Banning The Freedom Of The Press
Although some may consider these books controversial or inappropriate, many English classes
have required us to read these books. Like the teachers that assigned us these books, I believe that
even controversial books can ultimately boost, not deter, our educational wealth. I oppose book
banning for three main reasons. First, I believe that education should be open to everyone.
Everyone should have an opportunity to read any literature of their choosing and form his or her
own opinions based on the reading. Micah Issitt lists three basic rights covered under the freedom of
the press: the right to publish, the right to confidentiality of sources, and the right of citizens to
access the products of the press. My second reason specifically addresses the last right stating that
citizens should have access to the press. The governmentshould not restrict books from being
published or interfere into personal affairs as this is an infringement of the First Amendment. Finally,
I believe that parents should monitor what their own children read, but not have the authority to ban
other children from reading these novels. For these reasons, I conclude that the government should
play no role in the issue what citizens do and do not read, and that book restriction should remain a
solely private matter. hile I agree that parents should play an active role in educating their children
and as their primary guardians, have the legal right to monitor what their children read, I disagree that
Strike Action Memo
The purpose of this memo is to inform CTN service providers about potential labour and possible
strike action at Barrie Common Roof (165 Ferris Lane) and Orillia Common Roof (169 Front
Street South) between New Path Youth and Family Services and their OPSEU staff. Labour
negotiations between New Path and their OPSEU staff have been ongoing and unionized staff
may be in a lawful strike position effective Friday, July 14th at 12:01 am. Last week, and earlier
this week, OPSEU members representing New Path staff held information pickets as people left
the Common Roof locations in Barrie and Orillia. If New Path unionized staff go on strike effective
Friday morning, picket action is likely to occur at both Common Roof locations. It is hoped... Show

Providers are asked to notify clients of the potential of strike action at these sites and advise them
to allow for extra time in arriving for appointments. If delays become extensive or problematic for
efficient access to services at these sites, providers may wish to arrange for service provision
offsite including providing services in the client s home where possible. Anyone in a position to
cross picket lines should also keep the following in mind: Please do not take sides in the
negotiations and respect everyone s inherent right to demonstrate within reason. Picket lines can
be lawfully established on public property (roads, sidewalks, etc.). Be courteous and respectful to
picketers. Use your car to cross picket lines. Do not opt to park somewhere else and walk across
the picket line. Chose either to listen to information that picketers may want to share with staff or
visitors or simply close the car window if you prefer not to listen. Expect delays and be patient.
Do not try to drive through or be rude to picketers. Calling the police because of nuisance is not an
option. Police should only be contacted in the unlikely event of violence. Make your way past the
picket line cautiously and not force your way
Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) Essay
Youth crime is a growing epidemic that affects most teenagers at one point in their life. There is no
question in society to whether or not youths are committing crimes. It has been shown that since
1986 to 1998 violent crime committed by youth jumped approximately 120% (CITE). The most
controversial debate in Canadian history would have to be about the Young Offenders Act(YOA). In
1982, Parliament passed the Young Offenders Act (YOA). Effective since 1984, the Young
Offenders Act replaced the most recent version of the Juvenile Delinquents Act (JDA). The Young
Offenders Act s purpose was to shift from a social welfare approach to making youth take
responsibility for their actions. It also addressed concerns that the paternalistic... Show more content

Youth crime is a tough issue, with many differing opinions. Punishment and rehabilitation, one, the
other, or both, all topics of debate within society. If you were to discuss the issues with the parents
of a victim, it would be understandable that their opinions would differ greatly than those of the
parents of the offender. Many people have formed an opinion without an in depth look at the act.
Others simply do not care.

The question that needs to be answered is, does the Youth Criminal Justice Act in Canada properly
address the victims rights, the rights and needs of the young offender, and does it protect public
safety? That question is hard to answer, as some people think that the Act is a more decent and
humane way to approach young persons in trouble with the law. On the other hand others feel it
offers too much protection to those whom least deserve it the young offenders, and very little to
those who deserve it the victims. The Youth Criminal Justice Act should concentrate on making
young offenders aware that they will be held responsible and accountable for their behaviour.

