Analysis Of Dorothy Retallack s Research On Plants And...
Dorothy Retallack s research over plants and music started from just the necessity to fulfill a
requirement for her undergraduate biology class. They were required to do an experiment and she
wasn t sure what to do for it, so her professor asked if there was anyway she could use her major in
it. So she decided she wanted to explore the idea if musiccan affect a plants growth. She ended up
running four experiments and writing a book, The Sound of Music and Plants, because the
newspaper wrongly quoted her and miss worded the results to her experiments. What spiked her
interest was research that had been done before her on African Violets. The study conducted
exposed the violets to sustained tones, B and D, to attempt to revive the drooping violets. The
results of this test were that the drooping African Violets had become greener and began to regain
lively shape. So Retallack s interest was spiked and was encouraged to run similar experiments to
see if she could get a similar result. For her first experiment, Retallack and a friend made space in
her house to run the tests. She used a self winding tape to play the tones every five minutes, then
to have silence for every other five minutes and this was played for a period of twelve hours a day.
The plants she used for the experiment were philodendron, corn, geranium, and African violets. For
the first 10 days all the plants thrived abundantly. However, by the 14th day the leaves of the
geraniums in experimental group began
How Technology Has Changed The Modern World
Robotics have been traced back thousands of years. Robot like machines were mentioned in
ancient legends as well as in classical mythology. Mechanical servants were said to work as
handmaidens and clay robots allegedly helped fight enemies. Hephaestus, Greek god of fire and
metal craft, even had robotic three legged tables that helped him around his workshop. But an
ancient engineer named Yan Shi is credited by many for building the first real automata, which
meant self operating machine. This was during the Zhou dynasty in around 1000 BCE/CE. In 350
BCE/CE a Greek mathematician and philosopher named Archytas created a mechanical bird that
was propelled by steam. The Pigeon could fly more than 650 feet (200m), long before airplanes were
invented.

During 1st century AD, Heron of Alexandria described other machines that would later be the
beginnings of modern robotics. He designed robotic clocks, kitchen appliances and coin operated
machines. Other early robot mechanisms were built simply for entertainment. Early engineers
created delightful moving mechanical puppets, musicians, and dancers.

The first modern robot is considered to be the radio controlled boat designed and built by inventor
Nikola Tesla and made public in 1898. A wireless transmitter made the boat move, turn, and flash its
lights. Even though robots were soon built using on the same basic principles as Tesla s boat, they
were not yet able to perform pre programmed tasks. Once that hurdle was
What Makes a Good Vpn
Virtual private networks (VPN) provide an encrypted connection between distributed sites over a
public network (e.g., the Internet). By contrast, a private network uses dedicated circuits and
possibly encryption. The basic idea is to provide an encrypted IP tunnel through the Internet that
permits distributed sites to communicate securely. VPN s permit secure, encrypted connections
between a company s private network and remote users through a third party service provider. A
VPN can grow to accommodate more users and different locations much easier than a leased line.
In fact, scalability is a major advantage that VPN s have over typical leased lines (dedicated
circuits). Unlike with leased lines, where the cost increases in proportion... Show more content on

With RAS you would need access to the actual wire or the telephone switch being utilized and
VPN s utilize a lot of different devices when crossing the internet making it more susceptible to
hacking. When purchasing a VPN for your company one of the first things that you need to
decide is what type of protocol you would like to use. One of the more common protocols used is
the Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP). PPTP is a protocol that is used to allow users to
connect to their corporate network via the internet. This is a relatively inexpensive way to provide
remote access to your network considering that most Microsoft operating systems come with some
sort of PPTP client. Other things to keep in mind when coming up with a VPN solution are the
implementation and design and the cost of the solution. The cost is especially important
considering that the uses of VPN s are used to help save your company money. There are four
types of attacks used against VPN s. Those four types are impersonation, integrity, disclosure, and
denial of service. Impersonation attacks are used just as the word says; it is when someone tries to
get into your network while posing as someone else. This type of attack can be greatly reduced by
using the strong authentication methods supported by PPTP. Integrity attacks are the changing of
information during a transfer of data. The most common integrity attacks take place on email
messages where a hacker
The Cause Of Generalized Anxiety Disorders
In the United States, 85% of all adults and teenagers, more females than males, have been
depressed at one point in their life. (Davey) Although the term is used loosely because people tend
to incorrectly self diagnose their sadness as depression, it is actually defined as a common and
serious medical illness that negatively affects how one feels and the way he or she thinks and acts.
(Parekh). In most cases, depression is accompanied with a type of anxietydisorder such as as
generalized anxiety disorderand social anxiety (Facts). The cause of them occurring at the same time
is unknown, but scientists believe that it is caused by a malfunction of brain chemistry. Generalized
anxiety, the leading mental illness that affects over 40 million... Show more content on

