Brown And Levinson s Theory Of Politeness
The theory of politeness is based on the notion of face. From the perspective of politeness, face is
categorized into two types in opinion of Goffman (1967); positive face, which expresses a desire
by an individual to be amenable, liked and appreciated, and negative face, which expresses a desire
to remain autonomous, not to be imposed upon and not to disobey upon others. Certain conventions,
practices and rules in a language guide individuals in order to achieve a positive or negative face.
Both in isolation and in context, that is not easy to differentiate these two types of politeness. Due to
this, there are some rules and criteria that help the user of each language reach these sorts of
politeness. Watts (2005) view to politeness is a bit positive and consider politeness as human
behavior and a moral concept, which is in a dynamic state. He proposes that based on context and
time a linguistic digit could be interpreted as polite or impolite and linguistic forms could not be
inherently polite or impolite. This view implies that... Show more content on [Link] ...
Studying and working on politeness theory, Brown and Levinson (1987) include politeness in two
categories. First, there is positive politeness, which leads to closeness and affiliation. It is the wish
for being liked and appreciated and consists of acts such as complementing others and showing
interest for them. Second, there is negative politeness, which leads distance and formality. In
negative face, there is a wish for being autonomous. Brown and Levinson (1987) claim that
politeness must be maintained, enhanced, and permanently attended to interaction. A threat to a
person s face is termed a face threatening act and they discuss that such acts in general need an
extenuating statement or repair otherwise a collapse of interaction will

subject areas will be explored in depth and taught in a separate manner.

My classroom will consist of colorful and stimulating bulletin boards to encourage the thought

enforced through out the school year. Students will be expected to conduct themselves accordingly.
Misbehavior will be dealt with in an assertive manner, although if students behave accordingly to
classroom rules. The class will have positive rewards and many verbal praises.

The seating will be arranged in an authoritarian fashion, in order to set rules. As the students and I,
become more familiar with one another, and students act according to the rules set. The seating
arrangement will be placed in a non authoritarian fashion.

As assignments and projects will be given, if funds from the government will not suffice for the
classroom projects, I will try my best to assist the class. This

Essay On Environmental Pollution
Pollutants are impacting aquatic organisms distributed by daily human activities and natural
occurrences. An extensive amount of pollutants such as pesticides, heavy metals, and hydrocarbons
can result in direct significant damage, e.g. death. However lower levels of these harmful substances
can be stored in an organism and increase as it continues and follows up the food chain, a process
called biomagnification or bioaccumulation, having the greatest effect on the top predator of that
food chain. A common result of the pollutants can lead to stress, changing of the immune system,
inhibit lysozyme activity, damage gills, metabolism, and growth. Other factors include an excessive
amount of nutrients in the environment. Nitrogen can make its way into aquatic ecosystems when
there is an increase in nitrous oxide in the air, allowing eutrophication. Algae and bacteriafeed off the
nitrogen, so a high number of these organisms appear and use oxygen around them as the feed,
causing hypoxic zones, or dead zones. Acidification, an increase in the ecosystem s pH acidity from
acid rain, which occurs from an increase in CO2 from air pollution. Aquatic organisms have a range
of tolerance, and water with high acidic pH will lead the organism out of the range of tolerance,
resulting in stress of the organism, and eventually death. Further studies are being pursuited to see
larger impacts of globalized pollution on aquatic species and their ecosystems.

Google Inc., the definition of Sustainability Essay
In todays day and age, what do people do when they need answers to a question they don t know?
They Google it. In 2012, on average, there are 5,134,000,000 Google searches a day (Google Official
History, comScore). Google Inc. (GOOG) was started in 1996 by two PhD students at Stanford
University, Larry Page and Sergey Brin. The first funding they ever received was a net worth of
100,000 dollars given by Andy Bechtolsheim. The company has grown over the years and is now
worth over 250 billion dollars alone. How has a one small company grown so much and will it be
able to sustain itself?
Sustainability isn t just about how long a company can survive but sustainability also incorporates
three important components, the three E s: equity, ... Show more content on [Link] ...
As more companies emerge Google will receive more people to advertise and contribute to their
income.
While 96% of Google s revenue comes from advertising, the company is so big that that still
leaves $1.5 billion unaccounted for. Again, quoting Google s annual report, [Google] derive[s]
most of [its] additional revenues from [its] enterprise products, as well as [its] display advertising

(and be primarily identified) as exclusively about search, but its size has allowed it to aggressively
buy up companies that stray from the advertising heavy business model(Greg McFarlane). Google
s income is not only likely to increase over time, but also stay constant, creating a sustainable
income. More companies will look toward them to advertise and they will make more money.
With it already being a huge company the money they receive can be used to buy other
companies and create new products. As far as competition goes Google doesn t really have any

Advertise through a smaller company such as Yahoo? With a never ending cycle of advertisement
and large amounts of income Google is very sustainable economically and is not likely to disappear
anytime soon.