Today, despite the fact that youth crime rates

Jackie Robinson Turning Points
Can turning points in a single person s life change a whole society? A turning point can be
described as a life changing event that teaches someone about themselves or the world around
them. People who endure a life changing event can respond positively or negatively. In the
autobiography, I Never had it Made by Jackie Robinson, the memoir Warriors Don t Cry by Melba
Pattillo Beals, and the article The Father of Chinese Aviation , by Rebecca Maksel, each of the
individuals faced turning points. Jackie Robinson Melba Pattillo Beals and Feng Ru faced life
changing experiences that altered both their lives and their countries.

He was challenged by events along the way, such as multiple broken planes, burning of his shack,
and relocation. In paragraph six San Francisco s earthquake caused him to relocate. and in
paragraph seven plunged into his workshop setting it ablaze . Because of these events, Feng Ru
was challenged and throughout his journey to become one of the pioneers of Chinese aviation.
These events caused Feng Ru to grow into the first aviator to fly off Chinese soil and become
knowledgeable in aviation. For example, in paragraph six Rarely finished work before 3 A.M.
From this, I can infer he was determined to become the first aviator in China and nothing was going
to stop him. Throughout his journey to become the first aviator in China his reactions impacted his
country by inspiring China s space program and brought industrialization and aviation to China. For
example, in paragraph thirteen the text states the words Chinese Aviation Pioneer were engraved
upon Feng s tombstone. To sum up, these are ways Feng Ru faced a life changing experience just
as Jackie Robinson and Melba Patillo Beals
A Comparison Between A Public High School and a Private...
For my field work project, I chose to do an observation of a public high school and a private high
school. The schools I decided to observe were County Public High School and The Pickard School,
both of which are located in demographically similar neighborhoods. The purpose for choosing two
schools with similar characteristics was to have schools with equal social and economical factors
encompassing them. This, I felt would make my findings unbiased within the scope of the project.
My rationalefor choosingthis was to comparatively analyze the differences and similarities between
both of the schools, and also to see just how true the stereotype is that private schoolsare better than
public schools. My first visit was to the Pickard... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She said you can pick any student randomly when the bell rings and I or any other staff member
could tell you who they are, what grade they are in, what their family life is like, what their strong
qualities are as well as what their week qualities are and how well their grades are. Because of the
abundance of students in public schools, this type of control is virtually impossible. This
particular type of control to me also allows for a holistic approach to education which I will later
discuss. She also explained that in her school there is more control over the lesson plans than
there are in public school. For instance, if there is something major going on in the media that
they feel is important, the teacher will discuss it with the class. The teacher has more freedom to
deviate from the planned lesson. In a public school teachers are not given this type of freedom
because their curriculum is regimented. Another important area of regulation, one which I never
thought of before was the control of hiring and firing teachers. If a teacher is not doing that great
of a job and is not getting through to the students, they let the teacher go. This is not as easy to
accomplish in public schools. The teachers in this school are also given performance related raises
unlike public school where their are standard salaries for teachers at certain levels. Performance is
not valued in the public school pay scale she explained. I found this to be very interesting, because
The Warren Court And The Supreme Court
In 1953, Chief Justice Earl Warren ascended to the Supreme Court after the death of former Chief
Justice Fred M. Vinson. Chief Justice Warren led the Supreme Court, most notably during the
1960s, which were already a time of great social and governmental change. He, along with the rest
of the justices on his court, helped to shape both the both the court and the country during this
time in dramatic and long lasting ways. The Warren Court took place during a period of rapid
change in American history, leading it to produce many impactful decisions that influenced the
course of federal and state laws for decades, as it took a judicial activist stance on how it
approached decision making in cases regarding civil rights, the right to privacy, criminal due
process, voting rights and election law, as well as the first amendment. The Warren Court led the
judicial system in the United States for sixteen years, with 17 justices total, although its most
impactful version existed between 1962 and 1969. The court heard and ruled upon 197 cases in
total during its tenure, many of which dramatically shaped or created legal precedent. This court is
best known for its expansive federal control at what was seen as at the expense of states rights and
its heavy judicial activism, enhancing the Bill of Rights. Chief Justice Earl Warren, in his control
over the court, tried his best to make sure to limit the arguments that the public might have by
making sure that the decisions were as close
Reflection Paper On Inequality
The lecture presented in class (Inequality in Education and Employment) was a particularly salient
topic for me. As part of my Bachelor s degree, in Philosophy, I was required to present and defend
a thesis. My thesis was a defense of democracy from the problems of distributive justice. Over the
course of two years, I spent countless hours reading, writing, and debating the fine points on
inequality. Therefore, the subject matter is not something new for me, nor do I think there is a
simple solution.
Reflecting on the information from the lecture, there were various aspects of inequality that
coincided with my research; however, there were two areas that I thought required further
consideration and contemplation. First, nowhere in the slides, in the lecture, nor in the discussions,
was justice mentioned. I find that particularly odd as the preliminary point of any inquiry into
inequality should start from the structural foundations of equality viz., justice.
Second, I was slightly confused by the slide (23) titled Workers with Disabilities Earn Less Than
Their Peers . The slide indicated that people with disabilities (PWDs) earned 37% less pay than
people without disabilities (PWODs). While I looked at the slide s bar graph, I could visually see
that the 37% figure did not match what was on the graph. This forced me to do some quick math on
what was represented. According to the values on the slide, the actual wage gap was 21%. While
this is still significant, it is not

