Questions On The Midterm Exam

Midterm Exam
Part 1: #1 Through various sources from the past, it was relatively easy to determine the overall
perception towards Africans that dominated much of the 19th and 20th centuries. During these
times, Africans were seen as primitive and savage. They were inferior and less evolved in
comparison tot heir Western counterparts. For the most part, they believed that Africans had made
little, if any, progress since some humans left the continent and established themselves in other parts
of the world. While this viewpoint may seem ludicrous to most modern people, Westerners actually
based their claims on various theories. A major theory used to promulgate this viewpoint was the
concept of Social Darwinism. This theory holds that human beings, like other organisms, ares
subject to the concepts natural selection and survival of the fittest (kiem article). Social Darwinism
was readily employed as justifications to why Africans were inferior, and had slipped behind in the
race towards progress (connah 1). They had stopped developing a long time ago, and, as a result,
continued to live in savagery. Africa was the past, and the Western world was the present and future.
Research at the time did little to abate African stereotypes. Research mainly served the purpose of
studying human evolution rather than the place...[because it is] merely a backdrop to studies
pertaining to how Western culture has managed to establish itself as superior
Essay on slyvia plath
Sylvia Plath s quot;Mirror, quot; shows a truly thoughtful look into the different sights and feelings
a mirror would have if it were a live conscious being, unable to lie. By showing the thoughts and
emotions that a mirror would emit, Plath makes you look inward towards how you present yourself
not only to your mirror but also to yourself. This is an eye opening poem because of its truthful
descriptionsof the relationship between the inner feelings of people and how their outward
appearancesthat they portray of themselves affect them in and out of the public realm. Examples of
this are put throughout the poem quot;Mirror, quot; and can be found in just about every line of the
poem.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The next section of the poem introduces a woman into the life of the mirror. She look toward the
mirror seeking to find what she truly wants to discover (beauty), and the mirror truthfully reflects
back to her what it sees. She turns from the reflection as if to look for the quot;truth quot; in
something else, not excepting what she has just seen. Unable to find it, the mirror sees her
agitation and depression after seeing her true self within it. She is always looking into the mirror
to make sure everything is perfect and to put everything in it s place, so to speak. In this the
mirror, as the years seemingly pass, sees the young girl transform from her youth into an old
woman and lose all that she has fretted over and over about throughout her life. Each day, she is
reminded by the mirror of her lost youth and beauty that was once projected back at her so faithfully.
The mirror in the poem is a representation of the truths in life that as a person is difficult to come
to terms with in one s self. The woman s view of herself and her reluctance to accept her natural
and God given beauty, shows how we all (as a society or as an individual) find it hard to accept
ourselves for who we truly are. How we try to make ourselves into a conformed object of
quot;popular beauty quot; based upon our outward appearance, instead of going by how our personal
feelings that come from within us.
Environmental Pollution
Let have a critical look at our environment as a complex system with many different interaction
between its different components making life possible on earth. Unfortunately, human activities over
the years have adversely affected the chemical, biological, physical and social component of the
natural environmentleading to environmental pollutionand climatic change. In the United Kingdom
for example, the Great Smog of 1952 cannot be forgotten in history when we talk about
environmental pollution and it effect on human. The great smog of 1952 which was formed from
steady smog missed with soot and sulphur dioxide from coal burning occurred killed 12,000 people
in the United Kingdom killed (Fullerton 2016). This in addition to other serious environmental
pollution and their effect on the environment and human has greatly affected policies and control of
emissions into the environment. (Dunnings, ND)
In other to control further pollution to the environment, environmental modelling has been a crucial
tool in predicting the short and long term effects of human activities and pollutant in the
environment. EPA.gov (2017) define modelling as a simplification of reality that is constructed to
gain insights into select attributes of a physical, biological, economic, or social system. A formal
representation of the behaviour of system processes, often in mathematical or statistical terms. The
basis can also be physical or conceptual.

