Statement of Purpose
Name: Sayan Das
Program: Pre-Masters in Public Health leading to Master of Public Health in Global Public Health
University: Anglia Ruskin University, United Kingdom
I am Sayan Das, a 28-year-old from Kolkata, West Bengal, India, and the only child in a close-knit
nuclear family. Growing up in a nurturing environment, I was instilled with the values of discipline,
responsibility, and academic dedication. My diverse interests—including gardening, reading, cooking,
and playing football and cricket—have not only enriched my personal life but also helped shape
essential life skills such as teamwork, focus, and time management.
Academic and Professional Background
My academic journey began under the CBSE curriculum. I completed my secondary education at
Hariyana Vidya Mandir and pursued my higher secondary studies at Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial
Senior Secondary School, both located in Kolkata. I later earned my Bachelor of Science degree from
Vidyasagar College, affiliated with the University of Calcutta, where I specialized in Zoology, Botany,
and Physiology. My undergraduate education developed a solid foundation in biological sciences and
sparked my early interest in healthcare and life sciences.
Upon graduation, I began my professional career in the IT sector as a Web Consultant at Vap
Technology. With consistent performance and adaptability, I was promoted to Senior Web
Consultant. However, the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a one-year career break, during which I had
the opportunity to reflect on my long-term goals. Post-pandemic, I transitioned into the
pharmaceutical and healthcare industry—first with EIPW and currently at Jubilant Generics as a
Territory Manager. This transition exposed me to healthcare challenges on the ground, especially in
underserved communities. These real-world insights deeply influenced my desire to pursue a career
in public health.
Why the United Kingdom?
The United Kingdom is globally recognized for its academic excellence and leadership in public health
research and practice. UK universities offer advanced curricula, world-class research opportunities,
and strong industry connections, which are essential for shaping future-ready professionals.
Furthermore, the UK’s rich cultural diversity and inclusive environment provide a dynamic platform
for international students to broaden their perspectives—both academically and personally. The
relatively shorter duration of master’s programs, combined with their intensity and quality, makes
studying in the UK a strategic and efficient choice for learners like me.
Why Anglia Ruskin University?
Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) stands out for its commitment to employability, innovation, and
practical learning. The university’s strong emphasis on real-world experience, along with modern
facilities and academic support, ensures a well-rounded and enriching educational journey. What
particularly draws me to ARU is its forward-thinking approach to public health education—focused
on global issues, community engagement, and sustainable healthcare solutions. The university’s
partnerships with public health organizations and on-going research projects offer valuable exposure
that aligns perfectly with my career goals. ARU’s student-centric learning environment will help me
adapt seamlessly to postgraduate study while building the critical thinking and leadership skills
essential in today’s global health landscape.
Why Public Health and This Course?
Public health is a powerful, interdisciplinary field dedicated to improving lives on a population level.
My interest in public health stems from first-hand experience witnessing disparities in healthcare
access and outcomes in India. The COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted the urgent need for
resilient public health systems, proactive policy-making, and educated leaders in the sector.
The Pre-Masters in Public Health program at ARU is the ideal pathway for me to strengthen my
academic foundation and prepare for the Master of Public Health in Global Public Health. The course
structure covers essential areas such as epidemiology, health promotion, global health systems, and
health policy—offering both a local and international perspective. It also provides opportunities for
collaborative learning and community-based research, equipping me with the skills and knowledge
to address complex health challenges effectively.
Career Goals and Long-Term Vision
After completing my education, I intend to return to India and contribute to the advancement of the
nation’s healthcare system. As the only child of my family, I also have personal responsibilities toward
my parents, which strongly influence my decision to return home. Professionally, I aim to work with
public health organizations, government bodies, NGOs, or international healthcare consultancies to
improve healthcare access, efficiency, and equity. My goal is to bring global insights to local settings
—designing evidence-based health interventions, influencing public policy, and helping to develop
community health programs that address both urban and rural needs.
In the long term, I aspire to hold leadership roles in national or international public health
organizations, contributing to sustainable health outcomes and advocating for policies that prioritize
prevention, education, and equality in healthcare.
Pursuing my postgraduate studies at Anglia Ruskin University is not just a professional milestone—it
is the fulfilment of a lifelong dream to be part of the global healthcare movement. I am confident
that the Pre-Masters and subsequent Master’s program in Global Public Health at ARU will provide
the perfect academic platform, practical tools, and supportive environment needed to achieve my
aspirations and make a meaningful contribution to public health in India and beyond.
Thank you for considering my application.
Sincerely,
Sayan Das
