A Review Of The Article Review
Foregrounding/Backgrounding Both of these tools refer to the writer actively drawing attention
either toward or away any given concept. Typically, Calgary Herald journalists gave textual
prominence towards voices and ideas that pushed industry protection and dismissed claims made by
environmentalists. Even throughout my initial reading of the data, emphasis was almost always
placed on the economic costs of climate change policies prior to making mention of the inevitable
environmental consequences. This foregrounding of governmental and industry voices and the
backgrounding of environmental voices is clear in the article published titled Critics Challenge
Emissions Target (Wingrove 2015, May 16). The first person referenced is the... Show more content

If an explanation was given, it omitted the fact that policies are being put into place to prevent the
calamitous effects of global warming. Coverage on the economic costs of climate change
adaptation strategies heavily outweighed writing on the environmental harms that would arise out
of non action. By way of illustration, an article about oil production reads TransCanada Corp. s
Keystone XL pipeline and Enbridge Inc. s Northern Gateway project heading west, have been
bogged down by environmental concerns [...] and the lack of pipelines is a further drag on
investment intentions in the Canadian oil patch (Hussain 2015, April 11). Hussain s article refrains
from explaining why environmentalists are having concerns. Within the news reporting discourse,
one would reasonably expect objective and detailed coverage but in this instance, the author s
choice of words flagrantly drops the plethora of reasons why environmentalists would be concerned
with the actions of big oil. Another headline reads, There may be hope for new pipelines after all
(Thomson 2015, October 15). While these examples may not appear erroneous on the surface, upon
close inspection on the phrasing level, both bogged down and drag carry negative connotations that
frame the protection of the environment as a barrier
The Influences Of Personality And Choice On The Placebo
The Influences of Personality and Choice on the Placebo vs. Nocebo Effects Maria D. Ramirez
Loyola University of California, Riverside Abstract A plethora of research concerning the emergence
of the placebo effect has been conducted in various domains associated with well being (e.g. pain
analgesia, treatment effectiveness, sleep improvement). However, few experiments focusing on the
possible influence that the big five factors of personality Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion,
Agreeableness, and Neuroticism (OCEAN) might have on the emergence of the placebo vs. the
nocebo effect in the context of pain analgesia have been conducted. This proposed study aims to
breach this gap in the literature by addressing how... Show more content on [Link] ...
The identification of the aforementioned personality traits as moderators of the placebo effect is
very important in the development of individually tailored treatment regimens that will help
improve patient treatment adherence and overall treatment effectiveness (Porto, 2011; Jakšić et al.,
2013; Požgain et al., 2014). However, researchers have observed that many of the correlations
found between dispositional personalities traits (e.g. optimism, pessimism, acquiescence, and
absorption) tend to be inconsistent (Morton et al., 2009; Whalley et al., 2008; Kelley et al., 2009;
Geers et al., 2010; Turiano et al., 2012). Not only, has the majority of the research conducted on the
placebo phenomenon focused on the positive aspects of the effect (e.g. pain analgesia) with little
focus placed on the nocebo effect (i.e. negative symptoms attributed to the presence of a placebo
stimuli) but observed inconsistences in the moderating influence of dispositional personality traits
has resulted in disagreements between various researchers concerning the existence of a placebo
personality (Darrgh et al., 2014; Jakšić et al., 2013). This being said, it is vital to identify other,
perhaps more consistent, possible moderators (e.g.
Australian Politics And Its Impact On Social And Economic...
Australian and American politics are both polarised by clashing philosophies between two major
parties dominating the system, however, the United States is faced with a greater political
dichotomy stunting the growth of legislation on social and economic issues. In Australian politics,
these parties are the Australian Labor Partyand the Liberal National Party and in the United States
the Democratic Party and the Republican Party clash. These parties lie on opposite ends of the
traditional political spectrum. The ALP and the Democratic Party both lie on the left, liberal end and
the LNP and the Republican Party and the right, conservative end. While other parties exist in these
states, the two most mainstream parties control legislation... Show more content on [Link] ...
The social problem of immigration has manifested through the treatment of asylum seekers and
refugees in Australia. In the United States immigration has divided citizens as Republican have
advocated tightening border control from Canada and Mexico. Both countries struggle to find a
policy that advocates positively for the citizens of their countries and these individuals coming to a
new country. Economic issues also divide parties and can range from taxation to setting budgets.
Parties must use economics both to protect their citizens and maintain their place in the global
world. Economic issues have the tendencies to stem from social issues. Defence spending is an
economic issue that is highly divisive between political parties in Australia and the United States. No
international definition of military expenditures exists; however, the Stockholm International Peace
Research Institute defines it as all costs incurred as a result of current military activities (Monitoring
Military Expenditures para 1). Australia and the United States both face polarisation between their
two major parties in setting the defence budget. Australia faces a polarisation based on budget setting
and parties perceptions of the essentialness of being prepared to handle being a Western country in

