MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD

Online Learning Module

Overview: This module focuses on the nature of mathematics that includes patterns,
sequences, and regularities in the world, how mathematics comes into play, both in
nature and in human endeavors. Students will be provided a separate discussion
materials with exercises to support effective learning. The following details below are
their tasks for the first module of the quarter.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end this module the students are able to:
1. identify the patterns and regularities in the world;
2. solve patterns and sequences that are evident in nature; and
3. appreciate the importance of math in nature and the world.

Task 1

Based on the film, write an essay about “Is Mathematics an Invention or a

Discovery?”. You may choose one side and add support on your opinion. You may
also create your own title.
The essay must be more than 10 sentences.

You will be graded by this rubric:

Task 2 – Patterns and Numbers in Nature and the World (Group Activity)

Activity instructions:
1. The class will be divided into 5 groups. Each member will be receiving an email that
includes his/her group number. This will be selected randomly and you have to find your
group mates in the group chat.

2. Find some objects or living things in your surrounding that you think shows amazing
or extraordinary patterns or sequences in nature.

3. Take a picture or video of those objects and compile those in one video presentation.

4. The video presentation must include the following:

a. pictures or videos of the objects that you captured;
b. description of each photo/video that includes name, characteristics, and its
connection or similarities to the film you watched before (Science Documentary: The
Math Mystery) or on the discussion of the topic mentioned in the posted material;
c. add proof/documentation that the objects are from your place; and
d. include references, if any.

5. The duration of the video must not be more than 3 minutes.

6. Your output will be graded with the rubric below: (20 points in total)
