Form 4 Chem Lab 2

The document outlines a laboratory experiment on osmosis using potato strips placed in different solutions (pure water, sugar solution, and salt solution). It details the aim, apparatus, procedure, results, and observations, as well as discussions on osmosis and the effects of different solutions on potato strip dimensions. The experiment aims to illustrate the principles of osmosis and its practical applications.

LAB # 2 DATE:

TOPIC: Osmosis SKILL: ORR

AIM: To observe osmosis in potato strips

APPARATUS & MATERIALS:

Beakers

Ruler

Knife

Forceps

Water

Salt

Sugar

Measuring cylinder

PROCEDURE:

(1) Wash and dry the apparatus before use.

(2) Fill three beakers with 50cm3 of water and label A, B, C respectively.
(3) Add 15g of sugar to beaker B and stir until dissolved.
(4) Add 15g of salt to beaker C and stir until dissolved.
(5) Cut three strips from the potato, each measuring 4cm in length and 1cm in width.
(6) Measure each of the potato strip and record the measurements and observations in the
table.
(7) Place the potato strips into beakers A, B, C and leave for 24 hours.
(8) After 24 hours, remove the strips from each beaker and take their measurements again.
(9) Record the measurements and observations in the table before and after the potato strips
were placed into the beakers.

DISCUSSION:

Define osmosis.

Briefly describe how semi-permeable membranes only allow some molecules such as water and
certain solutes to pass through and enter the cell.

Explain the results obtained. Why did the potato strip in beaker A increase in size/swell and
become turgid.

Why did the potato strip in beaker B decrease in size and become flaccid?

Why did the potato strip in beaker C decrease in size and become flaccid?

REFLECTION:

What did you learn from the experiment.

How can you apply what you learnt to everyday life. (e.g to preserve fruits and vegetables)
