Year-over job declines offset by health care and government gains
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Los Angeles County remained unchanged over
the month at 6.0 percent in February 2025 from a revised 6.0 percent in January 2025, and was
above the rate of 5.4 percent a year ago. Civilian employment declined by 13,000 to 4,796,000
in February 2025, and unemployment decreased by 3,000 to 304,000 over the month. The
civilian labor force decreased 16,000 over the month to 5,100,000 in February 2025. All the
above figures are seasonally adjusted. The unadjusted unemployment rate for the county was
5.9 percent in February 2025.
The California seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.4 percent in February 2025, 5.4
percent in January 2025, and 5.1 percent a year ago in February 2024. The comparable
estimates for the nation were 4.1 percent in February 2025, 4.0 percent in January 2025, and
3.9 percent a year ago.
Between January 2025 and February 2025, total nonfarm employment in Los Angeles County
increased by 28,700 to 4,582,900.
Private education and health services (up 18,300) led the job advancements and accounted
for 64 percent of the total nonfarm increase. Health care and social assistance (up 9,300)
accounted for over half of the job addition. Private educational services (up 9,000) made up
the remaining growth and was driven up, in part, by private colleges, universities, and
professional schools (up 3,500).
Information, an industry that is 26 percent below pre-pandemic levels, added 8,600 jobs.
Motion picture and sound recording industries (up 8,600), which make up 59 percent of the
industry employment, accounted for the entire increase and reported their largest job
additions in twelve months.
Leisure and hospitality reported an advance of 4,100 jobs. The majority of the gain was
reported in accommodation and food services (up 2,500). An addition of 2,200 jobs in food
services and drinking places, an industry that has posted job declines in five of the last
twelve months and remains below pre-pandemic levels, drove up the industry totals.
Every remaining industry sector, except professional and business services (up 3,600),
other services (up 1,100), and manufacturing (unchanged), reported month-over job
declines. The largest reductions were seen in trade, transportation, and utilities (down
5,000) and centered around retail trade (down 4,300). Government reported a loss of 900
jobs, financial activities lost 700 jobs, construction dropped 300 jobs, and mining and
logging was down 100.
Between February 2024 and February 2025, total nonfarm employment in Los Angeles
County decreased by 3,200, or 0.1 percent.
Payroll increases in private education and health services (up 48,000) led the year-over
employment development. Rising health care demands helped drive up year-over job levels
in health care and social assistance (up 39,200). Private educational services contributed an
additional 8,800 jobs to the gain.
Government payrolls reported an increase of 9,100 jobs. Local government drove up
employment by 8,500 jobs. Almost half of the sector growth was concentrated in local
government educational services (up 4,300), which accounted for 47 percent of the overall
increase in government. State government contributed an additional 800 jobs, but the
overall gains were offset by a decline of 200 jobs in federal government.
Every remaining industry sector reported year-over-year reductions for a total decline of
60,300 jobs. The job losses were led by a drop of 14,800 in manufacturing. Other notable
job reductions were reported in leisure and hospitality (down 9,300), professional and
business services (8,800), financial activities (down 8,700), and construction (down 8,200).
