Relations Functions

The document is a worksheet for a mathematics examination on Relations and Functions, consisting of 14 compulsory questions divided into five sections: multiple choice, very short answer, short answer, long answer, and a case study. Each section has specific types of questions with designated marks, and calculators are not allowed. The questions cover various concepts related to relations and functions, including reflexive relations, equivalence relations, and properties of functions.

General Instructions :
Read the following instructions very carefully and strictly follow them :
(i) This question paper contains 14 questions. All questions are compulsory.
(ii) This question paper is divided into five Sections A, B, C, D and E
(iii)In Section A, Questions no. 1 to 5 are multiple choice questions (MCQs) and questions
number 6 is Assertion-Reason based questions of 1 mark each.
(iv) In Section B, Questions no. 7 to 8 are very short answer (VSA) type questions, carrying 2
marks each.
(v) In Section C, Questions no. 9 to 10 are short answer (SA) type questions, carrying 3 marks
each.
(vi) In Section D, Questions no. 11 to 13 are long answer (LA) type questions carrying 5 marks
each.
(vii) In Section E, Questions no. 14 is a case study based question carrying 4 marks .
(viii) There is no overall choice and internal choices as well .
(ix) Use of calculators is not allowed

SECTION-A
This section comprises multiple choice questions (MCQs) of 1 mark each
1. Let A = { 3 , 5} then number of reflexive relations on A is
A. 2 B. 4 C. 0 D. 8

2. Let R = { (x,y) : x 2+ y 2=4 } be a relation on Z . Then domain of R is

A. {2 , 0 ,1} B. { -2 , -1 ,0 ,1 ,2} C. {-2,0,2} D. none

3. No of equivalence relations defined on A = { a , b , c} is
A. 5 B. 31 C. 23 D. 23
4. Let A = { 1, 2 , 3} then number reflexive relations containing (1,2) is
A. 1 B .2 C. 3 D. 4

5. The function f : R→ R defined by f(x) = x 2+ 2 is

A. Bijective B. One-One C. Onto D. Neither one-one nor onto
6. Assertion & Reasoning question :
Assertion : The relation R defined on the set A = {1,2,3,4} by R = { (x,y): 3x-y =0 }
Then domain = { 1,2,3,4} and Range R = { 3 , 6 , 9 ,12}
Reason: Domain & range of a relation is respectively the set of all the first and 2nd entries
of the distinct ordered pairs of the relation .

SECTION-B
This section comprises very short answer (VSA) type questions of 2 marks each.

7. Prove that the function f: N→ N defined by f(x) = x 2+ x+1 is one -one but not onto.

8. Check if the relation R is defined by f(x) = {(a,b) : a ≤ b } on the set of reals is symmetric and
transitive .
SECTION-C
This section comprises short answer (SA) type questions of 3 marks each.

9. Consider f: R+¿ →[−5 , ∝]¿ is given by f(x) = 9 x 2+ 6 x−5 , Show that f is bijective .

[Link] that Intersection of two equivalence relations is going to be an equivalence relation .

SECTION-D
This section comprises Long answer (LA) type questions of 5 marks each
11. Let R be a relation on the set of naturals defined as

R = {((a , b), (c ,d )):ad (b+c )=bc (a+ d)}

x
12. Show that function f : R→(−1 , 1) defined by f(x) = is bijective.
1+|x|

13. Given a non empty set X and R is a relation on P(X ) by R = {(A,B) : A ⊂ B , A ,B ∈ P (X )}

Check R for reflexive , symmetric and Transitive .

SECTION-E
This section comprises 1 case study question of 4 marks.
14. Archana visited one exhibition with family where she saw a huge swing which was moving
like a parabola whose equation is y = x 2
i). Is the function y = x 2 is bijective?

ii). For f: N→ R where f(x) = x 2 find the range set

iii). If domain = codomain = Z for f then will it be bijective?
