INVERSIONS
PRACTICE PROGRESSIONS
ALL THE PROGRESSIONS
FROM SECTION 1
WITH CHORD INVERSIONS
YOU DON’T HAVE TO USE ALL THESE INVERSIONS 3-10
The practice progressions in this book are the same progressions from
section 1 with added inversions
I have given inversions that I personally feel work well for the progressions
but there are no absolute rules for what inversions to use - ultimately the
choice is YOURS and you don’t HAVE to use all the inversions
LEARNING INVERSIONS TAKES TIME
It’s hard enough for a beginner to learn all the Root position chords let alone
all the inversions for these chords. So don’t worry if you struggle with
inversions
It’s perfectly fine to just add in the easier ones when you practice the
progressions
You could start with F middle, G backwards, Em middle, C middle
and then later you add a few inversions with black keys like Eb middle or Ab
backwards and when you know them really well you can add a few more
KEEP IN MIND THAT INVERSIONS WILL MAKE PIANO MUCH EASIER
After you have learned inversions you will realise how much easier it is to
change chords compared to always using root position chords
Jumping from one root position chord to another takes a LOT of effort and
doesn’t always sound the best!
With inversions you can often change chords by just moving ONE finger
So learning inversions is WORTH THE EFFORT :-)
INVERSIONS AND CHORD WEBSITES 3-11
Keep in mind that when you are sourcing chords and lyrics from websites like
ultimate-guitar you WON’T be shown any inversions
Even if the site gives little keyboard diagrams showing the chords in the song
they will just be the root position chords

NO
I don’t think there has ever been an online resource that shows you every
inversion for every song - until Pianoforall :-)
Do your best to learn these inversions - you’ll thank me later :-)
3-12
Before we start..
At the end of this section/book I have
created ‘all-in-one’ exercises for
practicing your chords and inversions
(based on something called the ‘circle of fifths’)
I didn’t put them at the start because they
take time to learn and you may feel more
inclined to learn through actual songs
But if you are the type who prefers a good
exercise routine then feel free to skip ahead and
try them - and print out the pages for daily practice
then make your way back to here and we can start
the popular song practice progressions
Decisions decisions…. :-)