The Election Day Fast Approaches
In a democratic society, it is vital for citizens to participate in the electoral process and chose their
desired leader. As Election Day fast approaches, many Canadians are faced with the challenge of
who to vote for and in order to have a meaningful voice, it is essential for Canadians to acquire an
adequate understanding of the major parties platforms. Among the major parties are Steven Harper
s Conservative Party, Justin Trudeau s Liberal Party and Tom Mulcair s New Democratic Party and
each have a unique plan to help Canadaprosper. In my selected article, Mark Kennedy highlights key
issues in each party s platform including taxation, balancing the budget and views on the niqab. From
the competing platforms, it is evident that the Liberals have a stronger plan than their fellow parties.
One major area of focus in this election is taxation and each party has a unique way to lower taxes
for Canadians. The Conservative s are assuring lower taxes for Canadians while also providing tax
breaks such as universal child care benefits, income splitting for families, higher contribution limits
for Tax free Savings Accounts, and a home renovation tax credit (Kennedy). Although the assistance
these tax breaks offer some Canadians is undeniable, the author of the article fails to mention the
costs at which these benefits are received. For instance, the income splitting tax benefit being
implanted by the Conservatives is predicted to cost 2.2 billion dollars this year while
Analysis Of Daniel Handler s A Series Of Unfortunate Events
Most authors tend to write their books in a cheerful way. Daniel Handler, on the other hand, writes
in a gloomy style, showing the not so nice things that can happen to people. For example, the three
Baudelaire orphans in A Series of Unfortunate Events. Siblings who just lose their parents in a
deadly house fire and have to deal with the trouble known as Count Olaf, a villain after their
enormous inheritance. Handler wrote the 13 books in the series under the pseudonym Lemony
Snicket. A Series of Unfortunate Eventsis Handler s best known work. In the last book of the series,
the three Baudelaires are in the middle of the ocean on a boat after leaving a burning hotel where
they worked undercover. Unfortunately, the children are accompanied by Count Olaf, the man after
their money. And the Baudelaire fortune is finally mine! Olaf cackled Finally, I am a very wealthy
man, which means everybody must do what I say! Was Olaf s reaction to their predicament even
though his statement is completely false. Snicket made Count Olaf the antagonist in the story, a
manipulative villain where in his mind money equals power. He lives in his own fairytale where he
is superior. To make the Baudelaires situation worse, a storm is added to the mix showing that the
kids can never get a break, pushing their intelligence and strength. The storm led the Baudelaires and
Olaf to an island of strange customs. But the Baudelaires could not help but feel that they were
abandoning their previous
How Did The Mali Empire Influence West African Culture
Mali

During the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the Mali Empire commanded West Africa. This group
particularly took charge of the savanna. Merchants of the Mali Empire were associated through
religious ties. These connections were tied to wealthy Islamic royalty that were located in North
Africa and the Middle East. These merchants carried materials such as brass, copper, spices, and
many other items. The Savanna was a very affluent place because of the constant trade between
areas. When gold was declared standard currency, demand for slaves increased. Eventually, a new
ruler arose and the Songhay Empire began their domination of the previously Mali owned lands.