Equine Conditioning
Equines have been essential to the evolution of our society for over 4,000 years, providing speed
and strength to aid in work, travel, and war. They are extreme athletes, capable of producing high
speeds and stamina and are able to do so efficiently. This is due partly to the muscle physiology of
the equine. In most mammals, 40 45% of body weight is made of muscle mass. In horses this
percentage is increased to over 50%. Horses are not all the same, however. Different breeds have
different skeletal muscle builds as well as muscle types. For example, the Thoroughbred, one of the
most athletic breeds of horses, has a muscle mass percentage of almost 55%. (Gunn, 1979)
Conditioning of our equine athletes is an important part of equine care, especially... Show more

Interval training consists of workouts over a specified period of time or distance to increase the
heartrate, with breaks in between to lower heartrate. These exercises were carried out at walk,
trot, canter, and gallops. Swimming was also included on some days. Kikkuli describes strenuous
workouts, often for three times a day. An example in the text details trotting their horses on the
chariot for 18 miles and then galloping for over three quarters of a mile. They are returned to the
stable, washed down, and fed. At night they are then trotted for an additional 6 miles and galloped
for three quarters of a mile. Horses were given breaks, easy days, and days off as needed and while
the primary goal was to create a fit war machine, the horses were allowed to progress on their own
time. As the training continued, the exercises remained similar is style but the difficulty and length
increased. (McMiken, 1990) These exact methods were reproduced in the 1990s by Dr. Ann Nyland,
an endurance racing competitor. She took 10 Arabian horses and followed Kikkuli s strenuous
methods and found that his methods produced an extremely healthy and fit horse compared to
modern training techniques at the time. (Coetzee Eysturlid,

The business environment leading up to 1979 was a very challenging one as the U.S. economy
was still on the heels of a period of high inflation, low growth and high unemployment that started in
the 1970s. The deep recession hit almost all sections of the economy. Real gross national product
(GNP) fell by 2.5 percent while the unemployment rate rose above 10 percent and almost one third
of America s industrial plants lay idle.

Greason Differences In Shakespeare
Even though Shakespeare of Stratford is commonly believed to have written the plays ascribed to
him, Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford is a better candidate because he was educated in the royal
court mannerisms and there was coincidences in Hamlet s life with same thing happening in de
Vere s, he had the proper training to understand the complex grammar of Shakespeare s plays, was a
well known for his writing, and also had a shaking spear on the Oxford Coat of Arms.
Shakespeare of Stratford is shown as the writer of the William Shakespeare s pieces. While the
Occam s razor theory of the simplest solution is usually the correct one (Pressley) makes sense in
theory, there are gaps in the Stratford argument. For example, as mentioned by Keir Cutler,

Abstract
This paper describes a deployed educational technology application: the CriterionSM Online Essay
Evaluation Service, a web based system that provides automated scoring and evaluation of student
essays. Criterion has two complementary applications: E rater®, an automated essay scoring system
and Critique ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Work in automated essay scoring began in the early 1960 s and has been extremely productive
(Page 1966; Burstein et al., 1998; Foltz, Kintsch, and Landauer 1998; Larkey 1998; Elliot 2003).
Detailed descriptions of these systems appear in Shermis and Burstein (2003). Pioneering work in
automated feedback was initiated in the 1980 s with the Writer s Workbench (MacDonald et al.,
1982). CriterionSM Online Essay Evaluation Service combines automated essay scoring and
diagnostic feedback. The feedback is specific to the student s essay and is based on the kinds of
evaluations that teachers typically provide when grading a student s writing. Criterion is intended to
be an aid, not a replacement, for classroom instruction. Its purpose is to ease the instructor s load,
thereby enabling the instructor to give students more practice writing essays.

David Cameron s First Speech as Prime Minister
This political speech made by United Kingdom s new prime minister David Cameron in May
2010 could be considered the beginning of a new era in the politics of the country because, for
the first time after World War II, Britain would have a coalition government. David Cameron (born
in London in 1966) was elected leader of the Conservative Party in December 2005. He has
modernised his Party, the Conservatives, by introducing new ideas such as the environmental
defence, gay rights and abortion. He has a fresh, young and moderate image. The conservative
leader gave this speech outside No 10 Downing Street right after being appointed Prime Minister.
Cameron clearly describes UK s social and economic situation and points out the main... Show more

