Essay about Andre Dubus The Curse
Andre Dubus The Curse
The Curse ; by Andre Dubus is about Mitchell Hayes, a forty nine year old bartender who is
witness to a rape. The rape occurs right before closing when five bikers rape a young woman
while holding Mitchell at bay. After the rape, Mitchell is distraught over his decision of not making
a stronger attempt to help the girl. Police, family and friends try to comfort Mitchell by telling him
he made the right decision. However, he continues to feel guilt and self doubt over whether or not
he could have done more in order to prevent the rape from occurring.
The central idea is that man is responsible for defining his own sense of honor. A clear choice
between right and wrong does not always exist. The safest ... Show more content on [Link]

I think I could have stopped it. ; An example of his actions comes after the bikers had left the rape
scene, Then he picked up her sneakers from the floor and placed them beside her and squatted near
her face?. ; An example of his thoughts comes after the bikers leave, He wanted to speak to her and
touch her, hold a hand or press her brow, but he could not. ;
A secondary character is Joyce. She is flat and static. She is flat because she is a minor character
and lacks complexity. She is static because her character does not change during the course of the
story.
Dubus uses two methods of indirect characterization in describing Joyce; he uses words and
actions. An example of her words comes when she is trying to comfort Mitchell: You ll be a good
witness. ; An example of her actions comes after Mitchell has told her of the tragedy, ?she kneeled
beside him and massaged his shoulders and rubbed his temples and pressed her hands on his
forehead. ;
The central conflict in the story is an internal one. Mitchell has a conflict between his inaction versus
his definition of honor. The conflict represents his struggle concerning the guilt he feels over not
attempting to stop the rape, even though his friends and family assure him that he made the right
decision. The conflict is unresolved.
The point of view of The Curse ; is limited omniscient. An example of this comes when Mitchell
thinks to himself: ?he wanted from
The Brooklyn Interns For Arts And Culture Program Essay
Question 4 What were your main obstacles in participating in the Brooklyn Interns for Arts and
Culture program? : Supervisors highlighted that some obstacles they faced in the problem pertained
to timing which included predicting and managing hours that their intern needed for specific projects
and tasks, finding specific days that their interncould work that we would be best for them and the
intern, and time constraints caused by their overall department being busy. Additionally, supervisors
stated that other obstacles they faced in the program pertained to managing a high school intern
which included finding tasks appropriate for a high school intern, adapting their management style
for a teenager (learning to give specific guidelines and instructions to intern instead of giving the
intern the leeway to figure out the best practice ), balancing their work duties along with supervising
and engaging their intern. And finally, one supervisor accounted that one challenge they faced in the
program was providing desk space for the intern due to space constraints.
Question 6 Did you feel you had adequate support from the Internship Coordinator? Among
supervisors who participated in the post survey, 100% of supervisors stated that they felt they had
adequate support from the Internship Coordinator.
Question 7 Was the time frame of the program adequate for your current work schedule or should it
be different? Please explain. Most of the supervisors felt that the time
Authentic Performance Essay
Introduction
Messiah is an oratorio, written in English and composed by George Frideric Handel in 1741, with
a scriptural text compiled by Charles Jennens from the King James Bible and the version of the
Psalms included with the Book of Common Prayer. It was first performed at the Great Music Hall,
Fishamble Street in Dublin on 13th April 1742. From this modest premiere, it gained huge
popularity and has become one of the most well known and regularly performed pieces of Western
choral music. This essay will discuss whether it is possible to produce an authentic performance of
the work and if that is desirable.
Authentic Performance ( AP )
The concept of Authentic Performance ( AP ) is an artistic ideal involving playing a piece of music as

