Henry David Thoreau s Resistance To Civil Government
Have you ever thought that the government had too much power, and didn t have the right people
making the laws that everyone is expected to abide by? There are many people, including myself,
that feel like the leadership we have influencing us in government isn t quite up to par. Henry
David Thoreau was one of those people as well. Though Thoreau had different reasons for his
belief than most do today, such as the war with Mexico and slavery, his principles still stand strong
in my opinion. In Resistance to Civil Government Thoreau starts off by telling us That government
is best which governs least; (945). During his writing he talks about how he doesn t feel that the
government proves itself to be useful to the citizens. He feels that the leaders of his states
government have been elected because of majority and power, instead of their... Show more content

Bankston s piece, Thoreau s Case for Political Disengagement , both supports and disproves
Thoreau s insight. He sees Thoreau s point of view, and agrees with is way of peaceful protest. He
even compares the works of Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. to Thoreau, by establishing a
common ground in peacefulness and morality between them. On the other hand, however, he feels
that the political quietism that Thoreau uses is not strong enough or clearly justified. He
expressibly makes his point with one statement during his essay; As a member of a family and a
participant in a political order, my own conscience necessarily responds to the demands of my
social position (Bankston). For me, it is easy to see where Bankston stands. He agrees that people
should just not sit by and watch the government run the country into the ground, but he is also not
willing to make stand because it would be against the powerful majority. This concept is exactly
what Thoreau was warning his readers about back then, and it still appears to be heavily debated topic
The Utilisation Of Symmetry Within Filmmaking
This following proposal will feature how the utilisation of symmetry within filmmaking, primarily in
cinematography, is a stylised technique used to highlight significant events film narratives. This
proposal will decipher whether symmetry used as a stylistic filmic technique, is a notable and
powerful visual aid that heightens the viewers experience and significance of narrative
developments. The purpose of this study is to gauge information about how symmetry showcases a
posed and staged approach in filmmaking, and if that will drive the movement of filmnarratives.
Thorough analysis of examples of works by American director Wes Anderson will be conducted
throughout this proposal.

Introduction

The highly creative decision of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is due to the possibility of symmetry being used randomly and thoughtlessly, running a high risk
of creating visual disturbances in the narrative of the film, thus, potentially leading the initial
direction of the narrative astray and the viewers to be confused as the film advances (Thonsagaard,
L, 2012).

Wes Anderson (born 1969), best know as an Academy Award winning American film directorand
screenwriter is respected and has mastered the art of symmetry. His films are extremely identifiable,
as his constant usage of symmetry within his feature films create a powerful visual aid which are
capable of communicating complex meanings that cannot be conveyed visually without the addition
of symmetry. Anderson s work is also notable for his distinctive narrative writing and style and also
the inclusion of adding reoccurring collaborations with various actors and creatives (McClintock, P,
2014).

