A DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN DISASTER READINESS AND RISK REDUCTION
By: Liezel Jane P. Arante
I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, at least 80% of the students:
demonstrates understanding of disaster, hazard and vulnerability;
can proposed an action that would eliminate or reduce vulnerability and disaster in a situation;
recognize the importance of awareness and preparedness to disaster.
II. Subject Matter:
A. Topic: Hazard, Exposure, Vulnerability, Capacity
B. References: Chapter 2: Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction, pp. 14-22,
DRRR Module.
C. Materials: Pictures, Visual Aids, Chalk
D. Strategies/Approach: Cooperative Learning
III. Procedures
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY
A. Preparation
a. Cleaning of Classroom
“Kindly pick up pieces of papers! (The students’ pick-up pieces of papers)
b. Prayer
“May I request everyone to please stand for the (The students stand)
opening prayer.” All Students: “Our father who art in heaven, holy be your name,
your kingdom come your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our sins as we
forgive those who sins against us. Do not bring us to the test but
deliver us from evil. Amen.
All Students: “Good afternoon Ma’am Liezel!”
c. Greetings
Good afternoon Class! (The students take their seats)
“You may now take your seats.”
All Students: “None Ma’am!”
d. Checking of Attendance
“Who is absent today?”
“Oh, that’s great! Very good Class!
B. Motivation
“I have here sets of pictures. You will guess the word
pertaining to this picture by filling the missing letter.
“Are you ready?”
. All Students: “Yes, Ma’am!”

“Do you have any idea about the relevance of the words to
our lesson for today?”
Annabel: “I think our lesson for today is about Disaster, Hazard
and Vulnerability Ma’am!”
C. Lesson Proper
“Very good! Our lesson for today is about Hazard,
Exposure, Vulnerability and Capacity.”
Now, class, let us first define the word “disaster “.
Please define it Mary?”
Mary: Disaster is a serious disruption of the functioning of a
community or a society involving widespread human, economic
or environmental losses and impacts, which exceeds the ability
of the affected community or society to cope using its own
resources (RA 10121)
“Thank you Mary!”
There are terms associated with disaster. Please give one,
Shyna?”
Shyna: Capacity! Maam. It is the combination of all the strengths,
attributes and resources available within a community, society or
organization that can be used to achieve agreed goals (RA
10121).
Thank you Shyna! Another one?” Yes, Andrew?” Andrew: Disaster Preparedness Ma’am!
It is a state in which individuals and groups of a community
have developed plans, allocated resources and established
procedures for an efficient and effective implementation of the
plans for the purpose of saving lives and preventing further
damage to property in the event of a disaster.
“Very Good Andrew!
“Now, I want to hear Andrea on the definition of Disaster
Risk Reduction”
Andrea: It is the concept and practice of reducing disaster risks
through systematic efforts to analyze and reduce the causal
factors of disasters. Reducing exposure to hazards, lessening
vulnerability of people and property, wise management of land
and the environment, and improving preparedness for adverse
events are all examples of disaster risk reduction. (National
“Nice one Andrea! Meteorological and Hydrological Services, 2010)
“How about Disaster Risk, Rizza?”
Rizza: Disaster Risk is the function of hazard, vulnerability and
capacity.
It is the potential disaster losses, in lives, health status,
livelihoods, assets and services, which could occur to a particular
community or a society over some specified future time period
“Thank you, Rizza!”
How about Exposure, Sam?”
Sam: Exposure is the degree to which the elements at risk are
likely to experience hazard events of different magnitudes (RA
“Very good Sam!”
And the last one is Vulnerability. Who can define what is 10121)
Vulnerability?” Yes, Anthony?”
Anthony: Vulnerability is the characteristics and circumstances of
a community, system or asset that make it susceptible to the
damaging effects of a hazard.
“Thank you, Anthony!”
We have done defining the terms associated with disaster.
I have here an image of Hazard, Vulnerability and
Disaster. What are your observation on the image?
“Yes, Irene?”
Irene: As I observe, on top of the hillside, there is a big rock that
is likely to fall and by the time it happens, it will hit to the person
below. So it means, the big rock is the hazard and the person is
vulnerable of the rock. The other image, the big rock fell on to
the person that cause damage and injury then that is what we
“Exactly! Thank you Irene! call disaster.
We have here symbol
DR= H+E+V
C
By just looking at the relationship between disaster risk
and the factors hazard, exposure, vulnerability and
capacity, what have you observe? What can you say about
it? Yes, Octavio?”
Octavio: As I observed, the symbols become smaller or reduced.
This means that we can reduce the risk brought about by any
disaster by reducing the hazard, exposure and vulnerability of
Thank you, Octavio! the people or properties while increasing the capacity of the
community.
D. Activity
Okey! Group yourselves into 3.
I will give photo each group. Then you will analyze and
identify all the hazards that you can find then give your
reasons why they are vulnerable to such conditions.
You will discuss in the group and present it to the class.

After 10 minutes: “Are you ready?” All Students: “Yes Ma’am!”
(the students will report by group in front of the class)
Okey, Group 1 will report first. Let’s give them a round
clap!
Group 1: The hazards that may occur in this picture are Flood,
Typhoon and Accidents. They are vulnerable to typhoon and
flood because their houses are very near to the river. They are
also vulnerable to accidents because they live under the bridge
especially that bridge is the passageway of car trucks.
Very Good group 1! Now. Let’s proceed to Group 2!
Let’s give them a Durian Clap!
Group 2: The hazards that may occur in this picture are car
accidents and injuries to passersby. Passersby and cars are
vulnerable on this broken roads because they don’t have a
choice but to pass by on that area especially that is a national
road.
Very Good Group 2. Now, let’s procedd to Group 3! Let’s
give them a body clap!
Group 3: The hazard that may occur on this area is landslide.
Houses and buildings in that area are vulnerable to landslide
because of slope area. It is very possible to occur landslide
especially on rainy days.
Very Good Group 3! Let’s clap our hands for your
participation and cooperation in each group.
IV. Evaluation
Get ¼ sheet of paper and answer the following.
Identification: Answer:
____1. It is the degree to which the elements at risk are 1. Exposure
like to experience hazards events of different magnitudes. 2. Disaster
____2. It is a serious disruption of the functioning of the 3. Capacity
community or a society involving widespread human, 4. Disaster Preparedness
material, economic or environmental losses and impacts. 5. Vulnerability
____3. It can be describe as the resources available to
individuals, households and communities to cope with a
threat.
____4. A state in which individuals or groups developed
plans, allocate resources and established procedures for an
efficient and effective implementation of the plans.
____5. It is the characteristics and circumstances of a
community, system or asset that make it susceptible to the
damaging effects of a hazard.
IV. Assignment
Direction: Proposed an action that would eliminate or
reduce vulnerability and disaster in this situation.