Nor do newspaper reports really help us understand how it was performed they simply report it as a
triumph and a delight .
Specifically
There is also a specific conundrum with an AP of Messiah we need to decide which performance
we are trying to replicate, as there is no single, definitive version of the oratorio. In total Handel
created altogether nine different versions of the work, and forty three versions of the fifteen
different solos. Every single one of the nine different versions that Handel wrote is unique, and
all have a wide variety of approaches. Handel re orchestrated the piece almost every time he re
performed it over the years before his death in 1759, introducing new movements and re writing
others, as well as increasing the number of performers/instrumentalists and making adjustments to
suit the songs to the different singers competences. For example, at the London premiere on 23
March 1743, Handel wrote a new setting of And lo, the angel of the Lord for a new soprano,
Kitty Clive, and added a new song ( Their sound is gone out ) for his favourite tenor, John Beard.
For performances in 1750, he composed new versions of the original bass arias But who may abide
and Thou art gone up on high for the male (castrati) alto, Gaetano
The Importance Of A Shatter Zone In The Film Winter s Bone
A shatter zone used to be defined as a belt of randomly fissured or cracked rock that may be filled
with mineral deposits (Moon,pg 1). After World War two the meaning changed dramatically.
According to Moon and Talley, a shatter zone is now is borderlands where refugee populations
migrated in large numbers to escape the pressures of the stateand/or the capitalist economies
through which the state exerted itself (Moon, Pg 1). For the Most part, James Scott agrees with
Moon and Talley when he defines a shatter zone as places of resistance to and refuge from some of
the most destructive effects of state making and state rule (Scott,pg 22). This zones are found
wherever a large number of people have gone to seek refuge in out of the way places ( Scott,pg 23).
A shatter Zone is depicted throughout the Film Winters Bone .
The film, Winter s Bone, open with a shot of Ree Dolly s house. It shows that they are not very
well off, and that the mom is sick and will alway be sick. Ree has assumed her mom s role in
taking care of her young siblings. The film then shows the neighbors skinning a deer to eat. The
Dolly family is watching and hoping that they will bring them some of the meat. The neighbors do
bring them meat, showing a leveling mechanism because a leveling mechanism is to ensure social
equality. This shows that the people living here are self sufficient and do not rely on grocery stores.
A sheriff then rolls up asking for the mom, but ended up just talking to Ree.
Youth Delinquency
I searched for articles and recent publications on the topic of youth delinquency in the United States
on both Google, which is the search engine I use the most, as well as on EBSCO. Reading through
the results on both search engines was very informative and I believe I was able to form a solid
understanding of the topic and current discussions through the information I gathered.
Google
While searching through Google I received a lot of relevant information. However, when I started
to assess my results based on accuracy, authority, objectivity, and currency, I discovered that
researched based solely on the results from Google may not be the most beneficial. In terms of the
search engines accuracy, the first page of results included ... Show more content on [Link] ...
The problem with that is that youth face a lot more pressures especially with technology and social
media that those articles did not take into account.
EBSCO
I also searched on EBSCO for information about youth delinquency and this time was able to
compare my results on this research platform to the results I received on Google. The results I
received on EBSCO were heavily academic with the majority being from academic journals, other
research based databases, libraries, established corporations, and open source information. The
results were quite accurate in that they were heavily technical with industry jargon and references to
other works and sources of information. From page to page, the results yielded a high level of
relevance to the topic with little that did not relate to what I was trying to learn. I could discern the
authority of the authors and originators because they had their titles and connection to the topic
clearly stated within the article. I had concrete evidence that these were field experts who had some
level of authority and therefore reliable knowledge to be publishing information regarding youth
delinquency. The objectivity in the article was also clear because the publications had structure and
included the methods that were used to produce the research. Those results often included
components such as an abstract, thesis, graphs, data, and
Christian Meditation
Some Christians are against meditation in general, or even mediation in Christian context. Some are
fearful because they automatically associate any type of meditation with Asian religious traditions.
The Christian practice of meditation has been forgotten by some, and it has been centuries since it
was a common tradition. In his book, Prayer of Heart and Body, Thomas Ryan says that rather than
learning intellectually about God that the meditationallows the Christian to know Him through direct
experience. Christian meditation has been around as long as Christianity itself, including the three
major branches, Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant including evangelical denominations. In his thesis on

