit discharges are required they are located at a
distance from one another not less than 1/3 the length of the maximum overall
diagonal dimension of the building or area to be served.
• For Assembly areas& offices, Travel distance, Common path, and Dead-end
corridors are arranged in order not to exceed the following:
Occupancy Travel Common Dead End
Distance Path
Assembly A 75m O.L>=50 6m
persons not
allowed
