Upon first reading the novel, one may find it difficult to understand Alex s slang heavy language.
This language, known as Nadsat, represents a Russian influence in Alex s society. Burgess was able
to hear the language spoken first hand upon traveling to the Soviet Union. There, he was able to

to become the vicious criminal that he is. This, in turn, makes the reader feel a certain sympathy
towards him despite the despicable nature of his crimes. Also creating a unique theme of sympathy
is the use of Alex as a first person narrator. As a first person narrator, one can see Alex s innermost
thoughts and experience life as he lives it. Alex often describes his crimes in a humorous and
