Read the following text and answer questions number 4 and 5.

Annual rings are concentric circles that can be seen in cross section of woody stems as result of secondary
growth. In rainy season, there was abundant of water and minerals so that the growth is rapid. The cells are
lighter because the cells absorb a lot of water, so that the ring is wider. In dry season, the ring is darker because
the cells are small. Therefore, annual ring is consist of 2 colors, which are dark and light that counted as one
year. Annual rings are used to calculate the Dendro-Chronology (age of trees), and their thickness provides
information about the environment (Paleo-Climatology).

B. annual rings are the result of lateral meristem activity which makes the stem growing wider.
C. the more the number of the annual rings, the older the age of plant because the meristem apical works
more active.
D. in the rainy season, the plant grows taller because abundant water in the enviroment support the
secondary growth

Read the following text and answer question number 7 and 8.

Transpiration is the process of releasing water in the form of water vapor mainly through the stomata. This
process also happens in other part of the plant, such as lenticels, but it was just a little portion compared to the
stomata. Transpiration is the important process to maintain the balance of body fluid (turgor pressure); allow the
absorption and transportation of water and minerals throughout the plant body; and control the temperature of
the plant.
There are several factors that affect the rate of transpiration. Internal factors such as the size or area of leaves,
the thickness of leaves, the presence of cuticle and the number of stomata. External factors such as humidity,
air temperature, light intensity and wind velocity.
This following figure is one of an experiment to prove that transpiration occurs in plant:

Note: V is the volume of water.

Result of experiment is shown by the table below.

Volume of water
Plant Time spent
Before After
W 200 ml 190 ml 24 hours
X 200 ml 180 ml 24 hours
Y 200 ml 175 ml 24 hours
Z 200 ml 160 ml 24 hours

7. The fastest rate of transpiration occurs in plant indicated by letter….

A. W
B. X
C. Y
D. Z

8. Which of the following statement is a correct conclusion of the experiment?

A. Transpiration doesn’t occur in plant W because the volume of water doesn’t change after 24 hours
B. In 24 hours, the rate of transpiration decreases compared with initial condition
C. Plant X and Y have relatively wider and thinner leaves than plant Z
D. Number of leaves affects the rate of transpiration in plants

Read the following article and answer question no. 9 and 10.
Rain tree or Samanea saman is a type of big, tall, wide
branch and leafy plant. The name rain tree came from the
water droplets from the tips of leaves that occurs at night
or in the early morning when the humidity is high.
This phenomenon is called guttation caused by high of
water and minerals uptake that initiated by high root
pressure but the rate of transpiration is low so that excess
water and minerals is removed through pores on the tip
and along the edge of the leaf called hydathode.

9. The correct statement regarding the article above is……

A. high root pressure caused water vapor released through hydathode
B. high amount of water and mineral push the water loss along the edge of the leaf
C. high temperature forced the water droplets along the edge and on the tip of the leaf
D. high environmental humidity increased the forced out of water vapor and minerals through stomata

10. The correct part of plant tissue that plays role in guttation based on the article is ….
A. stomata because it has important role in evaporation and gas exchange
B. xylem because it has function to transport water and minerals to stem and leaves
C. epidermis because it has important role to increase the rate of transpiration in plant
D. phloem because it plays role to transport the result of photosynthesis to all parts of plant body

11. See the diagram and function of flower below.

Read the text below and answer questions number 12 and 13.
Transportation in plant is the movement of substances that passing through vascular system start from one part
to other part of plant body. In water transportation, the plant absorbs water and minerals from soil to be drawn
to the leaves. The vertical movement of water and dissolved substances through vascular tissue occurs because
of the root pressure pushes water up, capillarity in stem draws water up within the vascular tissue and
transpiration create the tension in leaves to pull the water in the vascular tissue.

A group of students doing an experiment to prove the process of transportation in plant using celery. The
following diagram shows the experimental design.

12. Which of the following is the correct prediction of the result?

A. The leaf and stem of plant X will turn into red
B. The stem of plant Y will not turn into blue because it does not have leaf
C. The colored solution in plant X and Y will be transported through phloem
D. Plant X and Y will not change the color because there is no water transportation

13. The correct statement regarding the rate of transportation in plants X and Y is…...
A. the rate of water transportation in plant Y is faster than X because it only occurs in the stem
B. the rate of transportation in plants in X and Y will be the same because it uses the same type of plant
C. the volume of remaining solution in glass X will be more than glass Y because the transpiration rate in Y
is faster than X
D. the rate of water transportation in plant X is faster than Y because the pulling force of transpiration in the
leaf will accelerate the rate of transportation