Although interactions may be limited, they are beneficial to a depressed person (Hagerty).
Social relationships with close friends have proved to help lower depression rates and even make
it less severe. Relationships are extremely beneficial to depression because they often help
prevent severe depression or even overcome it over time. Relationships boost confidence from
their partner and provide them with the idea that they are not alone. It has been proven that those
who do not have depression also tend to relate more with those that do have it because non
depressed people tend to have a more positive outlook on life and tend to be more giving and
understanding. Overall, if a depressed person allows for it, relationships and social support have
only proved to benefit people who are
Analysis Of Martin Luther s The Reformer
As a young student previous to this year I have not had much experience studying Martin Luther
the reformer. However, I found this book to be very helpful to study the history of Luther. The
author James M. Kittleson states on page fourteen The primary purpose of this book is to tell the
story of Martin Luther to readers who are not specialists in the field of Luther studies and who
have no desire to become ensnared in the arguments of specialists. That is exactly what the book
does, it felt as if it was directed at a student such as myself, who has little to no knowledge of
Luther, and told not only of his personality traits but his life career. Kittleson starts the reader off
before Luther is born and takes him through his life s career all the way to Luther s death. One
thing that I found interesting in the book was rather than start with Luther when he began to study
theology, he began before Luther was even born discussing the life of Luther s father. Luther was
born as a peasant to Hans and Margaretta Luder, the author says Luther s birth was a matter of such
insignificance that he and his friends later debated the exact year, (pg.31) meaning that not even
Luther himself knew when he was born because it was so unimportant. Luther s father, Hans, was a
very successful and loyal father who played a heavy influence on his son s early life. Hans was a
devoted man, the morning Luther was born Hans rushed him to the Church of St. Peters to have him
baptized. Shortly
Donovan Hill s Queensland State Library
This essay will discuss Donovan Hill s Queensland State Library; it s relationship to their
architectural style and its involvement with the community by using diagrams and discussion.
Donovan Hill is a Brisbane based firm established in 1992. Their style highlights the value in
creating smaller individual experiences throughout the spatial programming whilst also not being
governed by climate but using it to their advantage. Donovan Hill is well known for their design of
the outdoor room in C House and this design is precedent for spaces in the QueenslandState Library.
Donovan Hill follows the International Style and address the three principals outlined by Hitchcock
and Johnson in their book The International Style. They find balance... Show more content on

Funded by the Queensland State Government with a budget of 76 million dollars the library was
designed in conjunction with Peddle Thorp, in 2007 it won five RAIA awards; the Sir Zelman
Cohen award for public architecture (national), the Emily Soderston award for interior architecture
(national), the FDG Stanley award for Public Buildings(QLD), Regional Building of the
year(Brisbane) and a regional commendation for public architecture. The original building on the
site 10,000sqm, this space was completely redesigned and then an additional 12,000sqm was added
to the structure. The briefing and design process spanned a large and complex client group
incorporating community and indigenous consultation. Donovan Hill needed to design a structure
with a multitude of uses, this culminating in over 1000 individual spaces throughout the building.
Aside from the main use of storing the library s permanent collection, Donovan Hill had to create
an Indigenous Resource Centre, flexible rooms for a variety of private and public events; [the
building required] a broad array of new specialist components including: an Indigenous Knowledge
Centre, climate controlled repositories, 300 seat auditorium, international standard exhibition
gallery, cafés, business/conference centre and an informal peoples gallery. They needed to create a
habitable learning hub for a broad range of people, including students, the elderly and people from a
broad range of cultures. The library needed to
The Importance of the Zollverein in the Movement for...
Formation the German Confederation created by the Congress of Vienna had 39 states, each having
its dues and tolls on goods passim through its territory. This made goods expensive and hindered
trade. For instance, Prussia had 67 different tariff areas within its border after 1815. As such,
Germany was economically and commercially the most backward country in western Europe in the
early years of the 19th century.

Purssia took the lead to promote free trade movement in the German Confederation. By the 1818
Tariff Reform Act, Prussia removed all customs barriers on trade within her boundaries, making the
country for the first time an economic and commercial unit. At the same time, she imposed a
uniform tariff on goods from other states ... Show more content on [Link] ...
Moreover, the clash of interests was to be forgotten in the face of the considerable advantages
offered by the formation of the Zollverein. A feeling of solidarity and the idea of a single fatherland
assumed a concrete form for the Germans. In this way, the quiet, but incessant, pressure of economic
forces broke down the political barriers which divided Germany.

In the words of a contemporary, Dr. Bowring who commented in 1840 as follows: The Zollverein
had brought the sentiment of German nationality out of the regions of hope and fancy into those of
positive and material interests. The general feeling is that it is the first step towards what is called
the Germanization of the people. It has broken down some of the strongest holds of alienation and
hostility. By a community of interests on commercial and trading questions it has prepared the way
for a political nationality.

Strengthened Prussian leadership with the help of the Zollverein, Prussia became economically
supreme in the German Confederation.

The 1818 Tariff Act and subsequent trade agreements stimulated Prussian trade and economic
development. As the Zollverein gradually extended the area of free trade within its boundaries,
Prussian economy prospered. In 1848 the Bank of Prussia was founded to assist economic growth.
It was managed by government officials, the shareholders in the Bank were allowed no say in its
control.
German industrialization made its fastest progress in the
Meaning Of Proverbs
Each and every proverb has its own meaning and can only be used in particular situations, many
times, the meaning of a proverb is not obvious and this is why knowing all necessary information
about isabout is of the utmost importance. Using proverbs in text or in speech incorrectly may cause
misunderstandings and confusion.
Norick (1985) marks two levels of comprehension: literal and figurative (implied). The former
relates more to proverbs that can be understood on literal level, e.g. Like mother, like daughter
(Oxford Dictionary of Proverbs 2004), the literal meaning of this proverb is mother and daughter are
alike , there is nothing metaphorical in it and it is understood literally, the letter, however, is more
sophisticated when it ... Show more content on [Link] ...
Mieder (2014) claims that proverbs are irreplaceable tools in teaching children moral behaviours,
experience and general wisdom. However, not every proverb has its didactic function, and one
should be careful while selecting them in order to teach others (Norrick 1985). Proverbs can be
also used to teach foreign languages by translating exercises and at the same time pupils can learn
about specific culture, heritage and moral precepts (Mieder op. cit.). Worth mentioning is the fact
that proverb can have direct and indirect didactic tendency. Nevertheless, all proverbs can be
considered as a didactic tool in particular context (Norrick op. cit.). In conclusion, it is commonly
known that proverbs are good sources of wisdom and experience that can be also transmitted into
other purposes, for example learning foreign languages or teaching about human nature (Mieder op.
