Edge Computing?
“Edge Computing is an innovative
computing approach that brings
computation and data storage
physically closer to where data is
generated—like sensors, mobile
phones, or local servers—rather than
relying entirely on centralized cloud
data centers”
Edge Computing is a distributed computing paradigm.
It brings computation and data storage closer to the sources of data.
Designed to improve response times and save bandwidth.
Ideal for real-time applications like IoT, autonomous systems, and smart devices.
Why Edge Computing?
Reduced Latency:
Edge computing brings data processing closer to the source of data, reducing the
time it takes for the data to be transmitted to a central location and back. This
reduces latency and improves application performance, making it particularly
beneficial for real-time applications like video streaming, autonomous vehicles, and
industrial control systems.
Reduced Bandwidth Costs:
Edge computing can help reduce bandwidth costs by processing data locally and
only transmitting the data that is needed to a central location. This can reduce the
amount of data that needs to be transmitted over the network, saving on bandwidth
costs and reducing network congestion.
Better Performance:
Edge computing can improve application performance by processing data locally,
reducing the amount of data that needs to be transmitted to a central location, and
enabling faster response times.
Increased Scalability:
Edge computing can enable applications to scale more easily by distributing
computing power across multiple nodes. This can improve the performance and
reliability of applications that need to scale rapidly in response to changing
demand.
Enhanced Privacy and Security:
Edge computing can improve privacy and security by keeping data closer to its
source and reducing the need for data to be transmitted to a central location. This
can reduce the risk of data breaches and improve compliance with data protection
regulations.
Architectural Diagram
Data is generated by device at the edge of
network such as sensor,cameras and
other IoT device.
Data collected by gateways that are
located closer to the device reducing
latency and network traffic.
The edge server process and analyze the
data in real time using algorithm and
machine learning model to derive insight
and action.
The result of the analysis are then sent to
the cloud for further processing or
storage or directly to the user for
immediate action.
Component of Edge Computing
“it primarily includes Edge Device,Edge
Gateway,,Cloud,NetworkLayer,Middleware,Security Layer”
Edge Devices (Data Generation Layer):
Devices that generate data at the source.
Examples: IoT sensors, smart cameras, smartphones, wearables, industrial
machines.
Edge Nodes / Edge Gateways (Processing Layer):
Local computing units located near the data source.
Examples: Local servers, smart routers, embedded edge servers.
Network Layer (Communication Layer)
The connection layer that links devices, edge nodes, and the cloud.
Examples: 4G/5G, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, LPWAN.
Cloud:
Centralized infrastructure for deep processing, training AI models, and long-
term storage.
Middleware:
Software layer that manages applications and data across edge devices and
nodes.
Azure IoT Edge, AWS Greengrass, Google Edge TPU.
Security layer:
Tools and protocols that protect edge networks and data.
Firewalls, encryption, access controls, anomaly detection.
How Edge Computing works?
Data is generated at the data source
such as sensor,camera,industrial IoT
etc.
at Edge node data is being processed
and an immediate action is taken.
Result is sent to cloud for future use .
Advantages over Cloud Computing
Application of Edge Computing
smart city smart agriculture healthcare
Autonomous Vehicle Remote Monitoring Smart Manufacturing
Use Case->Smart Agriculture:
“Edge computing is deployed in smart
agriculture to process data locally at the
source (like in fields, greenhouses, or on
agricultural equipment) rather than sending all
data to centralized cloud servers. This
approach enables real-time decision-making,
reduces latency, and minimizes bandwidth
usage — all crucial for efficient, timely
agricultural operations”
Smart sensor and IoT device at the field:
Sensors are installed in the field to monitor:
Soil moisture, pH, and nutrient levels
Temperature and humidity
Light intensity
Livestock health and movement
These sensors are often connected to edge devices
(like Raspberry Pi, NVIDIA Jetson, or Arduino
boards) that collect and process the data locally.
Edge Gateways at the Field Level:
“Edge gateways or micro data centers
are deployed near farmlands or within
agricultural machinery”
These devices:
Preprocess sensor data
Run AI/ML models (e.g., crop disease
detection)
Trigger automated actions (like activating
irrigation systems or sending alerts)
Local Decision-Making:
Based on processed data, edge
systems can:
Automatically adjust irrigation based
on soil moisture
Identify early signs of pest infestation
Predict weather-based actions (like
delaying pesticide spraying)
Edge-to-Cloud Integration:
While edge handles real-time
actions, processed or summarized
data is sent to the cloud for:
Long-term storage
Historical analysis
Dashboard visualization and
insights
