advise the clients to see a physician for treatment. There are two categories

• Preservative . Maintaining the health of the facial skin by using
correct cleansing method, increasing circulation,

1. Help client to relax by speaking in a quiet and professional

manner. Explain the benefits of the products and service, and
answer any questions the client may have.
2. Provide a quiet atmosphere; work quietly and efficiently.
3. Maintain neat, clean, sanitary conditions in the facial work area
and an orderly arrangement of supplies.
4. For sanitary reasons you should never remove products from
their containers with your fingers. Always use a spatula. Obtain
and arrange in an orderly manner all the items you will be using
for the facial before the client arrives.
5. Follow systematic procedures.
6. If your hands are cold, warm them before touching the client’s
face.
7. Keep your nails smooth so as not to scratch the client’s skin.
EQUIPMENT, IMPLEMENTS AND MATERIALS

The following is a basic list of items you will need to give a facial to a
client. You can add other items that are beneficial to the client.

2.Moisturizer and
protective lotion

3.Mask

4. Gauze (for mask)

5.Astringent

6.Freshining lotion (mild

PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW IN FACIAL MASSAGE

The information given here may be changed to conform with your

instructor’s routine.

1.Prepare the client.

a. Greet the client and say something complimentary. This puts the
client at ease.

b. Ask the client to remove any jewelry (such as necklace and earrings)
and store it in a safe place. Clients might want to keep their handbags
nearby during the facial.

c. Show the client to the dressing room and offer assistance if needed.

d. Place a clean towel across the back of the facial chair to prevent the
client’s bare shoulders from coming in contact with chair.

e. Seat the client in the facial chair (offer assistance, if needed). Then
place a towel across the client’s chest. Next, place the coverlet (or
sheet) over the client’s body and fold the top edge of the towel over
the coverlet. Remove the client’s shoes and tuck the coverlet around
the feet. Some salons provide booties for the feet. These are worn to
and form the dressing room.

f. Fasten a headband lined with tissue, a towel, or other head covering

around the client’s head to protect the hair. There are several types of
head coverings on the market. Some types are of a turban design;
others are designed with elastic, similar to a shower cap. They are
generally made of either cloth or paper towels. Draping the head with
a towel is done in the following manner (for paper towel procedure, be
guided by your instructor):

1. For the towel lengthwise from one of the top corners to the opposite
lower corner, and place it over the headrest with the fold facing down.
Place the towel on the headrest before the client enters the facial area.

When the client is in a reclined position, the back of the head should
rest on the towel, so that one side of the towel can be brought up to
the center of the forehead to cover the hairline.

2. With the other hand, bring the other side of the towel over the
center and cross it over.

3. Use a regular bobby pin to hold the towel in place. Check to be sure
that all strands of hair are tucked under the towel, earlobes are not
bent, and the towel is not wrapped too tightly.
g. Remove lingerie straps from the client’s shoulders. (Alternate
method: If client is given a strapless gown to wear, tuck the shoulder
lingerie straps into the top of the gown.

h. Adjust the headrest, then lower the facial chair to a reclining

position.

i. Wash your hands.

2. Analyze the client’s skin.

a. Remove makeup to determine.

If the skin is dry, normal, or oily.

If fine lines or creases exist.

If blackheads (comedones) or acne are present.

If broken capillaries are visible.

If the skin texture is smooth or rough.

If the skin’s color is even.

b. This analysis will determine:

1. The choice of products to use for the massage.

2. The areas of the face that need special attention.

3. The amount of pressure to use when giving the massage.

4. if lubricating oil or cream is needed around the eyes.

5. Equipment or apparatus to use.

3. Apply cleansing cream.

a. Remove about a teaspoon of cleansing cream or lotion from the

container with a spatula. Blend the cream or lotion with your fingers to
soften it.

If the client is wearing heavy eye ang lip makeup, use a small amount
of cleanser and moist cotton pads or soft tissue to remove the excess
makeup. Be very gentle when working around the eyes and on the
mouth.

a. Starting at the neck, use both hands in a sweeping movement to

spread the cleansing product upward on the chin, jaws, cheeks, base of
nose to temples, and along the sides and the bridge of the nose. Make
small circular movements with your fingertips around the nostrils and
sides of the nose. Continue the upward sweeping movements between
the brows and across the forehead to the temples.
b. Take additional cleansing cream or lotion from the container with a
spatula and blend. Smooth down the neck , chest, and back with long,
even strokes.
c. Starting at the center of the forehead, move your fingertips in a circle
lightly around the eyes to the temples and back to the center of the
forehead.
d. Slide your fingers down the nose to the upper lip, to the temples and
forehead, lightly down to the chin, then firmly up to the jawline to the
temples and forehead.. Starting at the center of the forehead, move
your fingertips in a circle lightly around the eyes to the temples and
back to the center of the forehead.

4. Remove the cleansing cream.

a. Remove the cleansing cream or lotion with tissues; warm, moist

towels; moist cotton pads; or facial sponges. Start at the forehead and
follow the contours of the face. Remove all the cream from one area of
the face before proceeding to the next. Finish with neck, chest, and
back. (If eyebrows are to be arched, they should be done at this time.)

5. Steam the face (optional)

a. steam the face mildly with warm, moist towels or with a facial
steamer to open the pores so they can be cleansed of oil, blackheads,
makeup, and other debris.

Steam also helps to soften superficial lines and increases blood

circulation to the surface of the skin.

6. Apply massage cream.

a. Select a massage cream for the client’s skin type. Using the same
procedure employed to apply cleansing cream, apply massage cream
to face, neck, shoulders, and back.

b. If needed, apply lubrication oil or cream around the eyes and on the
neck.

7. Give facial manipulations.

a. Cover the client’s eyes with cotton pads moistened with a mild
astringent.
b. Massage the face using the facial manipulations describe in this
chapter.

8. Expose the face to infrared light. Infrared lamp may be given

during or after facial manipulations.

a. Cover the client’s eyes with cotton pads moistened with a mild
astringent.

b. Place the lamp at a comfortable distance from the face.

c. Expose the face to infrared rays for 3 to 5 minutes.

9. Remove massage cream.

a. Remove cream with tissues; warm, moist cleansing pads; or

sponges. Follow the same procedure as for removing cleansing cream.

10. Apply astringent or mild skin freshening lotion.

a. Sponge the face with cotton pledgets moistened with the lotion.

11. Apply a treatment mask formulated for the client’s skin

condition. Leave on the face for about 7 to 10 minutes.

12. Remove the mask with wet cotton pledgets on towels.

13. Wipe the face with pledgets saturated with a mild astringent.

14. Apply a moisturizer or protective lotion.

15. Completion.

a. Discard all disposable supplies and materials.

b. Close products containers lightly, clean them, and put them in their
proper places. Return unused cosmetics and other items to the
dispensary.

c. Placed used towels, coverlets, head covers, and like items in

appropriate containers.

d. Tidy up the work area.

e. Wash and sanitize your hands.
