10 Basic Sentence Patterns in English

Mastering Sentence Structure


for Clear Communication
Pattern 1 – Subject + Verb (SV)

Structure: Subject + Verb


Examples:
• Birds sing.
• He runs.
• They swim.
• Dogs bark.
• She laughs.
Pattern 2 – Subject + Verb + Object (SVO)

Structure: Subject + Verb + Object


Examples:
• She writes a letter.
• I read a novel.
• They play football.
• He drinks water.
• We watch movies.
Pattern 3 – Subject + Verb + Complement (SVC)

Structure: Subject + Verb + Subject Complement


Examples:
• She is a doctor.
• The cake smells good.
• He became a pilot.
• The kids seem happy.
• It looks perfect.
Pattern 4 – Subject + Verb + Adverbial (SVA)

Structure: Subject + Verb + Adverbial


Examples:
• He works at night.

Direct Object (SVOO)

Complement (SVOC)

Pattern 7 – Subject + Verb + Object + Adverbial
(SVOA)

Structure: Subject + Verb + Object + Adverbial

Pattern 8 – There + Verb + Subject

Structure: There + Verb + Subject

Pattern 9 – Interrogative Sentence (Question
Pattern)

Structure: Helping Verb + Subject + Main Verb...?


Examples:
• Do you like music?
• Are they coming?
• Did she call you?
• Can he swim?
• Is it raining?
Pattern 10 – Imperative Sentence (Command)

Structure: Base Verb (Subject understood)


Examples:
• Sit down.
• Please open the window.
• Be careful.
• Don’t talk.
• Help me, please.