Augustine was a Christian monk from the sixteenth century who used devotion and memory to
reflect on Genesis as the model for spiritual life with God. St. Augustine s meditation is an example
of devotional meditation. Augustine s prayer life focused on engaging the mind, emotions and
motivation for a direct link to God. St. Teresa of Avila, also of the sixteenth century, emphasized
what is known as a prayer of union and the boy as a means to achieve it through importance of
contemplative prayer and meditation on the greatness of God. Her works were part of the inspiration
behind Jeanne Marie Bouvier de la Motte Guyon and the Quietist controversy of the seventeenth and
eighteenth centuries. Meditation in the Society of Friends, or Quakers, is closely related to the
Quietist movement because they both focus on internal spiritual life with God. Protestant Bishop
Joseph Hall, a ...of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was influenced by Augustine and wrote
several works on meditation titled The Arte of Divine Meditation, Meditations and Vowes, and
Heaven on Earth. Despite this, Hall saw meditation as no more than a means to turn the mind on a
spiritual item through dialog on a topic. Hall identified three types of meditation: two deliberate
forms of meditation logical and emotional and then what Hall referred to as an occasional meditation
because it was prompted by external
Reflective Essay Writing
Talking is an organized activity. Talking may lead to friendship, and friendship may lead to
another type of relationship. Building relationships with other human beings is, in most cases, a
fundamental necessity. However, these relationships, no matter how natural and organized they
may seem, do not always end up the way I would like them to. I believe that this is also natural.
Feeling sad or more specifically, heartbroken is a part of a natural, yet vicious cycle. It s organized,
there are steps even if this is not noticeable at first. Everyone handles reaching the end of this cycle
differently. Some dye their hair, others start a workout addiction, and others form other addictions. I
write. Poetry, to be more specific, but not pretty or neat poetry. I write terrible messes of words in
stanzas that aren t all that cohesive. I don t write with the intention of it being pretty, though. I write
to figure things out.
Somewhat recently, I found myself heartbroken and shortly after that I found myself writing again
for the first time in years. I used to love writing, and I even wanted to be a novelist when I was
younger, but somewhere down the road I decided that was too unrealistic and put the pen down.
Picking it up again a short while ago felt natural, and it almost felt as if those years between never
happened. As I was writing I found myself understanding what I was feeling. This is where Noё
comes in.
Noё makes the claim that all of the arts, are organizational, or

Chanté Moore Net Worth $1,5 Million
With her father being a church minister, Chanté Moore grew up in an intensely religious, but also
musical environment, which actually influenced her career decisions. She is the youngest child of
the family, having an older brother Kelvin and sister La Tendre. Chanté started singing in a church
in her early childhood and decided to work in music industry while she was still in a high school.
Meanwhile, Chanté was also concentrated on modeling, taking part in various beauty shows and
looking for building her career as a singer. Louil Silas, executive of MCA ... Show more content on

married to her first husband, Kadeem Hardison, Chanté released one of her most successful songs
called Chante s got a man. She then announced her fourth album Exposed in 2000, straight after
the divorce with Kadeem. In the year 2002 Chanté married an American R B singer Kenny
Lattimore, another stroke for her career. The album Things that Lovers Do recorded and released
by the famous couple ended up counting more than a million copies sold. This success, however,
did not prevent the couple from divorcing later on in the year 2011. Chanté Moore has two children,
daughter and a son, one from each marriage
Chaucer s Women From Eve to Mary Essay
Chaucer s Women From Eve to Mary The Middle Ages was an interesting time to be a woman. For
centuries the church generally disapproved of, with equal measure, women and sex. Women were
not even thought of as human beings, and were seen as necessary only in what they could do for
their men. When the men left for the Crusades women were given a larger role in the upkeep of
their husbands houses and estates, and assumed a more public role in the community. This gave the
women a greater feeling of independence, which they did not relinquish entirely when the men
returned. As the men returned from the crusades they brought with them a new found openness to
ideas, and a newfound respect for the worship of the Virgin Mary. These are two of... Show more

