Tutorial

The document presents a tutorial on analyzing consumers' load curves connected to power plants, detailing calculations for system reserve, consumed energy, demand factor, average load, load factor, capacity factor, utilization factor, and peak diversity factor for two consumer groups. It includes specific load data and solutions for two scenarios, demonstrating how to calculate energy consumption and load characteristics. The results indicate the performance metrics of the power plant in relation to the consumers' load demands.

Consumers Load Curves

Question (1)
Two consumers groups are connected to a PP of 160 MW rated capacity. The daily load for
each customer is given in the following table:

hours Group # 1 (MW) Group # 2 (MW)

0-5 20 15
6-10 25 20
10-12 40 35
12-18 60 50
18-23 70 60
23-24 40 30

It is required to find out:

a) System Reserve.
b) Consumed Energy.
c) Demand Factor (DF).
d) Average Load (Lav).
e) Load Factor (LF).
f) Capacity Factor (CF).
g) Utilization Factor (UF).
h) Peak Diversity Factor (PDF).

Solution:
The daily hourly loads for combined customers:

hours Load of Group # 1+2 Energy (MWh)

(MW)
0-5 35 5 × 35 = 175
6-10 45 4 × 45 = 180
10-12 75 2 × 75 = 150
12-18 110 6 × 110 = 660
18-23 130 5 × 130 = 650
23-24 70 1 × 70 = 70

a) System Reserve = rated capacity – max load

𝑅 = 𝐶 − 𝐿𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 160 − 130 = 30 𝑀𝑊
b) Consumed Energy
𝐸𝑇 = 175 + 180 + 150 + 660 + 650 + 70 = 1885 𝑀𝑊ℎ/𝑑
c) Demand Factor
Assume connected load = related capacity
𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝑚𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑚𝑢𝑚 𝑑𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑑 130
𝐷𝐹 = = = 0.8125 < 1
𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑛𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑙𝑜𝑎𝑑 160
d) Average Load
𝐸𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑔𝑦 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑢𝑚𝑒𝑑 (𝐸𝑎𝑣 ) 1885
𝐿𝑎𝑣 = = = 78.5416 𝑀𝑊
𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒(𝑖𝑛 𝐻𝑜𝑢𝑟) 24
e) Load Factor
𝐿𝑎𝑣 78.5416
𝐿𝐹 = = = 0.6041
𝐿𝑚𝑎𝑥 130
f) Capacity Factor
𝐿𝑎𝑣 78.5416
𝐶𝐹 = = = 0.4908
𝐶 160

g) Utilization Factor
𝐿𝑚𝑎𝑥 130
𝑈𝐹 = = = 0.8125
𝐶 160
h) Peak Diversity Factor
𝐿𝑚𝑎𝑥1 + 𝐿𝑚𝑎𝑥2 70 + 60
𝐺𝐷𝐹 = = =1
𝐿max (𝐺𝑅𝑂𝑈𝑃#1+2) 130

Question (2)
Two consumers are connected to a PP of 150 MW rated capacity. The daily load for each
customer is given in the following table:

Daily Hours consumer #1 (MW) consumer #2 (MW)

0-5 20 10
5-8 25 20
8-12 40 35
12-18 50 45
18-22 70 60
22-24 50 20

It is required to:
a) Draw the load curve for each consumer and determine the energy consumed by each
one (the area under each curve).
b) Draw the combined load curve for the two consumers and determine the total energy
consumed by the two consumers (the area under this combined curve), and then show
that it is equal to the summation of the two consumers energies in (a).
c) Calculate the UF of the system.
d) Determine the PDF of the system.
