ADVANCED UNIT 5 ASSESSMENT

READING
Evening chess club

Faced with a decline in membership of the Chess Club, especially among younger members, we
believe that advertising is essential if it is to survive. The campaign should highlight the following
practical details. Firstly, the club is easily accessible by car or public transport. Secondly, the
membership is affordable for everyone, with discounts available for the elderly and students. Thirdly,
this is a family club and parents are encouraged to bring their children. Advertising literature should
also highlight the following key selling points.

1 Social interaction

Although online chess has become increasingly popular, meeting fellow players face-to-face adds an
extra dimension. Potential members need to be aware that there is an on-site coffee shop. Regular
tournaments stimulate friendly competition, allowing members to meet players from different clubs.
If sufficient interest is generated by an advertising campaign, there might be an opportunity to widen
the scope of the club. It is hoped that in the future it will be possible for members to participate in
weekend tournaments at an international level.

2 Mental health benefits

Having read the latest medical research, we know that chess improves memory and concentration.
Players need to focus not only on their own strategy but also on anticipating their opponent’s moves.
Studies have shown that chess may even offset the risks of diseases such as Alzheimer’s in older
players. Finally, chess is excellent at stress reduction. Given that this is an evening club, it could be
promoted as the perfect way to unwind after a hard day’s work.

3 Skills development

In addition to the above benefits, chess promotes creativity, as players seek to outwit each other.
Players develop problem-solving skills, giving them the capacity to foresee the consequences of their
actions. Chess also develops social skills among younger players, such as having respect for their
opponent. Studies have suggested that regular participation in a hobby such as chess can improve
ability at maths as well as overall performance at school.

ADVANCED UNIT 5 ASSESSMENT

I recommend that separate flyers be targeted at teachers and parents in the area, drawing particular
attention to these advantages.

I recommend that the council invest in further advertising to promote the club. The club would
provide local people with an enjoyable evening activity to complement the area’s existing sports and
social programmes. Increased membership would bring innumerable benefits to the community,
raising much-needed additional revenue for the council’s leisure programme.

5 Read the proposal. Choose True or False.

1 The proposal says that club membership has been falling to the extent that without an advertising
campaign, it may not continue to exist.

True / False

2 The proposal says that the club hopes its members will be able to take part in online tournaments
with players from other countries.

True / False

3 The proposal suggests that the health benefits of playing chess apply mainly to older people.

True / False

4 The proposal suggests that the benefits of the skills which chess develops apply to younger people,
teachers and parents alike.

True / False

5 It seems that the club is organized or sponsored by the local community council.
