Bacteria That Cause Arthritis
Arthritis caused by bacteria is a condition where bacteria infect the joints
or trigger an immune response leading to joint inflammation. It can be of
two main types:
1. Septic Arthritis: Direct infection of a joint by bacteria.
2. Reactive Arthritis: Inflammation in the joints after a bacterial
infection elsewhere in the body (like the stomach or urinary system).
How Do Bacteria Cause Arthritis?
1. Septic Arthritis
Bacteria enter the joint through:
Bloodstream (hematogenous spread).
A wound or surgery near the joint.
Spread from nearby infections like cellulitis (skin infection).
These bacteria multiply in the joint, causing inflammation and
destruction of joint tissues.
2. Reactive Arthritis
Bacteria cause an infection in another part of the body (e.g., the
stomach or urinary system).
The immune system overreacts and mistakenly attacks the joints,
leading to inflammation.
Bacteria That Cause Reactive Arthritis
1. Chlamydia trachomatis
Medical Term Meaning: A bacteria causing sexually transmitted infections
(STI).
How It Causes Reactive Arthritis:
Infection occurs in the genital tract (urinary or reproductive organs).
Symptoms include painful urination, genital discharge, or no
symptoms at all.
The immune system reacts to the infection and mistakenly inflames
the joints.
2. Salmonella species
Medical Term Meaning: A group of bacteria causing food poisoning from
contaminated food or water.
How It Causes Reactive Arthritis:
Infection occurs in the gastrointestinal tract (stomach and intestines).
Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever.
After the stomach infection clears, joint inflammation can develop.
3. Shigella species
Medical Term Meaning: A bacteria causing dysentery (severe diarrhea with
blood and mucus).
How It Causes Reactive Arthritis:
Infection occurs in the digestive tract, causing severe diarrhea and
abdominal pain.
Reactive arthritis develops after the infection resolves, particularly in
people with the HLA-B27 gene.
4. Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis
Medical Term Meaning: Bacteria that infect the intestines and cause
gastroenteritis (stomach infection).
How It Causes Reactive Arthritis:
Infection occurs through contaminated food, water, or pork products.
Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain (often mimicking
appendicitis).
Joint pain and swelling develop after the infection is gone.
5. Campylobacter jejuni
Medical Term Meaning: A bacteria causing foodborne illness, often from
undercooked poultry or unpasteurized milk.
How It Causes Reactive Arthritis:
Causes gastroenteritis with symptoms like diarrhea (sometimes bloody),
abdominal cramps, and fever.
Reactive arthritis develops in some individuals days or weeks after the
stomach infection resolves.