Sexual Harassment is NOT Tolerable Essay
According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) sexual harassment can be
defined as unwelcome sexual advances, wishes for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical
conduct of a sexual nature constitutes sexual harassment when submission to or rejection of this
conduct clearly or completely affects an individual s employment, unreasonably interferes with an
individual s work routine or creates a threatening, antagonistic or unpleasant work environment
(EEOC, 2002). The victim or harasser can either be a man or a woman, and sexual harassmentis not
always targeted to members of the opposite sex. Sufferers of sexual harassment in the place of
work can be subject to fear or anxiety, lower efficiency, a higher level of stress... Show more content

To avoid sexual harassment s expensive penalty and diminish its occurrence, employers need to
recognize and understand both the reason for the harassment and the precise form of power being
abused (UMC, 2007).
According to Goodman (1991), power in sexual harassment has been viewed differently by men
and women. The literature on sexual harassment generally characterizes it as an abuse of either
role or sexual power. From the cases Goodman (1991) mentions in her report, it can be noted that
for men, power comes from official authority, and they view sexual harassers as principally
managers and supervisors. Men acknowledged that co workers could sexually harass one another,
but co worker harassment was mainly seen as a mix up (UMC, 2007). However, women often
distinguish all members of an organization as possible harassers, viewing it can be initiated by any
person who is perceived as having power.
However, it has been claimed that sexual harassment regulations are based on the point of view of
the victim, nearly always a woman, and based almost completely on the feelings of the victim. Many
men have argued that, it is almost impracticable to understand each other s feelings, and many suits
filed for sexual harassment supposed as misunderstandings between the two parties (Goodman,
1991). Paul (2001) agrees that or women to expect respectful treatment in the workplace is utopian,
yet he also
Ethical And Moral Issues Relevant
Background of the Case:
In this case, I saw as a bioethicist that there was a child brought into to hospital saying that the child
had an asthma attack. But the doctor, Dr. Kildaire, checked the child and found out that the child had
burns on the child s chest. She assumes that the burns are due to child abuse. She asked the child, but
the child does not communicate well in English, the doctor assumes he is Vietnamese. The doctor
wants to let the police and Child Protective Services know about this case, but she came to the Ethics
Committee and now it is up to us to make our decision.
Ethical or Moral Issues Relevant in the Case:
Social contract theory does apply to this case in a small variation which is explained by
Kymlicka by, One approach stresses a natural equality of physical power, which makes it
mutually advantageous for people to accept convections that recognize and protect each other s
interests and possessions (17). This would relate to the case because the doctor is trying to
protect the child. The most basic principle is Principles of Bioethics which involves four main
principles, (1) respect the capacity of individuals to choose their own vision of the good life and
act accordingly; (2) foster the interests and happiness of other persons and of society at large; (3)
refrain from harming other persons; and (4) act fairly, distribute benefits and burdens in an
equitable fashion and resolve disputes by means of fair procedures (36 37). This applies to the
Who Attended The Service As Part Of Their Lifestyle
To experience a new religion is eye opening to me and was very interesting to visit and collaborate
with people who attended the service as part of their lifestyle. First of all, I am Native American
and I see that my Navajo traditions and worshiping services has a unique and precise way of
worshiping. Considering I was raised as a Southern Baptist throughout my childhood of going to
Bible camp and youth camps which has gotten me to see that it was the only right way of
worshiping and seeing other religions idolizing other physical pagans which I saw this as wrong.
However, this course was a way to be openminded about other cultures besides my own christian
background. As this course concludes, I fine myself seeing the core roots set back in centuries of all
religion of having similar foundations in all aspects of their history.

As I heard that my dad had connections to a friend, Gordon, who was a Jew and was more than
willing to take me along and experience this new form of worshipping, I began to have thoughts of
their religious people. Their history is unique in many ways of expressing their dedication in extreme
forms of chanting of the Torah. A Jew would have the consciousness so fixed on studying the Torah,
they would have a constant study of His wisdom, God. When, however, they understood Torah study
to be a ritual act that encompasses more than the logical activities involved.

