11. Rationale of the Course
This course introduces the core principles and practices in power system protection and
circuit breaking mechanisms. It covers the operation, selection, and coordination of
protective relays and breakers, crucial for maintaining power system stability, safety, and
reliability. The course also explores the behavior of high-voltage and low-voltage AC circuit
breakers, arc extinction techniques, and advanced protection schemes for major power
system components.
12. Course Objectives
a) To understand the function and operation of HV and LV AC circuit breakers.
b) To study arc extinction methods and breaker ratings in different applications.
c) To explore the function, construction, and operating principles of protective relays.
d) To apply protection schemes to transformers, motors, generators, transmission lines,
and busbars.
e) To develop skills in relay coordination and protection system design.
13. Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
CLO Code Course Learning Outcome
CLO1 Describe the function and operation of HV
and LV AC circuit breakers.