The definition of symmetry follows and refers to ...quality being made up of exactly similar parts
facing each other or around an axis (Oxford Dictionary of English). This proposal will primarily
focus on Anderson s filmmaking, discussing his utilisation of symmetry within his works and how
he produces a visual aesthetic and experimental style of filmmaking that has gained him the title of
being a respected director in the film industry. Anderson s reason behind using symmetry instead
Paired Arthropods
The universality of body segments with paired appendages in arthropods indicates that at least some
parts of the developmental networks responsible for segmentation and appendage patterning cannot
be changed. Arthropods are developmentally constrained in that these networks must be conserved
and in that the networks for alternative appendage development do not exist. Variations in parts of
the developmental pathways responsible for segmentation and appendage patterning explain the
differences in body plan across the phylum. However, certain portions of the pathway must be
conserved, resulting in body segments with paired appendages in all arthropods. Research on the
developmental pathways that control segmentation in arthropods has shown that gene expression is
more highly conserved across the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, though the pattern of expression of pair rule genes may vary across arthropods, they
are consistently activated during development and play an important role in determining body
segments (Damen, 2007). Compared to genes further upstream in the segmentation pathway, pair
rule genes are highly conserved. The Notch/Delta system is much more divergent among arthropods
(Damen, 2007). Though Notch/Delta signaling plays an important role in Drosophila development,
it is not greatly involved in segmentation in Drosophila or other insects, but is very important in
segmentation in chelicerates (Damen, 2007). Additionally, while gap genes are crucial to
determining segmentation in insects, they play a much less significant role in non insect arthropods
like chelicerates and myriapods (Damen, 2007). Genes involved in appendage patterning in
arthropods are also highly conserved. The
Descriptive Essay About My Hair
I m the girl that refuses to put herself out there out of fear of rejection. The only thing about me
that is out there is my hair that is a screaming light blue. I do this to put my opinion out into the
world without talking. This however brings unwanted attention to me. My hair makes people stare.
Some think that it s cool and they complement me but others have look down on me because of it.
Even my own family has made comments putting me down about my hair. One time, for example,
my Aunt Darcie came up to me during a family party and started talking to me about my hair. You
are dying your hair for senior pictures, right? You don t honestly want that hanging up on your mom
s wall forever, do you?
My cheeks were beat red and I was so embarrassed but I told her that I wasn t going to. I kept my
hair blue just for my senior pictures just to show my Aunt I liked my hair and didn t want it some
normal color.
I try my best to blend in. I m quiet as I sit in the back of the classroom and observe my peers as
they talk and be open with each other; a habit that I have yet to shake through my many years of
school. My palms sweat when attention is brought to me. I replay everything I say over and over
looking for any flaw in the words that come out of my mouth. This action keeps me up late at night
picking a prodding at my memories and the mistakes I have made. Anxiety is my unwanted security
blanket that constricts my everyday life. It makes even the simplest tasks difficult.
Each day anxiety wraps its cold boney arms around me squeezing until it hurts. I have had anxiety
since the day I could remember. It makes even the simplest of tasks hard. I can barely form
sentences in situations because of it. I try my hardest to avoid contact with people. I will not raise
my hand in class out of fear of saying the wrong answer, partner projects terrify and public speaking
forget about it. There s times that I know the right answer but I don t want to speak up because of
the attention. Like in high school I was really good at history and in my sophomore year I knew
almost every question answered but I refused to even raise my hand.
My anxiety has also made it very hard to make friends. I guess being afraid to talk to
The Amish, Society and Culture
Case study/Cross Cultural Comparison

The Amish is a group of traditionalist Christians that rely on simple living, plain dress and refuse to
adapt to modern technology. The history of the Amish started in Switzerland in 1693 led by Jakob
Amman. Today majority of the traditional descendants of the Amish live in Pennsylvania and Ohio.
Family
In an average Amish family it consist of, a mother, father with an average of 7 children. Their
grandparents play a vital part of the family because once they pass; the children inherit their land,
property and wisdom. The father of the family is the bread winner (Providing the family with
money, food and shelter). Many Amish men seek jobs in areas such as

If an Amish are found that they have broken their baptismal vows, Church members can choose to
shun them. This means that s they are not allowed to interact with any other Amish or participate
in daily routines. Though the people that are shunned is believed to be very small. Australian
culture helps each other in many different ways and how they interact with each other. My
parents have conflicts over technology and how we have disagreements over how I like to go out
with my friends out of school. Instead of shunning someone, a problem is usually solved on the
day or immediately after. Age also affects the personal perception of the way we see different
things. A young child playing games find that it is fun and is harmless to themselves as for an adult
they see that a young child playing games is bad for the child s health. This causes a minor conflict
between the two and the differences they have.
Gender
Gender roles are defined by the sex. Males are normally the leaders of the community. People in
the Amish society chose not to challenge the stereotype of Male provider and the female
homemaker. Though modernisation can impact on traditional gender roles in the Amish society.
Generally the farms are passed onto males, and females are force to accept their role to marry and
become a farmwife. With the successfulness of women working in businesses, women s are being

Clockwork Orange Nadsat
Imagine a violence filled society where young gangsters run rampant and crime is at every corner.
A Clockwork Orange, by Anthony Burgess, presents a futuristic society where ordinary people find
themselves the targets of violent crime. Among these gangsters is fifteen year old Alex and his band
of droogs. Alexand his gang of troublemakers spend their days robbing and beating up innocent men
and women they encounter, all while assuming they are invincible to the consequences that could
come. However, Alex s actions catch up with him one day when he is imprisoned for assaulting a
woman. While incarcerated, Alex is the test subject of an experiment intended to revoke his love of
violence. The experiment is successful; however, it revokes not... Show more content on