On August 6 of Saturday I attended a Shabbat morning service at Congregation Albert. As

Moral Dilemma Project Examples
Moral Dilemmas Project
Each of the three prominent approaches to moral dilemmas carry with it various aspects with which
I find affinity. For example, generally, each maintain the existence of many absolute moral norms,
meaning that for these norms there are no exceptions or exemptions. Specifically, however, Non
Conflicting Absolutism ( NCA ) highlights the Lord s sovereign rule and transcendence over creation
in arguing that moral norms are birthed from the character and essence of God. For example, Isaiah
55:8 9 (NRSV) says, For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the
Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my
thoughts than your thoughts. Reminding us, ... Show more content on [Link] ...
Paul declares to the Corinthians, No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone.
God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will
also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it (I Cor. 10:13, NASB). Ideal
Absolutist argue that one must choose the lesser of two evils, and as a result in these moral
dilemmas one commits a sin and stands guilty before God however, this sin is pardonable. In
other words, we ve made our beds in sin as humanity and now we must live in it. However, John
and Paul Feinberg right note in their co authored book, Ethics for a Brave New World, Moral
philosophers commonly agree that in assessing moral praise or blame for an action, one must
consider whether the agent acted freely or not. The principle involved is: no one is morally
guilty for failing to do what he could not do or for doing what he could not fail to do [emphasis
added]. That is, moral responsibility presupposes freedom of action. Moral oughts imply that the
agent can do his duty [emphasis added]. As such, guilt would not be imposed when moral conflicts
arise simply because one simply cannot not feasibly obey both. One of the better and simplest
metaphors of this is when two roads intersect, one must yield to the other we refer to this as the
right of way . Feinberg and
Case Study Six-Sigma Methodology
Sokovic et al. (2005) applied basic approach Six Sigma methodology which includes Process
feasibility study, Process planning, Process preparation, Trial production run and Process
quantification. Using this basic approach a new process design was developed for compressor
housing machining process. During the process panning phase the Failure mode and effect
analysis (FMEA) method is widely used. Due to large number of Key process input variables
(KPIV) it becomes difficult to use FMEA method. To overcome this problem tools like Process
mapping and Cause and effect matrix were applied to reduce number of KPIV to minimum. With
this methodology a new process was developed using new approach. Comparison of old and
modified process flow map had shown that time spent in developing modified... Show more content

of quality by trimming down defect level those are crucial to customers. Implementation of Six
Sigma methodology helps to improve levels of overall customers satisfaction through improvements
made to the working environment. Discussing the case of implementation the authors in the end
concluded that to implement such projects in SMEs, the top management must designate
dedicated trained personnel as team members who further provide trainings to workers included
in the project in a hierarchical manner. This type of program can be named as Internal Training

new Six Sigma projects step by step. This type of program helps in render savings and upgrade staff

What Is Raskolnikov Guilt
When first reading Crime and Punishment, I had little understanding of Raskolnikov s reason of
confession and his feeling of guilt in the novel. Because, I thought that Raskolnikov truly believed
in his own theory that he is an extraordinary man. I also believed that he was a cold lifeless person
for killing a old lady just because he thought she was vermin. But, after reading the novela group
presented to the class the theme of guilt and why it was so important to the novel; I soon came to
the realization that the novel heavily shows that guilt leads to suffering which means your suffering
can lead to your death. After listening to this group present their idea of guilt I reflected on where
else guilt led to suffering and one moment that
Meet Up Research Paper
Back in June I got a text from Ruby creator of Brown Girl With A Camera, asking if I would help
her plan a meetup in NYC in August. I jumped at the chance because I m all about helping and
supporting fellow entrepreneurs. I want us all to win! Plus, Brown Girl With A Camera s
mission is awesome read about it here. August is always a busy month for me. Especially this
august I had two weddings and my 4 year wedding anniversary. The only date I had available was
August 29th. Ruby and I agreed on a date. I got off the phone and got right to work. I ve hosted
art exhibits, women s empowerment events but never a meet up. This meet up was an excellent
opportunity not only for the photographers models attending to build their portfolios but also an a
chance for everyone to network, build friendships and cultivate a sisterhood. I ve said it once
before and I will say it again. Photography is mainly dominated by males. Anytime I can get
together with a group female photographers, share knowledge, experiences with women that are
going through the same things that I am and just vibe it s a good time. My goal was for everyone
to leave the meet up confident, inspired and hopefully with new skills. YUP.... this meet up was
going to be awesome! Once I had my vision for the meet up down. I called two of my favorite make
up artists Nicole Summers of Nozzie by Nicole Make Up Artistry and Melisa Martin of Mema
