WHAT IS AN INVITATION?
■ Invitation is a written communication to invite people to an event/programme.
■ It should answer the questions-
– Who is inviting?
– Who is being invited?
– For what?
– When, where, at what time?
■ Two types:
– Card Type: to be sent to many people
– Letter Type: to be sent to an individual
■ Formal Letter Type: to be sent to an official or dignitary
■ Informal Letter Type: to be sent to a friend or relative
■ An invitation may also have a reply by the invitee.
GUIDELINES TO WRITING CARD TYPE INVITATION
■ Write the name of the host/person or persons who are extending the invitation on
the top.
■ This is followed by “cordially invites/invite…to…..(name of the event)”.
■ Then mention the date, time and venue (on, at, at) of the event.
■ After this, mention the Chief Guest in case of a school function etc.
■ Left hand corner, at the bottom, write the phone number under RSVP.
■ Right hand corner, at the bottom, write an instruction for the invitee.
POINTS TO REMEMBER
■ Card type invitation is one sentence.
■ Use central alignment.
■ Use formal language.
■ Write in third person and simple present tense.
■ Don’t use personal pronouns.
■ The invitation should have visual appeal

GUIDELINES TO WRITING LETTER TYPE INVITATION

▪ It is written when the invitation is extended to an individual.


▪ It is to be written in the form of a letter
• Formal Letter in case of formal invitation
• Informal Letter in case of friend or relative
▪ Use of first and second persons is permissible.
▪ Formal tone has to be used in formal invitation.
