ELECTRICAL SAFETY TEST #1
CONDITION OF ELECTRICAL RECEPTACLES
PURPOSE: To identify substandard or defective electrical receptacles that could cause an
electrical hazard.
EQUIPMENT: Polarity/ground tester, retention force tester.
PROCEDURE: Conduct a physical inspection. Note if the plastic cover is broken or not held
firmly in place in a way that would
interfere with normal safe use of the outlet. Look for evidence of damage from shorting
or arcing (burns or
cracking).
Hospital-grade outlets are recommended for all critical care or electrically sensitive
patient areas. Two-slot (un-
grounded) outlets, particularly those in patient care areas, should be scheduled for
replacement as soon as possible.
Insert polarity%ground tester and confirm that the polarity is correct and that the
ground connection is in place. Note
that this type of tester does not indicate the quality of the ground connection.
For good electrical connections between the outlet contacts and the plug electrodes, the
phosphor bronze leaves should
make good surface contact with each of the blades.
Insert the retention force tester into all three slots of each outlet. Confirm that the
retaining force is 8 ozs.
(225 gms) or more.
ACTION: If immediate repairs cannot be made when a defect is found, the outlet should
be tagged as defective before
continuing and the Engineering Department notified so that repair or replacement can be
undertaken as soon as possible
