American Film Noir Essay

American Film Noir
There have been several debates over a long period of time concerning the validity of film noir as
a distinct genre. Essays and books have debated the term for years using various criteria and rubrics
to back up their respective positions on the subject. As the 21st century brings new and creative
trends from screenwriting to post production and everything in between, the boundaries of noir
become even less certain. One may even find a fitting parallel between the noir protagonist s
ambiguous and perilous quest with that of the hapless and naïve academic in search of an
unequivocal definition of noir itself. This essay aims at summarizing the evolution of American film
noir to present day, by using seminal works to determine how these films have become influenced by
American cinematic trends of postmodern narrative structures and subjectivity.
History of Noir
The argument to be made is that, with the emergence of cinematic technological advances coupled
with postmodernism s abandonment of meta narratives and traditional socio cultural identities,
filmmakers are digging even deeper into the dark recesses of the human consciousness and using noir
as a platform. It is not very surprising that to date no other genre relies more on the fragility and
temperamental nature of the human condition more. Oftentimes characters in a noir narrative are
either vindicated or condemned based
Stanley Patterson Essay
About the author: My name is Bennett Patterson, I currently live in New York. I am a former
American soldier. I currently work for the New York Times. Yesterday morning, Japan shocked
the U.S. after they bombed the naval base of Pearl Harbor. Nearly 20 ships were damaged or
destroyed, and there were over 3500 casualties. Their goal was simple, destroy the pacific fleet.
This attacked heavily damaged the U.S. navy, which could have meant the U.S losing World War 2.
But why wasn t the U.S. ready? Why did this attack come as such a big surprise? Japan and America
have been butting heads for awhile. When Japan was struggling economically, they thought gaining
more territory would be the answer. Because of this, Japan declared war on China. This... Show more

30 minutes before they launched their attack to keep it fair. Unfortunately, they declared war late,
so by the time they did it, the attack was already underway. Because of this, the Japanese were
able to blow up almost all of the U.S. defense before they could use it. America suffered heavy
damage from this attack, 20 ships were damaged or destroyed. Over 300 planes were reduced to
ashes. And there were over 3500 casualties. Many of which came from soldiers trapped in ships
while they were sinking. But with all this damage done, Japan didn t destroy the pacific fleet. All
but two ships damaged in the attack were repaired. Luckily for America, two aircraft carriers that
were supposed to be at the harbor weren t. What Japan forgot to destroy was all of the facilities
such as oil storage depots, repair shops, shipyards, and submarine docks. This is a day that will
live in infamy, said Theodore Roosevelt. On this day, America declared war on Japan. Germany
and Italy also declared war on the U.S. So hopefully the U.S. will rebound quickly and will counter
Japan with great force. The American people need to come together. They need to support the
decision to go to war, because America must
Business Operations And New Ideas
The company s managers are frequently busy with business operations and new ideas. Apparently, IT
structures was never appropriated with organizational vision and IT was in an important state of
disorganization.
IT doesn t have reliability in the lines of business. This is a known deficiency and sooner or later
will be addressed in the reconversion of IT.
Business operations are not understood by IT employee. Business unit managers were making IT
decisions based on their current knowledge and needs. The connections of the processes are
incomprehensible to both teams of the organization.

Well organized structure provides business employees with opportunities and how to improve their
skills. First of all, the multidivisional operation needs to provide overall operations appropriate in a
SOA structure. Because, there is no guarantee that SOA will fit to company s existing package. The
managers, especially CIO is in the best position to involve and communicate with employees. The
CIO must hire senior management who can communicate with IT employees and educate them. IT
organizational structures must be centralized, understandable and moderate.
Outline a project selection process for AgCredit to ensure alignment with the enterprise business
vision.
Organizations should be careful and select the projects they decide to continue from between
many opportunities. Apparently, there is no simple decision. The consequences of poor process
and decision could be expensive and irrecoverable. A number of useful projects are existing to
managers liable for measuring possible business needs. AgCredit s CIO must know that his job is
getting harder and must also connect with people at all levels of the organization. New enterprise
ideas must be delivered quickly and directly connected to measures of business development. All of
these developments provide an idea of how the business people and business process work each other
and provide more understandable process which would make business process more vigorous and
useful.

Business Case For Installing Antimicrobial Copper Surfaces
Business Case for Installing Antimicrobial Copper Surfaces in the ICU

