ORCAFLEX INSTALLATION GUIDE
This guide is intended for anyone installing OrcaFlex, either for the first time or as an
upgrade. All the information you need may well be in the first two sections (‘Before
You Start’ and ‘Interactive Installation’); those with more complex requirements may
find the remainder of the guide to be useful.
BEFORE YOU START
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
OrcaFlex requires Windows 8 or later, either 32- or 64-bit.
ADMINISTRATOR RIGHTS
The installation requires administrator privileges. You will need to either install from an
account with admin privileges or have the details of such an account.
INSTALLATION FOLDER
If you already have an earlier version of OrcaFlex installed, and you choose to retain
that version as well as the new installation, you must not install the new version in the
same folder as the existing one. If you choose the default installation folders, this will
not happen.
INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION
The most straightforward way to install OrcaFlex is to simply run the program
[Link]. You will be presented with a standard series of dialogs which allow you to
modify the default installation folder and installed features.
Note that if an earlier version of OrcaFlex is detected on your computer it will, by
default, be removed. To retain it, uncheck the “Remove all previous versions” box on
the first dialog.
SILENT INSTALLATION
You can perform a silent installation, in which OrcaFlex will use the default values for
any options presented, by running [Link] with the parameter /q.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
[Link] acts as a bootstrapper – it checks for previously-installed versions of
OrcaFlex, and determines the processor architecture, then calls Windows Installer with
the appropriate arguments.
This front-end is required because the installation may be required to perform a minor
upgrade (eg from 9.6a to 9.6b): in this case the command line required to start the
installer differs from that for a brand new install or a major upgrade (eg 9.6x to 9.7x).
We also use [Link] to determine whether Windows is a 32-bit or a 64-bit edition,
and choose the MSI to install accordingly – [Link] for 32-bit systems,
[Link] for 64 bits.
Installation [Link] 1
Orcina
[Link] has been set up to be transparent in action. It launches [Link] (with
the appropriate parameters if it is a minor upgrade) in the usual way, so you may
choose which features to install and to what location.
If no earlier minor version of OrcaFlex is found, MsiExec is invoked with the parameter
/i followed by the OrcaFlex MSI filename ([Link] or [Link]): this is
simply a standard new installation and the usual sequence of dialogs will be presented.
If an earlier minor version is found, the command line passed to MsiExec is
"VSINSTALLEDVER=<installed version number> REINSTALLMODE=vomus
REINSTALL=All /i <MSI filename>”
In this case, Installer will start up in the usual way, but will simply (on confirmation)
upgrade the existing version of OrcaFlex to the new one, retaining the features which
were chosen originally.
[Link] then goes on to apply the DirectX updater [Link] in the DirectX
folder. This is a Microsoft utility which will update DirectX on your machine if
necessary, for use by the OrcaFlex shaded graphics facility.
This behaviour is set out in the [Link] file (found at the same location as
[Link]), which you may tailor to your own requirements: more details of [Link]
may be found at [Link] “[Link]” is simply an alias for
[Link].
Alternatively, if you wish to repackage the installation you may choose to bypass
[Link] and work directly with the OrcaFlex MSI files. You will need to know the
bitness of the target OS: the 64-bit MSI cannot be installed on 32-bit Windows, nor the
32-bit MSI on 64-bit Windows. You must also ensure that [Link] is run (with
the parameter /silent if that is what you require).
