Western Expansion In The Late Nineteenth Century
Following the western expansion in the late nineteenth century, the American society and economy
would experience significant growth and development amidst numerous challenges and benefits.
From this, the United States would grow in geographical size and in power. This expansion started
in 1860s and continued until the 1890s. Due to the discovery of gold in California, people wanted to
continue and search for more riches in the West. The benefits of the expansion were mainly for the
Americans because it helped the rise of industrialization and the United Stateseconomy. But the
consequences and the challnages that would occur would be the Native American Indians whom had
to be kicked out of their own home and land.
Economically the United States boomed tremendously mostly from the Pacific Railway Act of 1862
which provided federal subsidies in land and loans for the construction of transcontinental railroads
across the united states. It all started with the Central Pacific Company building from West to East
employing thousands of Chinese immigrants. In the opposite direction, the Union Pacific Company
began laying tracks from Iowa employing mostly Irish immigrants. Then in May 1869 the two
railroads met at Promontory Point, Utah and connected the two together creating the transcontinental
railroad with the golden ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since most of the towns in the United States had their own local time it made the scheduling very
confusing and difficult to follow. The fast traveling and the speed of the railroads made traveling
time decrease because it took less time to travel from city to city. So, the North American railroads
decided to come up with a new standardized time system called the Standard Railway Time for the
railroad operations to go smoothly and the scheduling of the different arrival and departure times
would not be as

Non formal education is one such pathway. Characterised by a high degree of flexibility and
openness to change and innovation in its organisation, pedagogy and delivery modes, nonformal
education caters to diverse and context specific learning needs of children, young people and adults
worldwide. Non Formal Learning is an inseparable part of life long learning. Types of non formal
education are; Professional and Vocational Training: Traditional Higher Educationmight remain
insufficient to response to the needs of labor market for instance in the Czech Republic, Poland,
Portugal, and Romania. Vocational Education and Training can play an important role to fill some of
the gap left by the traditional higher education institutions. A vocational education emphasises
practical experience, and most of it is completed in a practical training company such as a larger
industrial enterprise, a workshop, a kitchen or a shop
Non formal programmes of professional and vocational trainings generally organized by firms, trade
unions, private agencies and also formal schools are one of the most important providers of such
Living Off Of Minimum Wage
Living off of Minimum Wage in the United States
In Barbara Ehrenreich s documentary novel, Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By In America
(2001), she claimed that it is almost impossible to live off of minimum wage in the united states. She
supports her claim by writing a documentary novel explaining the details of the life of the American
struggles caused by the minimum wage. Through her book, she supports that minimum wage salary
is insufficient means of survival and leads to a difficult life. After encountering many people who
falsely accuse welfare receivers of being lazy and not work hard enough, she wrote a book to
challenge and change the public s negative opinion towards them and also about the day when the
minimum wage workforce will stand up for themselves and demand to have a higher wage.
Ehrenreich s purpose for writing this novel was to bring attention to wage workforce by showing the
general American public the life of their fellow citizens who are struggling to survive.
The main, primary theme that Nickel and Dimed focuses on is the hardship and distress caused by
the poverty in the United States. Ehrenreich s main concern regarding this theme is how it is
practically impossible to have basic necessities for survival with the amount of money earned from a
minimum wage salary. She grasps the reader s attention and proves her claims and arguments by
using a unique technique called investigative journalism, which allows her to get the first hand
experience
Cuneiform Script
Cuneiform Expression: The Language Before Letters The Cuneiform script, an early form of
language consisting of pictographic symbols, was first created by the Sumerians and later built on
by other cultures. Written on wet clay tablets, Cuneiform symbols were drawn with a long reed
crafted into a writing instrument, also known as a stylus. The stylus created wedge shapes, which is
why the name cuneiform was assigned to it. Cuneiform translates to wedge shaped . Some
Languages included in the Cuneiform classification were Sumerian, Akkadian, Elamite, Hittite,
Luwian, Hurrian, Hattic, and Urartian. Cuneiform was primarily used during the time period that
lasted between the 30th century BC to 1st century AD. The first symbol picture was... Show more

Among the many varieties stemming from the Mesopotamian cuneiform came Hittite, which was
named after the Hattusa kingdom in the Old Testament. The Hittites, a people centered in north
central Anatolia, developed their own customized language evolving from the ancient cuneiform.
This language was used mostly for writing secular text. Hittite contained many words that were
borrowed from other languages, such as the Hurrian and the Hattic, and was composed of a
primarily syllabic nature. The Hittite language was used from 1600 BC to 1100 BC, and it is
suspected that the language was still spoken after the Hittite empire collapsed. Hittite was the
earliest Indo European language, although some argue otherwise about its classification. Although
the cuneiform script includes other cultures and languages, these ones are significantly important
because they were widely used and they all basically started a very new way for particular cultures.
Communication is a very important part of our history of knowledge and culture. Along with new
communication comes new ideas, thoughts, technology, ways of living, and culture. We can even
see how our modern language today, much like these languages, evolved from much simpler
language into a process of communication we use on a daily
Lake Granby
Lake Granby
Lake Granby is located in the mountains of Colorado, near the town of Granby. The third largest
body of water in Colorado, it is at an elevation of 8,284 feet. In 1950 the Granby Dam was
completed, and is a part of the Colorado Big Thompson Project (CBT). The CBT provides a large
water resource for the Front Range. Along with being used to supply the Front Range with water, it
is also the headwaters of the Colorado River. Water levels in the lake are extremely important to
both the Front Range and the downstream users of the watershed. This is a unique situation for
water because the water that is used in the CBT has to cross the continental divide. There must also
be enough water that travels downstream due to water rights in, and outside the watershed. Proper
water management of the system at a lake wide scale is the most important sustainability issue for
the area. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Boats are very common on the lake, both for fishing and recreation. The lake is a popular to anglers
looking for kokanee salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) and lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush). Other fish
like rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and brown trout (Salmo trutta) are also abundant in the
lake. Mysis shrimp were introduced into the lake many years ago. They have had an impact on
the kokanee salmon and will be analyzed in the final paper. The fishing industry provides income
for the area, as well as jobs. As of recent, the populations of kokanee salmon and lake trout have
been in a decline. The interaction of human management on these fish populations is needed in
order to help increase these fish abundance in the lake. This issue is also linked to the management
of water in the lake because water levels impact the way that fish species