Upon first reading the novel, one may find it difficult to understand Alex s slang heavy language.
This language, known as Nadsat, represents a Russian influence in Alex s society. Burgess was able
to hear the language spoken first hand upon traveling to the Soviet Union. There, he was able to
refine a simple yet plausible Slavic vocabulary... to revise and complete A Clockwork Orange
(Biswell 238). Nadsat is mainly spoken by teen troublemakers, such as Alex, because it cannot be
understood by mainstream society. The language, in a way, also encourages violence with unique
derogatory terms regarding women and rape (Goh 1). Upon understanding the language spoken by
Alex, one can further understand his actions and the way in which he is influenced by his
surroundings and the rest of society. Goh continues to explain how the use of language in this
novel makes a statement about the individual s (Alex s) struggle... for authenticity under
dystopian conditions of social control (1). This so called social control is consistent with what
Burgess may have seen in the Soviet Union and presents a motive for the way he portrayed the
government in the novel. As Alex speaks, the reader can infer that he has been given no choice but
to become the vicious criminal that he is. This, in turn, makes the reader feel a certain sympathy
towards him despite the despicable nature of his crimes. Also creating a unique theme of sympathy
is the use of Alex as a first person narrator. As a first person narrator, one can see Alex s innermost
thoughts and experience life as he lives it. Alex often describes his crimes in a humorous and
intimate manner, as stated in the article A Clockwork Orange (1). John Tilton further continues this
idea by explaining how Burgess creates emotion in Alex through his poetic language
The As A Form Of Influence On European Art
In nineteenth century Europe, exoticism grew in popularity as a form of influence on European art.
Renown art historian Enrico Crispolti defines exoticism as the imitation of elements in alien cultures
that differ from native traditions. Exoticism carries its own spectrum of interpretation, in that certain
works of art can fall under or between two main categories: pure exoticism and transcultural
composing. Through the use of non Western elements in Western music, exoticism seeks to evoke a
group perceived as different, often by othering said group. Ralph P. Locke, former professor of
musicology at Eastman School of Music, views pure exoticism as a form of exoticism with the
purpose of representing an exotic subject as different from what is considered acceptable or
appropriate. Transcultural composing focuses on a hybrid of Western and non Western styles, and is
intended to pay a tribute to the music. There is no clear cut definition of musical exoticism, but
rather a window open to varied interpretations and opinions. Renowned for his operas, English
composer Benjamin Brittenwrote Death in Venice which uses non Western elements to represent
something as other within the character of the protagonist, Aschenbach. On the spectrum of
exoticism, Britten s Death in Venice falls under the category of transcultural composing due to
Britten s respectful use and understanding of gamelanstyle music. Claude Debussy, one of the most
influential French composers of the
To the Mercy Killers Analysis
Dudley Randall s poem To the Mercy Killers tackles one of the most controversial issues in
America today: euthanasia. No other issue has divided and caused much division and divergence
in thought and views in this county as mercy killing and has through the years along with
abortion become the defining topic of politics in America. Mercy killing and in fact the very
question of what defines life has becoming a moral dilemma and a divisive factor in our society.
Dudley Randall s To the Mercy Killers is a moving appeal against the practice of mercy killing and
the tormenting affect it has on its victims. The poem was written in 1973 by the African American
poet and librarian Dudley Randall and has since become one of the most effective... Show more

Wesley Bucktin In To Kill A Mockingbird
good morning/afternoon class. my name is aaliya and my character from the Jasper Jones novel is,
Wesley Bucktin.

before i start, heres a bit of background as to who my character is:

******
Wesley Bucktin, is a father to the protagonist, Charlie, and husband to Ruth. Ruth came from wealth
and when she and Wesley eloped into the small town of Corrigan, Ruth s parents resented Wesley for
it, eventually as did Ruth.
Wesley is often characterised as having similar qualities to Atticus Finch from the TKAMB novel
and like Atticus, Wesley is very patient and loving towards his child.

A character to majorly shape Wesley s storyline would be Ruth. throughout the novel, Ruth appeared
to be a very controlling figure in the lives of both Wesley and ... Show more content on

Lu s property from vandals. His courage was greatly admired by his son especially as it wasn t really
expected, in this time, for anyone to come to the rescue of the Lu family, due to the Vietnamese war
which occurred previous to the start of the novel, where many lost family members at the hands of
Vietnamese soldiers. this also reflects back to Atticus Finch standing up for a person of colour, in a
time where such thing was disgraceful.

the point of view in the novel is through the eyes of Wesley s child. it is clear that when explaining
the story and intentions of a character through the eyes of another, major parts are left out,
unexplained or one sided. this was the case with this story as it was through the eyes of Charlie and
how Charlie saw his father, therefore limiting the characters exposure to being nothing other than a
father. this caused a restraint when trying to get to know Wesley in more depth as a s

Towards the end of the novel my character, i would say, stays the same for the most part. he is
forced into a different situation by Ruth s betrayal but handles it how he would ve at the start of the
novel. he takes it as its given and continues to be there for Charlie, just as he was at the start of the