Introduction/Background
Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) are infections that are caused by a wide variety of bacteria,
fungi, and viruses during the course of receiving medical treatment or surgical procedures in a health
care facility. Bacterial contamination on various surfaces in the patient s environment, such as door
handles, tables, intravenous (IV) poles, bed rails, or sinks, can be a source of transmission.
Pathogens that cause HAIs including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA),
Acinetobacter spp., vancomycin resistant Enterococcus spp. (VRE), and norovirus can survive on
environmental surfaces for days to weeks. Clostridium difficile (CDI) spores may survive on
surfaces for months. Treating HAIs has become more difficult as antimicrobial resistance has
increased and the number of effective antibiotics has declined. Regular surfaces made of plastic,
stainless steel, coated metal, and wood are quickly re contaminated after cleaning. Studies have
shown that fewer than 50% of hospital room surfaces are adequately cleaned when standard
chemical disinfectants are used. Similarly, inadequate cleaning of portable medical equipment has
also been demonstrated. There is evidence that the risk of hand or glove contamination with
antibiotic resistant organisms is high after contact with the surfaces in a patient s environment.
Furthermore, a lower compliance with
Comparing Ludwig Beethoven And Beethoven s Appassionata...
Both Ludwig Beethoven s Appassionata piano sonata and Franz Liszt s B minor sonata are
recognized as some of the best compositions of the nineteenth century. The complexity and creativity
of these pieces are astonishing. Considering both pieces are sonatas they have some similar aspects,
but they are also very different which can be credited to the brilliant minds who composed them.
These pieces are both masterpieces of their time which is what has made them stand out amongst the
many songs composed during the nineteenth century. In this paper I will touch on the significant
attributes of these pieces and compare their similarities and differences.
The first piece I will introduce is Appassionata by Ludwig Van Beethoven. Appassionata was
composed during a time of many changes in both Beethoven s life and the musical world around
him. By 1800 Beethoven s hearing had deteriorated so much that he was almost completely deaf.
Although this was not something easy to cope with, Beethoven did not let this obstacle hinder his
career. In fact, in many aspects his works flourished, and a new wave of creativity sparked in his
career. Beethoven was not the first to compose a multimovement piece for the piano, but he was the
first to stray from the former expectations of piano sonatas. Beethoven s new sonatas were longer
than most and incorporated dramatic elements. With just one instrument Beethoven was able to
convey so much power and emotion, something that no one at the time
Descriptive Essay About Sparring In Taekwondo
He Was Breathtaking Waking up early on a Saturday to excessively exercise and then getting beaten
up afterward is not everyone s cup of tea. It sure wasn t mine and to this very day, I still have mixed
feelings about sparring in Taekwondo. Sparring is a sport for students to better prepare themselves in
self defense, but also for competition. Light contact was recommended, but at times the pressure gets
the better of the fighter. Accidents frequently occur. I was just starting out in this lung stopping
sport, so neither my mindand body were ready to have the life sucked out of us. I didn t mind
sparring, but when I saw who I was paired with, I might of as well just left the suffocating arena. It
was a hot summer morning and I got ready... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One to my chest, the other went to my throat. After the second blow to my throat, I stopped
immediately. I couldn t breathe. My world went blank and I dropped myself next to my dad on
the bench. I was like an old tree that shakes violently during a storm. My body didn t do anything
at that moment. The whole world stopped dead in its tracks. I was in shock. Tears formed in my eyes.
Three seconds later, I was crying. It felt like my eyes had an endless supply of water. After Master
Ko had called everyone to stop, he turned to Alex and asked what happened. Alex said he honestly
did not know and that I just stopped fighting. Master Ko turned to me and asked the same thing. I
took asthmatic breaths of air as I answered his torturing question. I felt embarrassed for crying and
for stopping in the middle of a fight. My face was beet red. I hated all the eyes that were drilling
holes into me. I could not take much more, so I sat out for the rest of the time.
As my eyes burned from the sweat and tears mixing together, I yelled at myself, I m so pathetic!
How could I just sit here and rest, while everyone is working their butts off!? Dalena, what
happened? Master Ko s voice was warm and soothing. He placed his hand on my shoulder, squeezing
so tight, I could feel my veins suffocating. I was kicked in the throat, sir... I m really sorry! I bowed,
trying to avoid his eyes, afraid of his eyes splicing into my already broken soul. I understand it
Tattoo History
The beginning of the modern history of the tattoo can be dated back to 1769, when the term tattoo
was first introduced into the English language. British explorer, Captain James Cook, had traveled
to Polynesia and observed Tahitians practicing tattowing. In his account, the men and women of
Tahiti painted their bodies by imbedding black color under their skin, in such a manner as to be
indelible... (Perzanowski 2013). Even though Cook s account of the practice was recorded in his
account, the first written reference of the word tattooresides in the journal of Joseph Banks, the
botanist and naturalist who traveled with Cook. It was derived from the Samoan word tatau (Isaacs
2012). From obtaining a very thin and flat piece of bone or shell,... Show more content on

Most prospective tattoo artists learn through first hand experience by an apprenticeship at a specific
shop. They often begin tattooing simple flash designs and progressively develop their artistic skills
for more custom ones. Because these apprentices work under the supervision of a well qualified
tattoo artist, there is a sort of duality and complication that occurs surrounding the creativity of today
s age. The tradition has accepted and incorporated the ever changing icons and trends as time
continues to pass. However, at the same time originality and creativity also continue to be a theme
that is sought after. Even with the development of custom tattooing, traditional themes are still
prevalent in today s tattooing society. The modern and popular interest in tattooing has attracted
numerous artists, some of whom were trained at prestigious art institutes (Velliquette, Murray, and
Creyer 1998). The Tattoo Renaissance has produced a dual creativity between artist and consumer
and tattoos can be viewed as works of art instead of acts of rebellion, as it had an infamous
reputation as. True, these permanent symbols of an individual s self can either be gratifying or
dissatisfying, but the identity of a man or woman who bears ink on their skin is still accurately

