Lesson

1 Basic Web Concepts

Lesson Overview

“Necessity is the mother of all inventions” – a famous proverb quoted by well-

known historical and literary figures like Plato, Aesop and Victor Hugo. This quote is
relevantly true and still manifests today. Technology advanced because of the
people’s need for convenience. From farms and mills, industries to home appliances
and personal gadgets, the technological development is very much noticeable. Man,
as a social being, also has his need to information and communication. While
telephone and telegraphs were invented, there are still demands for advancement.
This was made possible through the world’s largest network – the Internet.

Web Design Terminologies

Network – is defined as several computers connected together with purpose of sharing

resources including data, information and Hardware.

Internet – is a worldwide collection of computers interconnected to one another either

wired or wireless including all computers that we use at home, in school, offices and
many other places.

World Wide Web (WWW) – is a collection of resources and information interconnected

via the internet.

Web Page – is a formatted page within a web site that may contain text, graphics,
video and multimedia. This page can be viewed and explored on the internet by the
use of a program called web browser.

Home page – is usually the first web page of a web site which usually provides
information about the web site, its purpose and contents.

Splash Page – may precede the home page. It usually contains a multimedia which is
designed to be attractive and intriguing in order to create curiosity and invite anyone
to see its contents.

5
Accessing the Web

Dial-Up Connection - is connecting to the internet using the telephone lines. The
method of connection is done like making a call over the telephone line with the aid of
modem (modulator-demodulator). One disadvantage of this type is the slow data
transmission and the telephone could not be utilized for voice communication while
connected to the internet.

DSL- or digital subscriber line is also a method of

connecting to the internet using the telephone line but
provides both data and voice communication. DSL
data transmission is several times faster and is more
reliable compared to the dial-up connection.

Cable Internet – is online connection to the web by the

use of cable lines already used by the cable television
(TV) providers. Cable lines can carry TV and data
signals faster since they are dedicated line originally
intended for TV. They can transmit data at a faster rate
and are available immediately to home and office
users with existing cable TV services.

Wireless internet – is internet connection provided by

wireless service providers (WSP) wherein wireless
enabled computers and gadgets can access to. This
service is very convenient since you can access the
internet anywhere as long as the area has a wireless
signal just like the ones used by cellular phone
providers.

Web Browsers

A website must be tested and viewed using the browsers that are commonly
used by users worldwide that way you will be assured that your website will work in
the majority of available browsers. This test is important because not all browsers treat
some codes the same way. Each browser has its own set of default setting for fonts,
background color and so on and the user may also want to modify these settings to
their particular needs or viewing preferences.

A web browser is a software application for

retrieving, presenting and traversing information
resources on the World Wide Web.

6
An information resource is identified by a Uniform Resource Identifier/Location
(URI/URL) that may be a webpage, image, video or other piece of content.

Hyperlinks present in resources enable users easily to navigate their browsers to

related resources.

Web Browser Elements

Name Function
Home button Usually represented by a house icon to return to
the user’s home page
Address bar To input the Uniform Resource Identifier (URI)
also known as Uniform Resource Location (URL)
Back and forward As represented by left and right arrows, to go back
buttons to the previous page and forward to the next
Refresh or reload button To reload the current page
Stop button To cancel loading the current page
Search bar As a means to type in topics and terms in a search