What Do You Mean By Carson s Tone At Work
I think that in an overall sense, Carson is trying to get the reader to question what she s wrote.
What I mean by this is that the author is trying to get people to question their own roots through
literature and reflection while also trying to break stereotypes. Many of her poems seem to have
a blurred line between written and oral deliverance (as in the way they re read), probably because
she uses such personalized tones throughout each poem. Poem 54 takes on the personal and
written tone through the repetitive use of you and shows that whichever persona wrote this, they
knew the recipient well. The repetitive use of you also effectively creates an accusatory tone. It
helps list all the things that the recipient hasn t done/has done wrong but it also works as a plea
using guilt to get the recipient to come home. The author also repeats the word I a lot throughout
the poem to help show the recipient that they ve had to deal with the harder aspects in life while
they were away and that they were taking the easy route by only showing up to funerals instead of
spending precious time with their family. The author also writes her poem with long lines. The use
of long lines... Show more content on [Link] ...
Much similar to a letter. Whereas if enjambment was used, it would have to play with form much
differently, taking away the written letter aspect of this poem by forcing readers to pause between
ideas. The end stopped lines of this poem all have complete ideas and slow the pace of the poem,
forcing the reader to slowly read through the long lines instead. The line length and enjambment
throughout this poem is what really made it stand out. I think if any other form was used, the poem
would completely lose its meaning and would fall
Paris 1924 Olympics
Paris 1924 Olympic was different than any other previous Olympics. Sport had become a
universally popular activity, particularly as a spectator event, and around 1,000 journalists were
present in Paris to report back around the world. There were 44 nations and 3,089 athletes took
part, and although the Games are seen as being the first truly modern Olympics, they were not
complete, as only 135 of the competitors were women. Most of the athletes were hosted in the first
ever Olympic village, a village of temporary wooden constructions that had been put up alongside
the stadium. A couple of Paris 1924 Olympic legacies have been retained. The Paris Olympic
Stadium was the venue which hosted the opening and closing ceremony of Paris 1924 Olympics.
Should Double Pane Windows Be Allowed
More is always better Right? If you re talking about salary, we d immediately agree with you.
More cash in your pocket after paying the tax man is definitely a good thing. When you find
yourself pondering whether triple pane windows are a wiser financial decision than double pane
replacement windows the answer isn t always so cut and dried.
Single pane options were the only option for hundreds of years. As technology advanced and
manufacturing processes improved, double pane windows became the gold standard for most
homeowners. Some window companies are suggesting that the triple has become the new double,
providing the ultimate return on investment for both energy efficiency and higher property resell
value.

You ll hear fewer outdoor sounds and your neighbors won t be privy to personal conversations or
complain about your music volume as long as your windows are closed and you use some personal
restraint. Ask about acoustic ratings if you like to feel your music as much as you hear it, the lower
the rating the greater the noise transmission control.
Safety and security: Both triple pane replacement windows and double pane replacement windows
offer security features. Some companies promote triple pane window solutions as more intruder
resistant than double pane windows. Three pane configurations are stronger than windows with
fewer panels; therefore not as easy to break as styles with fewer panes.
But, there are less expensive double pane solutions. For example, installing heat tempered glass,
which is four times as strong as traditional glass panels, is an option for areas of your home where
you want a stronger glazing choice. You can also design windows with patterned glass to increase
privacy and recessed locks that make access more difficult. Neither double pane nor triple pane
windows are unbreakable.

The Effects of Two or More Environmental Stressors on Aggressive Behaviour

An environmental stressor is a situation, which causes a negative emotional experience,

accompanied by predictable physiological, biochemical and behavioural changes that are designed to
help us adapt to the stressor. The three main environmental stressors are heat, noise and crowding, all
of which may result in heightened physiological and psychological behaviour.

A large number of studies have investigated the possibility of a connection between temperature and
aggressive behaviour. Carlsmith and Anderson (1979) found that hotter weather gives a higher
chance of a riot when they looked at disturbances in 79 US cities ... Show more content on

It could also be a biological explanation. For example, the production of testosterone increases when
you get hot (Anderson and Anderson, 1998). The relationship between temperature and aggression is
not as simple as either the linear model or the curvilinear model, as other variables may affect the
relationship.

Crowding, another environmental stressor, is the unpleasant sensation that too many people
share the same space. It is personal in how much it affects us, as it depends on how comfortable
we feel in the close presence of others, and also how peoples perception of crowding leads to
them reacting to certain levels of density. Calhan (1962) conducted an animal experiment into
crowding leading to aggression. He placed an expanding rat population into a small area, and
observed that they soon began sexually assaulting and killing each other, which confirms a link
between crowding and aggression. Research into crowding in Australian clubs done by Macintyre
and Hamel (1997) showed that the level of crowding in each nightclub was related to the number
of observed aggressive incidents. This is a field experiment, meaning it has ecological validity and
is not artificial and so can be applied to real life. However, they did not get participant consent for
observations, which raise ethical issues. It seems clear that crowding is related to
