My Journey in Criminology at Cagayan State University
I chose criminology because it aligns with my desire to work in law enforcement.
Choosing a college course is a decision that shapes one's future. For me, criminology was not
merely an academic pursuit but a calling—a deep-seated interest in justice and law enforcement.
My choice was influenced by a combination of passion and practicality. Growing up, I admired
the discipline and courage of law enforcement professionals. Their commitment to maintaining
peace and order inspired me. Additionally, my family played a significant role in my decision.
While they never pressured me into criminology, their encouragement and support reinforced my
belief that this field could be both meaningful and fulfilling. Career prospects also guided my
choice, as criminology offers diverse opportunities in policing, forensic investigation, and legal
services.
When I first entered the course, I held many expectations—some realistic, others shaped
by media portrayals of crime and justice. I anticipated rigorous training, analytical coursework,
and field experiences that would prepare me for the challenges of criminal justice. However, I
also harbored fears. The complexity of criminological theories, the physical demands of training,
and the moral weight of justice all seemed daunting. I worried about whether I could keep up
with the expectations of the program. Looking back now, I can say that my expectations were
both met and challenged. The academic rigor was as demanding as I had imagined, yet it was
also deeply enriching. Contrary to my fears, I found support among peers and professors who
made learning more engaging and manageable.
Studying at Cagayan State University was a defining chapter in my life. CSU provided an
environment that fostered both academic growth and personal development. One of the greatest
challenges I encountered was adapting to the discipline required in criminology. Courses like
criminal law and forensic science demanded not only memorization but also critical thinking.
Physical training was another hurdle, as it tested my endurance and resilience. However, these
challenges shaped my perseverance. Among the most memorable moments were practical
exercises in forensic analysis and crime scene investigation. These hands-on experiences
solidified my understanding of criminology beyond textbooks. The guidance of certain
professors also stood out. Their real-world insights and dedication to student learning inspired
me to pursue excellence in my studies.
CSU has profoundly shaped both my academic and personal life. Beyond the technical
knowledge, the university instilled values of integrity, discipline, and social responsibility. One
of the most important lessons I learned was that justice is not merely about laws and enforcement
—it is about fairness, ethics, and the pursuit of truth. This realization came from a professor
whose passion for criminology was contagious. He emphasized that every case, every
investigation, and every legal proceeding carries human consequences. His lessons encouraged
me to approach criminology not just as a profession but as a moral duty. Additionally, friendships
at CSU played a crucial role in my growth. Conversations with classmates broadened my
perspectives on law, justice, and societal issues.
As I reflect on my time at CSU, I am grateful for the journey that has shaped my
aspirations and understanding of criminology. The university provided me with the tools to
navigate the complexities of law enforcement while reinforcing the importance of empathy and
ethical leadership. Looking forward, I aim to apply these lessons in whichever path I take—
whether in investigation, policy-making, or advocacy. CSU did not just educate me; it molded
me into someone who values knowledge, justice, and the responsibility that comes with serving
society.
Beyond the lectures and training, the friendships I built made this journey even more
meaningful. Late-night study sessions, group discussions, and shared struggles with deadlines
forged bonds that I will carry with me beyond university life. My peers not only became study
partners but also sources of motivation and support during challenging times. The sense of
camaraderie kept me going, reminding me that we are all working toward a common goal—to
serve and protect. Every challenge I faced, every lesson I learned, and every experience I
embraced has shaped me into a more determined and compassionate individual. As I step
forward into the professional world, I carry with me not just knowledge and skills, but a deep
understanding of what it means to uphold justice with integrity, resilience, and heart.
