While walking down the street one day, Edison noticed through a window that a brokerage firm
manager was in panic from what looked like a critical stock ticker had broken down (Israel 175).
Pushing his way through the crowd to the manager, Thomas took seconds to fix the unfamiliar

At the peak of Arthur Miller s success, Death of a Salesman arose as one of America s exceptional
dramas composed in the twentieth century. Due to the significant measure of brilliance and
originality the play exhibited and brought upon the era, it earned a Pulitzer Prize award in 1949.
Plainly, the notable piece of Miller s identifies as a tragedy since it reveals the tragic hero like
qualities and actions of the main character, Willy Loman. Moreover, the nature of Willy s role
illustrates Willy as a tragic hero in the form of what Aristotle described as a tragic hero in Poetics,
regarding the traits a tragic hero conveys. Within the principles of Aristotle s Poetics, one can
understand that every tragic hero was born as an individual of authority and contains a tragic flaw or
in other words, hamartia that results in his death. However, Willy is not a man of noble birth and
is, in fact, a traveling salesman that struggles to make a living. Although as seemingly ordinary

Introduction
According to Feeding America, a U.S. Hunger Relief Organization, over 50 million people suffer
from hunger in America. Although a complex issue, nonprofit organizations such as food banks
make tremendous contributions each year toward combating hunger. Unfortunately, the majority of
food donated to the Puyallup Food Bank located in Puyallup, Washington is heavily processed. A
heavily processed diet can lead to nutritional deficiencies in fiber, calcium, iron and vitamins. These
nutrients are vital to human survival.
Additionally, during non holiday months, donations to the Puyallup Food Bank decrease
considerably. To change this and help the food bank receive sufficient nutritional food donations year
round, team 6 decided to repurpose Sarah Pike s research project.
Using Ms. Pike s research, we realized the Puyallup Food Bank had issues in communicating its
needs effectively with the community. To assist in correcting this, we felt the design of a simple,
visually interesting call to action pamphlet would be an appropriate tool.
To accomplish the creation of this pamphlet, we broke the collaboration up into four tasks:

In Kindred Octavia Butler highlights how Dana s fear of the past will interfere with the present.
Butler demonstrates how Dana tries to fit into the 1800s to accomplish her goals and not have
consequences in the present. The patriarchy is shown in both time periods although it grows or
manifests differently. In kindred Dana travels back in timeto save Rufus her ancestor who always
seems to get himself in trouble. Dana is trying to make a difference in the past but it is very hard
when all she does is cause more trouble than anything else. Her husband is then left behind in the
past for five years and that changes him and ultimately leaves a mark on him. Dana tries to make a
difference and education the slaves in the past so that they can protect themselves but it backfires
and Dana gets punished. This shows the patriarchy in both periods that a man is viewed as more
powerful than women and is considered the man of the House. The past shapes the future. The past
ultimately makes the future.
In kindred the past and present are intertwined because of the past influence the present. The book

education. It takes place in the early seventies, following the civil rights movement and during a time
when the imbalance of wealth in terms of race was immense. Bamabara, through the use of narrative
point of tone, symbols, setting and characterization, brings out and develops what I believe to be the
two main themes of the story: materialism and social inequality.

The setting of the poor inner city helps us realize how unevenly the pie is split up between
members of society. As close as the inner city is to Manhattan, they are worlds apart in terms of
social class and wealth. The lesson that the children take out of the field trip with Ms. Moore
directly related to the fact that these children have been raised less fortunately that some, and to get
out of oppression and poverty, they will have to work. The children realize the value of money and
how unfair it is that there is so much wealth in Manhattan and a stone s throw away in the inner city,

Characterization in this story ties together all the elements that help strengthen the themes in The
Lesson. The two most important characters are Sylvia and Miss Moore, but the children as a group
also plan and important role. There are different types of characters and roles. For example, if we
look at the big picture, we have a teacher/student or authority/subject relationship between Miss

the Ranyevskaya s mourn, not only the loss of their orchard, but also the loss of a part of
themselves. The cherry orchardin Chekhov s work is really a symbol of the Ranyevskaya s past,
and each time they refuse to accept that the orchard will be cut down is another moment they
spend living in the past. The play commences with the return of Liubov Ranyevskaya from Paris,

feel but it focuses on the perseverance and resilience of the prisoners. Shukhov s character shines
through as a prominent example of the courage of the souls in the work camps. Further, Alyoshka
proves to never give up in the face of extreme conditions and is always around to help his gang.
Finally, Tyurin s undying devotion to leadership provides a refreshing look into the resilience of the

experienced in the gulags. Shukhov takes a job, which could normally be considered a gruelling
