Mini Project 1

STB 36703 MECHATRONICS DESIGN PROJECTS

STB 46703 ELECTRIC VEHICLE SYSTEM

Mini Project: Conversion of an Internal Combustion Engine Vehicle to

Electric Vehicle

Objective:

Design a conversion plan for transforming a typical internal combustion engine vehicle into a
fully electric vehicle, focusing on the replacement and integration of key components such as
the powertrain and battery system.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Understand the Impact of Engineering Solutions in a Societal Context and

Demonstrate Knowledge of Sustainable Development:
o Analyze how the electric vehicle conversion contributes to environmental
sustainability, including reduced carbon emissions and decreased reliance on
fossil fuels.
o Discuss the societal implications of widespread adoption of electric vehicles,
considering factors such as changes in energy consumption patterns, urban air
quality improvement, and noise pollution reduction.
2. Demonstrate an Awareness and Understanding of Management, Business
Practices, and Technopreneurial Competencies:
o Develop a project management plan outlining the conversion process,
including timelines, resource allocation, and risk management.
o Conduct a market analysis to identify potential business opportunities or
niches for electric vehicle conversions.
o Propose a business model for a startup or an existing business to enter into the
electric vehicle conversion market, detailing the strategic approach, potential
revenue streams, and competitive advantage.
3. Demonstrate Understanding of Societal, Health, Safety, Legal, and Cultural
Issues and the Consequent Responsibilities and Norms of Engineering
Technology Practice:
o Evaluate the health and safety aspects associated with electric vehicle
conversions, including the handling and disposal of battery systems.
o Discuss the legal and regulatory considerations that must be addressed when
converting and operating electric vehicles.
o Explore the cultural impacts and public perceptions of shifting from internal
combustion engines to electric vehicles, and how these perceptions might
affect adoption rates.

Instructions:
1. Vehicle Selection:
o Select a typical internal combustion engine vehicle model. Provide
specifications such as vehicle weight, engine type, fuel tank capacity, and
current fuel efficiency.
2. Component Analysis and Selection:
o Electric Motor: Choose an appropriate electric motor to replace the internal
combustion engine. Consider factors like motor type (e.g., AC induction
motor, BLDC motor), power output, and efficiency.
o Battery Pack: Design a battery pack that will provide adequate energy
storage to meet or exceed the original vehicle's range. Specify the type of
batteries (e.g., Li-ion, Li-S), capacity (kWh), and layout.
o Power Electronics: Include necessary power electronics like inverters and
controllers to manage the power flow between the battery pack and the electric
motor.
o Cooling System: Design a cooling system to maintain optimal temperatures
for the motor and battery system.
o Transmission: Decide whether to retain the existing transmission system or to
implement a new configuration more suitable for an electric drivetrain.
3. Design Integration:
o Create a detailed plan on how these components will be integrated into the
existing vehicle chassis. Consider aspects such as component placement for
optimal weight distribution, space constraints, and modifications needed for
mounting new components.
4. Simulation and Analysis:
o Use MATLAB Simscape or a similar simulation tool to model the converted
vehicle. Simulate vehicle performance parameters such as acceleration, top
speed, and range.
o Compare these parameters with the original ICE vehicle to evaluate the
benefits of conversion.
5. Economic, Environmental, and Societal Analysis:
o Provide a preliminary cost estimate for the conversion, including the cost of
components and labor.
o Discuss the environmental benefits of converting to an electric vehicle, such as
reductions in carbon emissions and fuel consumption.
o Evaluate the societal impacts, including health and safety considerations and
legal compliances.
6. Business and Technopreneurial Analysis:
o Analyze the potential market and business opportunities for electric vehicle
conversions.
o Develop a concise business plan for launching a service or product based on
your project.
7. Report:
o Compile a comprehensive report that includes:
▪ A description of the selected vehicle and its original specifications.
▪ Detailed specifications and justifications for each component selected.
▪ Diagrams and layout plans showing the integration of new
components.
▪ Results from the simulation showing performance comparisons.
▪ Economic, environmental, societal, and business impact analysis.
Submission Guidelines:

• Submit all simulation files and scripts used for the vehicle modeling.
• Attach a PDF report that includes all required analysis, diagrams, component
specifications, and business plan
