Rate and Speed

What is a Rate?

Top speed →
44.72 km/h

Speed is most commonly measured in

kilometres per hour, or km/h in short. The
speedometer in a vehicle shows the speed
Average speed
→ 20 km/s
of the vehicle in km/h! 80 km/h

Almost the whole entire topic

can be summarised using this
Average speed
triangle! → 0.047 km/h
Where
d = distance
S = speed
t = time

What is a Rate?

The other common rate we learn

in primary school is the rate of
water flowing out from a tap, into
a tank. It can be measured in
litres per minute, ℓ/min.

To convert a rate, convert one quantity at a

time. For example:

When converting km/h to m/min,

60 km/h = 60 000 m/h (change km to m first)
60 000 m/h = 1000 m/min (then change hours to
minutes)

What is a Rate?

The volume of a tank that is a cuboid is:

Volume = Length × Breadth × Height

height

breadth
length

The formula can also be written as:

Volume = Base Area × Height

Therefore, how fast the water level in a tank rises

depends on 2 factors, the base area and the rate
of water flowing into the tank

The greater the base area, the slower the water

level rises as water must be spread over a larger
area.

Unlike other units of measurement, time can

be expressed in fractions. This is because 60
1
minutes make up an hour, so 3 hour jus
means 20 minutes. Expressing time as a
fraction of an hour makes your calculations a
lot easier.
