head of water should represent 1 volt in analog. Work out the scale factor for resistance
and discharge. What capacitance should require for each block.
4. An R.C network analog has to be constructed to simulate a confined aquifer of 40 km × 60
km with an average thickness of 30 m, permeability of 25 m/day, and storage coefficient
4 × 10-4 . The maximum head is 40 m. The model can be represented by 40 × 60 nodes.
Resistor of 3000 Ω and capacitors of 0.01 μF are available; model voltage =8 V. Work out
the scale factors. If a calibrating resistor of 2500 Ω is used for simulating pumping rate,
determine the current pulse and excitation voltage to simulate a pumping rate 1000 m3/day
at a particular node.
5. Briefly describe the approach and objective of groundwater modelling
6. What is conceptual Model
7. Classify different types of models and model solution
8. Write short notes on
a) Model calibration
b) Sensitivity Analysis
c) RC Network Analog
9. (a) Briefly describe the term "response of an unconfined aquifer to pumping."
(b) A test was conducted with an unconfined aquifer near Burdwan, Damodar River. The
well was pumped at constant rate of 2040 m3/day. The drawdown measured in an
observation well 10 m away are listed in below table. Aquifer thickness is 14 m.

using Neuman’s straight-line method.

Design of Water Resources System
(2nd semester Day & 4th Semester Evening)
1. A small municipal wellfield is to be developed in an unconfined sand aquifer with a
hydraulic conductivity of 50 m/d, saturated thickness of 30 m, and specific yield of 0.2. A
service demand of 81.0 L/s is required from the wellfield, and the diameter of each well is
to be 60 cm. If the drawdown in the aquifer is not to exceed 3 m when the wellfield is
operational, develop a proposed layout for the wells. There are no nearby surface-water
bodies.
2. An urban housing is to be developed in an unconfined sand aquifer with a transmissivity
1495 m2/day, saturated thickness of 30 m, and specific yield of 0.2. A service demand of
5000 people is required from the wellfield, and the diameter of each well is to be 20 cm. If
the drawdown in the aquifer is not to exceed 3.5 m when the wellfield is operational,
develop a proposed layout for the wells. There are no nearby surface-water bodies.
3. A radial water collector is to be designed for extraction of 15000 m3/day from the
groundwater stored in riverbed which has an aquifer extending up to 13 m below the bed
with width limited to actual riverbed itself, which is 600 m wide. Along duration pump test
indicates a transmissibility of 3.6 ×106 lpd/m for the saturated thickness of 12 m when the
water table is 1 m below the riverbed and storage coefficient of 33 % for the aquifer as
confirmed by laboratory tests. The water table goes down by 4.2 m over a period of 250
days during which period the summer rain fall amounts tom40 cm.
4. A radial water collector is to be designed for extraction of 22700 m3/day from the
groundwater stored in riverbed which has an aquifer extending up to 12 m below the bed

water table is 1 m below the riverbed and storage coefficient of 33 % for the aquifer as
confirmed by laboratory tests. The water table goes down by 4.2 m over a period of 250
days during which period the summer rain fall amounts tom 60 cm.

groundwater stored in riverbed which has an aquifer extending up to 12 m below the bed
with width limited to actual riverbed itself, which is 600 m wide. Along duration pump test