The narrator admires her good looks from afar and treats her as if she is a character in some
minstrel s courtly love song. Even her name is not a religious one; Eglentyne would have been a
name associated with the romances of Medieval England, not the church. Chaucer shows the
Prioress to be a charming fraud. She acts above her station by keeping dogs, speaking French
(with an English accent), and wearing jewelry, which would be inappropriate on any nun in any
century. Her table manners are also courtly, she never spills any sauce and never gets any on her
fingers. They way she eats is also showcases her virtuous nature, the way people eat has long been
a gage of what they are like in bed. The narrator also shows the Prioress to be selectively
tenderhearted. The proof of her hypocritical nature is shown in her attentions to her dogs. But
sore weep she if oon of hem were deed, Or if men smoot it with a yerde smerte: She cares deeply
about her dogs, she loves them, she hates to see them suffering. She also feeds them meat, milk
and expensive bread, to keep them healthy. Too bad that there are a lot of people in England
starving in the aftermath of the plague, as long as her dogs are fine, she is happy. By showing the
Prioress in comparison to what a Lady of that time would have been, and by allowing her to be
admired by the narrator and the others in a non religious way Chaucer shows us the church s
My Orchard
My orchard had a lot to teach me. The trees respond to life according to the seasons; I needed to
honor that cycle inside of me. There would be a spring with the budding of new growth and then
a summer where the new and improved me would blossom and bear fruit. Fall would be the
harvest and celebration of me. Winter was the time to let go of who I thought I had become in
order to make room for the growth of yet a more authentic me. Life is a process, or better yet, a
journey that has its own destination. My destination was rarely known even though I set goals and
intentions for myself. Houston had served as my Oz and I, like Dorothy, had returned home again,
not only to Sedona but also more importantly, to myself. There s no place like home.

When I returned from Houston, I took a part time job to work with plants and herbs that were turned

work there. Best of all, the organically grown and wild plants sustained and nurtured me with their
life force and beauty.
I sometimes worked with a very unusual plant, the carnivorous Pitcher plant. It is quite beautiful with
its long light green stem and alluring delicate looking pink and white leaves that have evolved into a

Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy
As the social worker becomes more mindful about the clients multiple and overlapping problems,
they will be provided with a greater awareness about the best way to intervene across the micro,
macro, and meso levels (Cournoyer, 2014). The way in which people view the world around them
is based on their previous beliefs and experiences and can be either realistic and accurate or
distorted (Walsh, 2013). Peoples distorted view of the world results in emotional and behavioural
problems related to their inability to adapt to their environment (Walsh, 2013). Cognitive
Behavioural Therapy(CBT) is a form of psychotherapythat emerged in social work practice during
the 1960s (Walsh, 2013). Research has shown that CBT is effective when working with clients who
display symptoms of depression and anger (Dowd, Clen and Arnold, 2010).... Show more content on

The goal of CBT is to assist the client to make a connection between their perception of their
environment and their thoughts which are influencing their behaviours (Gladstone, 2017).
Another key concept that should be considered in CBT is the term schemas which Walsh (2013)
defines as the way we organize our thought process, store information, process new information,
and integrate the products of those operations (knowledge) (p. 175). In the case study, Naana
described her perception of herself to the social worker by stating what is wrong with me. This
belief is a dysfunctional automatic thought that she assumes to be an accurate reflection of herself
(Walsh, 2013). Furthermore, this core belief has resulted in her experiencing a continuance of dark
periods in her life that have brought about feelings of depression and episodes of anger. The social
worker needs to assess her motivation towards making positive changes within her life and assist her
in identifying dysfunctional patterns of thinking (Walsh, 2013). Naana would need to learn how to
identify her negative thoughts such as feeling she
