BAMBOO CRAFT
Bamboos belong to the grass family. Their stems or culms are
cylindrical, generally hallow, and separated by partitions or joints called
nodes. The space in between the nodes is called internode.
KINDS OF BAMBOO
1. Kawayang tinik – it is the only species of bamboo in the Philippines. It
is best for building purposes because of its strength. It is also used in
making baskets, hats, shuttles, and paper pulp.
2. Bagto – its internodes are good materials for chairs, sawali or bamboo
matting, flutes, weaving loom, and paper.
3. Gigantochloa – it is used for water pipes, fish traps, and as a wall for
houses.
4. Dendrocalamus species – it is used for construction purposes, vehicles,
shafts and ropes.
5. Kawayang China – the clumps of these bamboos are usually from one
to three meters in height, the culms are up to three centimeters in
diameter.
6. Buho – its stems are auricled and hairy. It is used for fish traps, for
carrying water, and other purposes.
7. Bikal – this is a climbing species characterized by having its flower in
dense.
8. Bayug – This species is quite tall, graceful, with slender stalks forming
large clump.
9. Zigzag bamboo – this species is an evergreen stem.
10. Dwarfed bamboo – is a small shrubby species.
TOOLS AND MATERIALS USED IN BAMBOO CRAFT
1. Bolo – used to cut wood and similar materials.
2. Cross-cut saw – used for cutting bamboos across the grain.
3. Coping saw – used for cutting exterior and interior curves on bamboo
strips.
4. Dovetail saw – used to cut thin strips of bamboo and make small wood
joints.
5. Triangular file – used for smoothening out the rough edges of bamboo.
6. Jackplane – used for smoothening out the surface of bamboos and
sticks.
7. Gouge – used to cut curves, complex shapes, and others.
8. Spokeshave – used to clean curved edges of bamboos.
9. Claw hammer – used for driving and pulling out nails.
10. Mallet – known as a wooden hammer. It is used for driving a
chisel.
11. Pliers – used for cutting and bending wires.
12. Hand drill – used to bore holes.
13. Pocket knife – used for scraping and cleaning bamboo materials.
FINISHING MATERIALS
Finishing is the last step in the completion of a project. It is the method
of beautifying the project.
1. Sandpaper – used to smoothen the rough surfaces, edges, or ends of
articles made from bamboo.
2. Shellac – a resinous substance that comes from the excreta of the lac
bug. It is a good adhesive for projects because it is easy to apply and
dries fast.
3. Varnish – it is one of the finest finishing for articles and it can be
spread thinly to the projects.
4. Paint – it is composed of pigments, vehicle, thinner, and drier and it
comes in different colors.
5. Lacquer – it is a synthetic product that is largely used for finishing
manufactured articles. It helps retain the natural color of the material.
WEAVING – to form by interlacing strands.
It deals with the weaving of hats, mats, rugs, baskets, and other
products from calasiao, buri, raffia, buntal, bamboo, pandan, balilihan,
sabuntan, and others.
RATTAN
Kinds of rattan
1. Palasan – with big stems and are usually used in framing chairs,
partitions, tables, sofa set, and center tables.
2. Sica – with small stems and are used for constructing craft articles.
FIBER – are the threadlike substances extracted from mature abaca.
