Past Continuous.
We use the Past Continuous to talk about an action that happened in a very specific time in the
past. We combine the past simple with the verb in continuous form to create it.
● Ex: Present Continuous:
I am watching tv. Jo estic mirant la tele.
● Ex: Past Continuous:
I was watching tv. Jo estava mirant la tele.
To be able to form correctly the Past Continuous you must already know, the present simple
and continuous and the past simple, as well as the verb to be in these forms.
● I am watching tv = Present continuous I was watching tv = Past Continuous
1. I = pronoun / subject of the sentence.
2. am =verb to be Present. Was = verb to be in Past
3. watching = verb in continuous form (…ing)
4. tv = object of the sentence.
Other examples:
● I was speaking English.
● You were listening to music.
● He was shouting in class.
● She was listening to the teacher.
● It was jumping around.
● We were playing videogames.
● They were talking out loud.
Past Continuous negative.
● I wasn’t listening in class.
1. I = pronoun/ subject.
2. Wasn’t = verb to be in a negative (was not) form.
3. Listening = verb in continuous form (…ing)
4. in = preposition
5. class = object.
Examples:
● I wasn’t listening.
● You weren’t doing your job.
● He wasn’t paying attention.
● She wasn’t singing in class.
● It wasn’t running around.
● We weren’t having fun.
● They weren’t shouting at each other.
Past Continuous Interrogative.
● Were you listening?
1. Were = auxiliar, verb to be in interrogative (always the first word of the sentence)
2. you = pronoun / subject
3. listening = verb in continuous form (…ing)
4. ? = interrogative sign (must use this to ask a question)
Examples:
● Was I speaking to loud? Yes I was/ No I wasn’t
● Were you talking?
● Was he listening to the teacher? Yes he was7 No he wasn’t.
● Was she being happy at that moment? Yes she was/ No she wasn’t.
● Was It having fun?
● Were we enjoying the music?
● Were they running around in class?