Comparative Analysis Paper
Patricia Silvestro
Date due: 04/07/11
Many people believe that previous generation of Americans was completely different than the
generation that lives now days. Ideology and interests have completely changed. For instance, we
all know that previous generation cared a lot for peace in the world, human rights and equality of
mankind. Martin Luther King, John. F. Kennedy and Malcolm X are people who fought for equality
among people and most famous representatives of Generation X. But compared to the previous
generation, my generation is completely different, and many people are having a debate whether it s
good or bad. Thomas Friedman in his essay Generation Q ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It s for all these reasons why the author calls them Generation Q the Quite Americans. Moreover,
Friedman tries to analyze and understand why current generation is so quiet and why they are
quietly pursuing their idealism. In his opinion, more and more people of Generation Q spend
time online, hiding behind computer screens and trying not to be social. There are no big and old
crusades like back in days. Instead of going to Washington D.C. and be against the Iraq war, the
generation Q writes comments in Internet, as a result, spends more and more time online. The
writer believes that generation Q must be doing itself a favor, and America a favor, if it demanded
answers and results from candidates to many issues the Greediest Generation is leaving them,
specifically, huge budget deficit, climate change and Social Security reform. And the author
concludes the essay by saying that Generation Q does not have enough courage to handle all those
problems the previous generation is leaving them. A week after the release of Generation Q , Rob
Fishman, Cornell University graduate, shares his opinion on Generation Q. In his essay, Generation
of Generation Q Fishman underlines the fact that our generation is complacent and there are excuses
for it (73). Technology had had a distinctively effect by encouraging us to look inward. In sports, for
example, technology had had

The Value Of Discipline And The Desire Of Wisdom
Chapter eight expands the concepts in chapter one and introduces the value of discipline and the
desire of wisdom. This is the second of Solomon s three poems. In these verses, wisdom is again
personified as a woman and makes her proclamation, heard from far and wide, and does not wait for
the audience to come to her. She represents herself as two nouns: Doth not wisdomcry? And
understanding put forth her voice? (8:1). Understanding is another word for wisdom. For knowledge
and understanding go hand in hand . The next few verses set up the setting in which wisdom
makes her speech: She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.
Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man (8:2 3). Waltke s commentary
elaborates on the position of her speech and explains that she speaks on the highest points, to be
visible and audible as possible . Wisdom stands by the way in the places of the path , in which
connotes where the masses walk on their way to choosing their lifestyle. This represents the point
at where they must decide to follow either wisdom or foolishness. Her location at the gates
implies that she is around a place where a lot of people gather on a daily basis, persuading them to
stay away from the wicked. Wisdom stands at the opening of the gates and Waltke expands on the
idea that here decisions are made and people enter into new situations and even embark on new
journeys. She proceeds to give insight and

Science is an astonishing, intellectual field; it teaches humans about life and allows them to alter
it in order to reap desirable results. The diligence and intellect of scientists who are able to rework
the human body has contributed to the sharing of many beautiful and tear jerking stories about
babies who have been born and patients who have survived. As technology and knowledge about
the body increases, people begin to question how much we should use our intelligence to change the
bodies that God has created. However, within the medical sphere, specifically with the process of
modifying genes, scientists should use their God given gift of intellect to control the evil, residing in
the form of diseases, that would otherwise destroy all... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Consequences Of The Legal Drinking Age
Legal drinking age is a constant occurrence in the United States, and it causes problems and heavy
consequences. There are opinions on rather the legal age should stay at twenty one or lower to
eighteen or nineteen. Lowering the MLDA (minimum legal drinking age) would be beneficial in
ways but also not so beneficial. First off, the consequences that an eighteen year old receives is the
same consequences that an twenty one year old would receive. For example, if someone is
eighteen and they get caught drinking with anyone younger than they are then they will get the
blame and the punishment for giving them alcohol, even if they did not. When someone turns
eighteen they are considered an adult, so they pay the consequences of an adult but can not do
what twenty one year olds could do, for example, drink alcohol. Being eighteen and being able to
buy adult toys and tobacco then you should be able to drink responsibly. Even though someone is
more matured at twenty one, if he is legal at eighteen to buy tobacco, purchase adult items but also
suffer more consequences. There are several laws and acts that make twenty one the legal minimum
drinking age. The 21st amendment revoked Prohibition in 1933, so many states made there MLDA
twenty one, even though the law varied for each state. In 1970 and 1975, there were twenty nine
states that lowered their MLDA to eighteen, nineteen or twenty due to the changing of the age to
vote. As they lowered the MLDA more traffic accidents occurred
