What is Action Research?
• AR refers to a wide variety of evaluative, investigative,
and analytical research methods designed to diagnose
problems or weaknesses- whether organizational,
academic, or instructional- and help educators develop
practical solutions.

(The Glossary of Educational Reform)

What is Action Research?
• AR is a process of systematic, reflective
inquiry to improve educational practices or
resolve problems in any operating unit (i.e.
school, classroom, office).

How is Action Research Done?

▪ Using a Cyclic or Spiral ▪ Continuously refining methods, data

Action Research Methods
Triangulation refers to the
use of multiple methods or
data sources in qualitative
research to develop a
comprehensive
understanding of
phenomena (Patton, 1999).
Action Research Methods
➢ One serious weakness of AR, as observed by Foster
(1999), is the lack of sufficient evidence to support
findings.
➢ Insufficient evidence can be addressed through the
TRIANGULATION of both quantitative and qualitative
data (collecting and analyzing data from different
perspectives).
➢ Lim (2007) emphasized that mixed methods research
design is most applicable in action research.

Types of Educational Action Research (EAR)
➢ Type 1 EAR: descriptive study
understanding what is
➢ Type 2 EAR: quasi-experimental study
testing implementation theories
➢ Type 3 EAR: a case study
evaluation of the impact of implemented change
➢ Type 4 EAR: mixed methods research
collection and analysis of both quantitative and
qualitative data
