4A Math Pentagons

The document outlines a lesson plan for teaching students about polygons with five or more sides, including objectives, subject matter, methodology, and evaluation. It incorporates activities such as group work using toothpicks and colored paper to create polygon shapes, along with a review of polygon types and characteristics. The lesson aims to enhance understanding of polygons through direct instruction and hands-on activities.

4A’s LESSON PLAN

IN MATH
Visualizes, names, and describes polygons with 5 or more
sides
I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard
Demonstrates understanding of polygons, circles, and solid figures.
B. Performance Standard
Is able to construct and describe polygons, circles, and solid figures.
C. Learning Competencies
Visualizes, names, describes and draws polygons with 5 or more sides.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

a) Topic - Visualizes, names, and describes polygons with 5 or more sides

b) Reference – [Link]
polygons-with-5-or-more-sides/

c) Materials –Laptop, Scotch tape, Bond paper, Projector, Colored paper,

Toothpicks

d) Subject Integration – English, ICT

e) Teaching method: direct instruction

III. METHODOLOGY
Teacher’s activity Pupil’s activity

Everyone please stand-up and let’s have a

prayer (Pupil’s stand-up)

Good morning class - Good-morning sir

Who are absent for today? - None sir

If none, well that’s good to know

That your perfect attendance.

1. REVIEW

Before we start our class for today - Yes sir

Please settle down and be attentive,
Is that okay?

So, who can remember about our topic last - Our topic was different
meeting? types of polygons

Yes, very good! And what have you learned

about that topic? - Square or quarilateral
Give at least two types of polygons - Triangle

Very well said, now what do you think is the

importance of identifying what is a polygon - it's a foundational concept in
geometry and mathematics,
crucial for understanding shapes,
2. MOTIVATION patterns, and the world around
us, and it provides a basis for
more complex geometric
concepts and applications
So, class I have here a picture,
What you are going to do is tell
Me the number of sides this polygon have.

1. Pentagon

- five sides

2. Hexagon

- six sides

3. Heptagon

- seven sides

4. Octagon

- eight sides
5. Nonagon

- nine sides

All of your answers are correct, the pictures you

have seen are the examples of our lesson for
today, But before that let’s have this first

3. ACTIVITY

 Pre-activity
Now class I will be grouping you into two groups
and I will be giving you one bond paper each But
before we start out the activity we have a rubric - Yes sir
to follow.

RUBRICS
CATEGORY 10 Pts 5 Pts
DELIVERY Voice is clear Sometimes
and the voice is
understandable clear and

So, count 1-2 and then go to your group and

cooperate, am I understood?
- Yes sir
GROUP 1
Directions: I have an activity for this
morning entitled "The shape you pick with
Toothpicks”, each student will receive
toothpicks. Make 5 different
polygon shapes with 5 or more sides and
angles as they can using the toothpicks.

1.
2.
3. 1.5 angles and 5 sides
4. 2. 6 angles and 6 sides
5. 3. 7 angles and 7 sides
4. 8 angles and 8 sides
5. 9 angles and 9 sides
GROUP 2
I have an activity for this morning entitled
Snip, Shape and Design”, Cut and create
five different polygon shapes using colored
paper, paste it on the bond paper, and
discuss the number of sides each polygon
has in class.

1.
2.
3.
4. 1.12 side
5. 2. 11 sides
3. 10 sides
4. 9 sides
5. 8 sides

 Activity on Proper
Group 1
Draw each shape in a bond paper and
list the number of sides and number
of angles

Group 2
Paste each shape in a bondpaper

 Post Activity
Each group will choose their representative
or reporter to present their answers in class.
4. ANALYSIS
What you have performed is the example of
Describing polygons with 5 or more sides

What is a polygon?

A Polygon is a closed figure made up of line

segments (not curves) in a two-
dimensional
plane. Polygon is the combination of two
words, i.e. poly (means many) and gon
(means sides).
A minimum of threeline segments is
required
to connect end to end, to make a closed
Figure.

What are the 2 types of polygons?

Regular Polygon

If all the sides and interior angles of the

polygon are equal, then it is known as
a regular polygon. The examples of regular
polygons are square, equilateral triangle,
etc.

Irregular Polygon

If all the sides and the interior angles of the

polygon are of different measure, then it is
known as an irregular polygon. This means
that either the sides are of different
lengths or
the angles are different, which is sufficient
for
a polygon to be said to be irregular. For
example, a scalene triangle, a rectangle, a
kite, etc
Three-sided polygon is called a triangle.

A four-sided polygon is called a

quadrilateral.

A five-sided polygon is called a pentagon.

A six-sided polygon is called a hexagon.

A seven-sided polygon is called a

heptagon.

An eight-sided polygon is called an

octagon.

A nine-sided polygon is called a nonagon.

A ten-sided polygon is called a decagon.

Additional for polygon are:

11-sided polygon-undecagon

12-sided polygon-dodecagon
5. ABSTRACTION

So again what is a polygon?

Yes alvie - A Polygon is a closed figure

made up of line
segments (not curves) in a
two-dimensional
plane. Polygon is the
combination of two
words, i.e. poly (means
many) and gon
(means sides).
A minimum of three-line
segments is required
to connect end to end, to
make a closed
figure.

Very well said!

Now what are the two types of polygons

Yes shenalyn
- Regular Polygon

Very good!

Now what are the different shapes

-Three-sided polygon is
Yes shenalyn called a triangle.

Yes john paul -A four-sided polygon is

called a quadrilateral.
Yes angeli
-A five-sided polygon is
Yes jenalyn called a pentagon.

Yes ernesto -A six-sided polygon is called

a hexagon.
Yes leander
-A seven-sided polygon is
Yes joelmer called a heptagon.

Yes arlene -An eight-sided polygon is

called an octagon.
Yes elieza
-A nine-sided polygon is
Very good! Lets give ourselves a strong clap. called a nonagon.

-A ten-sided polygon is
called a decagon.

6. APPLICATION
So, we have here pictures, to see if you
really understand our lesson.
Let’s name what types of polygons they
are.

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

6.
7.

8.

Are you done class?

Very good! now lets give ourselves a super clap

IV. EVALUATION
On a piece of paper, answer the following.
Directions: Draw the shape on what is asked in the number below.
1. Pentagon
2. Hexagon
3. Octagon
4. Nonagon
5. Heptagon