Macroeconomics Personal Statement
When I was young, my parents started their business supplying steel to construction firms. They
often talked about their business when we had dinner. Since their business is closely related to the
overall macroeconomic situation, I got a sense about business cycle at an early age. I could judge
whether it is an expansion or recession by their looks and attitudes at dinner. Also, I got a feeling
about how the business could function in the environment of competition before I entered high
school. This childhood experience stimulated my interests in economics. Because of the hope to get
more professional, in depth knowledge about the current economic situation and government s
economic policy, I decided to major in economics in college to further my study. When getting into
Renmin University of China, I was realigned to the major of Labor and Social Security. Since it is
hard to change my major to economics, I applied to transfer to University of Pittsburgh to fulfill my
dream of getting more professional knowledge about economics. It turns out that this experience not
only prepared me in economic knowledge, but improve my ability to analyze problems qualitatively
and quantitatively.
Studying economics is a process of cultivating my logical thinking and the skills to construct
mathematical models simulating the real world. In the course of Macroeconomics, several models
about economic growth were introduced. At first, I was confused by large amounts of economic
variables in

fear of life (100). Pauline has always despised her daughter, when she sees Pecola just after her
birth, she remarks: Head full of pretty hair but Lord she was ugly (98). But she (Pauline) cares for
the infant she takes care of then feels ashamed of her child and abuses her, like attacking her when
she unintentionally spills a blueberry pie at the Fishers. Pauline fails utterly as a motherwhen she
distrusts Pecola s account of the first time her father rapes her. Her disbelief prevents her from
protecting her daughter, who will be sexually assaulted again. Similarly, Pecola s father, Cholly,
who has endured devastating experiences in his life, is incapable of fatherly behavior. He is
neglectful and abusive with his children. As an oppressed
The Two Shopkeepers- Kantian Ethics and Consequentialism...

The Two Shopkeepers
One of the several topics covered in Kant s Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals is the
issued of two shopkeepers. One shopkeeper is honest with his customers in order to maintain a
positive reputation and improve profits. The second one is honest because he thinks it is right and
exercises his respect for the moral law. The first shopkeeper is motivated to be honest by the rewards
of a positive reputation and profit. The second is motivated by respect for morally right action.
Taking these motivations into consideration from the standpoint of Kantian ethics, it is clear which
shopkeeper is acting right. Kant believes that actions that are ... Show more content on

This notion of respect for persons has to do with treating people as having intrinsic value in and
of themselves. The first shopkeeper is only acting to reward himself through the means of his
customers. The fact that he is not rewarding customers with honesty, but complying with the
moral law in order to reward himself with a good reputation and profit makes it so that he is not
acting rightly. The second shopkeeper, however, is acting in accordance with Kant s categorical
imperative. This shopkeeper acts in accordance with the first formulation of universalizability.
Unlike the first, the second shopkeeper is honest because he knows it is morally right. And this
passes the universalizability test since an ideal society would inhabit people who act based on
the sense of right and wrong, according to Kant. The keeper s honesty is also reversible, because
if others in a society acted out of respect for the moral law like he is, everyone would be acting
right towards one another. He complies with the second formulation by his honesty with customers
out of respect for the moral law. He is not only using the treatment of his customers as a means for
honesty, but also as an end respect for the moral law. In other words, being honest with his
customers is not only enabling him to act morally right, but allowing him to be evaluated as
respecting the moral law (Singer 274 275). Now, a
The Positive Effects Of Stress
If you want to conquer the anxiety of life, live in the moment, live in the breath (Ray, 2017). To me,
this quote entails what it means to conquer life. Living in the moment and being truly happy and
stress free has always been an important part of my life. But recently it has not been as easy for me
to manage with school. Getting over stress and anxietyis a big deal to me because I have struggled a
lot with these things over the past year. There are many causes, but I have found that most of them
are personal and anywhere from health related issues, emotional issues, relationships, and major life
changes. Getting over these things will hopefully help my academics, and social life but finding the
causes and the root of the problems are what is most important. Therefore stress, depression, and
anxiety have all had a major impact on my health.
Stress has had a huge impact on my health. The causes are most likely from moving away, change
of jobs, my mom s recent diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, and several deaths of loved
ones. Personally, stress has had a major impact on my health. At times I get stressed and it is
difficult for me to simple everyday tasks. Stress can give me anywhere from a minor headache to
high blood pressure. The causes are now known, but now I need to learn how to improve and have a
positive effect on my life instead of a negative one. Knowing how to cope with my stress levels is
how I have managed to have to limit it on a daily basis.