Students have reacted by protesting violently in front of the Conservative headquarters. They
complain specially about the raise in the tuition fees, that will be multiplied by three. The
spending review is also facing critics of the Institute of Fiscal Studies: the think thank believes
that the poor will be the most affected by the measures. During the campaign Labour, Liberal and
Conservatives agreed on the need to cut spending, but the proposal of Cameron was the hardest. At
the same time, the Tories thought the reforms had to start immediately, while the Labour preferred
to wait a year until the economic recovery was consolidated. Indeed, some fear that the spending
review will not help UK to get out of the crisis, and they claim that the present difficulties are only
an excuse to reduce the power of the state (an important principle in the Conservatives ideology).
On the other side, Conservatives think that the private sector will be able to support the economy
and will be reinforced, in spite of the cutback in spending. It is beyond doubt that the financial crisis
has affected deeply all Europe, and that something had to be done to reduce the number of British
citizens living on the governments subsidies. But it is not that clear that such strong measures had to
be taken. UK s economic situation is not as bad as other countries in Europe
Catch Me Essay
The movie Catch Me If You Can is based on the true life story of Frank Abagnale. He was the
youngest person to ever be put onto the FBI s most wanted list. The movie tells his story. Frank
Abagnale impersonated many people and forged many documents (many to include paychecks)
over the period of 5 years. He was said to be the world s greatest liar. Some of the documentsthat he
forged included, but were not limited to, false identification cards, birth certificates, and of course
paychecks. He got into the forgerybusiness by learning from his conman father. Frank traveled
around the world impersonating doctors, airline pilots, and even the assistant attorney general. The
FBI was always on his trail, but seemed to be one step behind... Show more content on

Another example would be the ID cards. Once the design template was made and the picture
scanned in, the ID could then be printed, using a sublimation printer, onto PVC cards thus making
them appear and feel real. As for the holograms, a vinyl cutter could be used to cut out a design,
the design applied to the ID card, and a topical reflective agent adhered on top. If necessary, a
lamination machine could be utilized to protect the newly formed hologram and card itself. With a
little practice and work, anyone could produce a perfect fake ID, just as Frank Abagnale figured out.

I would not recommend showing this movie to a class learning about graphics, or the graphics
process. It comes off in a way that says if you know how...go for it. For example: a high school
student sees this movie in class and then a week later is taught how to use Photoshop and the vinyl
cutter. What s to stop that student from taking the newly acquired knowledge and applying it, just
as he/she saw in the movie. I m not saying that every student would, but there are a select few who
would, and in my opinion showing this movie and giving the know how is almost like condoning
the act. I would rather show the students the movie The Paper staring Michael Keaton. This movie
shows the process needed to run a paper and some steps

the existence and fulfillment of all the basic needs.
Parental care:
Parental care means caring for the young ones for their protection and survival. The best example
of parental care is seen in human beings where parents look after the young ones with love, care
and affection. In other groups of vertebrates as well, parental care can be seen, not to the very high
extend but they do adapt some measures in order to protect the young ones. In fishes also parental
care can be noticed, not to the very high extent but some precautions to defend the young ones can

How Does The Environment Affect Children s Motivation To...
Some students struggle to read books either for class or for entertainment. Children with Attention
Deficit Disorder (AD/HD) have a chronic illness which often leads to trouble focusing on one thing
at a time. Some pediatric psychologists say the environment can cause a distraction to the a child
who suffers from AD/HD to focus on school work. How does the environment effect the child s
motivation to read and learn?
Children learn persistence from succeeding at a task the child was working hard on for a long
amount of time. A highly motivated child would commonly reach goals compared to a child who
has no motivation at all. How much a child is dependent on adults effects the child s motivation;
children who tend to have high motivation do ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Often times the way children get to school can affect the child s motivation to learn. Children
living in poverty tend to take public transportation to school; public transportation can affect what
time the child will arrive to school. Accessibility of transportation can affect both the educational
quality of children and physical quality. Children who depend on public transportation to get to
school commonly get up earlier compared to children who walk to school or receive a ride from
parents; having to wake up before or during 6am could cause the child to feel groggy or tired
during the day. Children who feel tired during class have more of a chance to day dream during
class. Parents and teachers can help their children who struggle with school and reading.
Parents and teachers can modify the child s environment to learn by guarding against interior noise
sources by checking the volume level on the child s music devices. If the iPod or Walkman is too
loud it can distract other students in the room because the music might bleed through the
headphones. If he listens to his favorite music too loudly, make proper volume adjustments. Also
monitor the volume level on computers, televisions, and other electronic devices, keeping them as
low as possible. (Evans,
