Control System Design and Analysis

The document outlines a control system design and analysis revision, focusing on a second-order system's transfer function, natural frequency, damping ratio, and key performance characteristics such as peak time, percent overshoot, and settling time. It also includes tasks for converting state equations to transfer functions, calculating closed-loop transfer functions, determining system stability based on gain, and analyzing response types for different damping scenarios. The document emphasizes the significance of performance evaluation in real-world applications.

Control System Design and Analysis - Revision

1. Consider a second-order system with the following transfer function.

100
𝐺 (𝑆 ) =
𝑆 2 + 6𝑆 + 25

a) Determine the natural frequency (ꞷn) and damping ratio (ζ) of the system.

b) Calculate the peak time (TP), percent overshot (%OS), and settling time (TS).

c) Sketch the step response of the system and label the key characteristics such as overshoot,

settling time, and rise time.

d) Discuss the significance of each characteristic (peak time, percent overshoot, settling time,

rise time) in the performance evaluation of a control system. How do these characteristics

affect the system's behavior and performance in real-world applications?

2. Convert the state and output equations shown below to a transfer function.
3. The forward transfer function of the closed loop control system shown in Figure 1 is
given below.

(𝑆 + 3)
𝐺 (𝑆 ) =
(𝑆 + 6)(𝑆 + 1)

a) Calculate the closed loop transfer function T(s).

b) Determine the poles and zeroes of the closed loop transfer function T(s).
c) Obtain the time domain response c(t) of the system for a unit step input.
d) Obtain the steady state error for a unit step input.

4. Find the range of gain, K, for the system of Figure 2 that will cause the system to be
stable. Assume K > 0.

Figure 2
5. Find the closed-loop transfer function R(s)/ C(s) for the system described by the forward
transfer function.

𝐾
𝐺 (𝑆 ) =
(𝑆 + 6)(𝑆 + 1)

a) Analyze the requirements for K to achieve the following response types:

i) Overdamped response
ii) Critically damped response
iii) Underdamped response