Kongo

The Kongo region was a powerful kingdom in Africa. This area was also very centralized. In West
Africa, rulers had many different types of political powers. These emperors held a kind of semi
god like status. Lower rulers of smaller kingdoms had to depend very largely on their abilities to
conform and persuade. Similar to Native Americans, West Africans lived in tightly nit chains of
responsibility among family/friends. This responsibility was spread across everyone in the clan.
This included aunts, parents, uncles, and even people who only shared clan ties. These traditional
bonds would later help ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These came from Europe, Africa, and the Americas. After 1492, when Columbus arrived in
America, colossal amounts of Native Americans fell sick. They eventually died because they had no
resistance to African and European diseases. The deadly smallpox virus wiped Native American
villages because of its rapid spread, and for several years it killed the helpless communities. The
biological aspect of the Eastern and Western Hemispheres had a tremendous impact on the lives of
others, as well. Sixteenth century Europeans also acquainted horses, sheep, cattle, chickens, swine,
wheat, and numerous other items to
Michael Ende s The Neverending Story
Translated into 35 different languages and adapted into a 1984 Hollywood classic, Michael Ende
s The Neverending Story (1979) enjoys a cult following worldwide. The book deeply influenced
young adult fantasy fiction in Germany by its story of a timid, overweight boy whose becomes a
hero by being an avid reader and a maker of stories. The Neverending Storyis descendent of the
Romantic Movement; a protagonist as a reader who travels between reality and fantasy and
awakens his inner poet. Two decades later, two critically acclaimed books took and transformed
Ende s story: Inkheart (2003) by Cornelia Funke and The City of Dreaming Books (2006) by
Walter Moers. These three books describe a conflict between a reader and book hating antagonists

The Battle of Normandy
The Battle of Normandy WWII was a very brutal war, but The Battle of Normandy changed it for
us. This was the turning point in the war. To prepare for this fight the Allies decided to increase
the air strikes and bombings to slow down the German army, who had been trying to take over
France at the time. This battle was set for June 5th, but actually took place on June 6, 1944 at
exactly 6:30 a.m, when the weather was supposed to be the calmest, and ended on June 30, 1944.
The Allies wanted to end Hitler s dream of Nazi denomination (www.dday.org). This invasion is
known as one of the largest and amphibious military assaults in history and required extensive
planning. (www.history.com). The Allies decided that they wanted to trick the Germans into
thinking that they were going to land somewhere else north of Normandy, which made it a
surprise attack. Hitler decided to put his troops more up North because that s where he believed
the Allies were going to land. Not only were the beaches raided, but concentration camps as well.
Led by the US Army General Dwight D. Eisenhowet, the infantries landed and mainly targeted a
50 mile stretch of Normandy. The Americans landed at Utah and Omaha. The Canadians and
British headed for Gold, Juno, and Sword. The army consisted of 50,000 vehicles, 6,000 ships, and
11,000 planes. Paratroopers and gliders had already landed behind end behind enemy lines, previous
the battle to prepare for what was going to come and to destroy the main parts
Human Caused Environmental Impacts On Beijing

As the exploration of the industrial development and increased speed of the urban sprawl in Beijing,
many severe environmental issues attribute mainly to the anthropocentric activities have been come
out of the scene. One of them is the air pollution. Air pollution has been regarded as the most severe
environment issue in China since it has already threatened to physical health, especially for the
respiratory tract and lung. In January 2013, Beijing experienced historical heavy air pollution. In
this particular month, very few days were observed with blue sky. (Lijian Han et.al., 2015)
According to the analysis of the driving factors, the population grew fast, and energy consumption
and the number of vehicles increased rapidly (Ju Zhang et.al., 2010), these factors add together can
make the air quality worse than any one of them separately can. Firstly, it has been an undoubted
truth that more and more people originally lived in rural has been moved to core urban of Beijing
since there are more opportunities in there. Therefore, the huge explosion of urban population with
more energy release and more CO2 exhalation is seen as an inevitably primary factor causing the
bad air quality. What s more, as the population
